lot.”

“Yes.”

“So did Uncle Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“Leonard.”

“Yes.”

“Paige.”

“Yes.”

“You.”

“Yes.”

He smiled slightly.

“You didn’t even argue.”

“I’m maturing.”

“And me.”

“Especially you.”

He laughed.

Then his face grew serious.

“I’m glad Dad wrote that letter.”

“So am I.”

“Even knowing he did the same thing?”

“Especially knowing.”

“Why?”

“Because it means warnings can come from mistakes instead of superiority.”

Graham nodded.

“I started counseling by myself.”

I looked at him.

“I thought you and Paige were going together.”

“We are.”

“And alone?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He took a breath.

“I don’t know who I am if I’m not fixing something.”

That was one of the most honest things my son had ever said.

“What does the therapist say?”

“That I should stop asking her what the answer is.”

I laughed until tears came.

Graham grinned.

“She also says I use competence to avoid vulnerability.”

“That sounds expensive.”

“It is.”

“Worth it?”

“So far.”

We drove on.

Then he said, “Paige wants to come to the cabin someday.”

I became quiet.

“She knows Clara lives there?”

“Yes.”

“Does she want to apologize?”

“Yes.”

“To Clara?”

“And you.”

“She has apologized to me.”

“She says not enough.”

“That may be true.”

“Is that a no?”

“No.”

He glanced over.

“No meaning no or no meaning—”

“I see why your therapist charges so much.”

He laughed again.

“Ask me another time.”

“Okay.”

That evening, I returned to the cottage.

My cottage.

Not Thomas’s plan.

Not Graham’s solution.

Not Paige’s problem.

Mine.

I made tea and opened the ledger one last time.

On the final page, beneath the total reserve, Thomas had written one sentence I had overlooked.

If there is money left when you finally feel free, use it to help someone else feel free too.

I stared at the words.

Beautiful.

Dangerous.

Exactly like Thomas.

I closed the ledger.

Then I wrote beneath his sentence.

Only if they ask.

I smiled.

The phone rang.

Paige.

I almost let it go to voicemail.

Then answered.

“Hello?”

“Evelyn.”

“Yes?”

“I need to tell you something before Graham does.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“I’m leaving.”

I stood.

“Leaving what?”

“Our house.”

I closed my eyes.

“You and Graham?”

“For a while.”

“What happened?”

“We had counseling today.”

“And?”

“He asked me what I wanted.”

The irony was almost too perfect.

“What did you say?”

“I didn’t know.”

“That happens.”

“He said we could sit with that.”

“That sounds like progress.”

“It terrified me.”

I heard her crying.

“I’ve spent years building a life around what I thought everyone else needed from me.”

I said nothing.

Paige continued.

“And when Graham started changing, I got angry because he stopped being predictable.”

“Where are you going?”

“My sister’s.”

“Are the children staying with Graham?”

“For now.”

“Was that agreed?”

“Yes.”

“Do they know?”

“We’re telling them tonight.”

I sat down.

“What do you need from me?”

The question surprised both of us.

Paige cried harder.

“Nothing.”

“That is allowed.”

“I just didn’t want you hearing it and thinking this was because of the money.”

“I wouldn’t assume that.”

“You used to.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then she said, “Maybe we’re all getting better.”

“Perhaps.”

“Evelyn?”

“Yes?”

“Can I call you again?”

I looked around the yellow kitchen.

At Thomas’s photograph.

At the ledger.

At my own handwritten correction beneath his final instruction.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Whenever you actually want to talk.”

She laughed through tears.

“That sounds fair.”

After we ended the call, I remained at the table.

For months, I had believed the lottery had exposed who everyone truly was.

Now I understood something larger.

Money did not reveal one permanent truth.

Pressure revealed habits.

Fear revealed habits.

Loss revealed habits.

But habits were not destiny.

Graham could learn to ask.

Paige could learn to stop controlling uncertainty.

Melissa and I could repair what pride had broken.

Leonard could release responsibilities that no longer belonged to him.

And I could stop measuring love by how much of myself I surrendered.

The next morning, Martin called.

I expected another document.

Another account.

Another hidden Thomas arrangement.

Instead, he said, “I have good news.”

“That feels suspicious.”

“The Hart-Mercer building received an offer.”

“To buy?”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t list it.”

“The neighboring medical group approached the property manager.”

“How much?”

He told me.

Two point four million dollars.

Far above the assessed value.

I stared at the wall.

“Do I have to decide now?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“Do you want my advice?”

I smiled.

“Not yet.”

Martin laughed.

“You really are becoming difficult.”

“I had an excellent teacher.”

After we hung up, I looked out at the frost-covered garden.

A year earlier, I would have immediately called Graham.

Thomas.

Leonard.

Someone who seemed more certain.

Now I poured coffee.

Sat down.

And allowed the decision to remain mine.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: A Two-Million-Dollar Offer Forced Me to Decide Whether Keeping Thomas’s
