Most assets passed to me. A smaller investment account had listed Graham as contingent beneficiary because Thomas had opened it years earlier when our son was young.

When Thomas died, Graham had voluntarily signed the immediately.”

“Are you relieved?”

“Yes.”

He sounded exhausted rather than relieved.

“How did the conversation with Paige go?”

“Badly.”

I waited.

“She says she contacted the lawyer because she’s afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Being poor.”

That answer surprised me.

“They’re not poor,” I said before remembering I was speaking about Graham’s household.

“I know.”

“She knows too.”

“She grew up differently than I did.”

I knew only fragments about Paige’s childhood. Her father left when she was nine. Her mother worked unpredictable hours. They moved often. says when she found out you had millions, all she could think was that we’d finally never have to worry again.”

I stared at the dark kitchen window.

“And when I did not offer it?”

“She felt shut out.”

“That doesn’t make it hers.”

“I told her that.”

“How did she respond?”

“She said I always side with you.”

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“That is new.”

“I said the same thing.”

Despite myself, I smiled.

Then he grew serious.

“She admitted she knew there was probably nothing else from Dad.”

“Probably?”

“She remembered the papers.”

“Then why involve an attorney?”

“She wanted leverage.”

The word landed heavily.

“Against me?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“To make you disclose the trusts.”

I stood.

“Why?”

“She says she wants proof the children are protected.”

“They are.”

“I told her.”

“She doesn’t trust my word.”

“No.”

“Or kitchen.”

“Famous?”

“Dad keeps talking about it.”

“Should I be concerned?”

“No. He says Grandpa hated answer immediately.

“That’s good, isn’t it?” he asked.

“It could be.”

“You don’t believe her.”

“I believe actions should see a counselor.”

That surprised me.

“What did she say?”

“She said yes.”

“Then I hope it helps.”

He looked toward the yard where Owen and Chloe were arguing over a rake.

“So do I.”

A week passed quietly.

Then another.

I began volunteering twice a week at the library near Ruth’s house.

I joined a gardening group.

I learned that retirement, when no one else designed it, contained far more mornings than I had expected.

One Tuesday afternoon, Martin called.

“Do you remember Paige’s attorney?”

“I thought she fired him.”

“She did.”

“Then why are you finances?”

“She shouldn’t.”

My thoughts moved quickly.

The cottage.

The rental property.

The trusts.

Thomas’s estate.

None of those records had ever been kept in Graham’s house.

Then I remembered something.

During the first months after the lottery, before the cottage was
