life around the convenience of people waiting for my assets.

I handed the copies to Daniel’s secure upload folder.

Then I looked at Liam.

“You asked what happens to you.”

He nodded.

“I don’t know.”

His face tightened.

“But I know what happens to me.”

“What?”

“I go home.”

“To Chicago?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Tomorrow.”

He looked surprised.

“The trip?”

“The trip stopped being a vacation days ago.”

“What are you going to do?”

I looked at the senior-living brochure.

Then the forged acknowledgment.

Then the police report number.

“I’m going to walk through every room in my house and find out what else was prepared for a life I never agreed to live.”

That evening I booked the first flight home.

Evelyn booked the seat beside me.

Liam said he would follow with the children after speaking to his attorney.

I did not tell him what to do.

Before bed, Daniel called with one final update.

Investigators had begun reviewing the USB drives from the gray box.

One contained folders organized by month.

Another contained financial records.

The third contained scanned signatures.

Including mine.

Including Liam’s.

Including Susan’s.

And, according to the preliminary inventory, a folder titled TEMPLATES.

Inside it were signature images and editable versions of several disputed documents.

The computer metadata would still need analysis.

No final attribution yet.

But someone had not merely forged a signature once.

Someone had built a system for doing it repeatedly.

And the first file in that template folder had been created in July.

Before Chloe ever asked me for help.

Before the home equity line.

Before guardianship.

Before Christmas.

Before anyone could claim desperation forced a last-minute mistake.

Whatever had happened to my family had started much earlier.

And now, finally, there was a digital trail leading back to the beginning.
