fair.”

“She was kind.”

I frowned.

“She was accurate.”

Michael paused.

“Yes.”

“That isn’t kindness.”

“I know.”

“What did Rachel think?”

“She said I looked like someone attending my own autopsy.”

I laughed.

“That sounds unpleasant.”

“Useful.”

He became quiet.

Then:

“I’m glad she told it.”

“Why?”

“Because for years I wanted control over how people understood what happened.”

“That tracks.”

“I don’t anymore.”

I believed him.

At least now.

“Good.”

“Did you help?”

“Yes.”

“Did you make me less terrible?”

“No.”

He laughed.

“Fair.”

“I made you more specific.”

“That might be worse.”

“It usually is.”

Then Michael asked:

“Do you think you’ll ever tell the story publicly?”

I looked toward the frame.

“I don’t know.”

“What would you call it?”

I smiled.

“Probably something less dramatic than your life deserves.”

He laughed.

We spoke for a few minutes.

Then ended.

I stayed in the office after dark.

Maya’s question remained.

What part of the story was mine to keep?

The answer was not all of it.

Not Michael’s private remorse.

Not Rachel’s choices.

Not Maya’s pain.

Not Claire’s childhood.

Not Mom’s letters beyond what I chose to share.

My part was narrower.

I saw a photograph.

I learned my husband had another life.

I gathered facts.

I left.

I rebuilt.

Then life became much larger than the betrayal.

That was mine.

I stood and turned off the office lights.

The silver frame caught the last reflection from the city.

For years, that object had symbolized discovery.

Now it was simply a frame.

Maybe healing was partly that.

The moment when symbols became objects again.

I took my coat.

Went home.

And did not check whether anything was waiting to be discovered.

<a
