everyone.”

She laughed.

Then asked, “Will I be rich?”

“That is not something you should plan your life around.”

“So maybe.”

“You have education money set aside.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Your father told you?”

“No. Owen.”

I sighed.

Older siblings.

“Does that mean I don’t have to work?”

“No.”

“Rude.”

“You can choose many kinds of work.”

“What if I become an artist?”

“Then become one.”

“What if I’m bad?”

“Then perhaps become a different kind of artist.”

She laughed.

“What if I spend all the trust money?”

“The structure makes that difficult.”

“So you don’t trust me.”

“I don’t trust anyone at eleven with large amounts of money.”

“Fair.”

She thought.

“Did Grandpa?”

“What?”

“Trust people with money?”

I laughed.

“Your grandfather trusted people in very specific and complicated ways.”

“That means no.”

“Sometimes.”

She leaned back.

“Dad says Grandpa hid things because he was scared.”

“That is partly true.”

“Are you scared?”

“Sometimes.”

“Of what?”

I looked toward the garden.

“Becoming someone who uses money to keep people close.”

She frowned.

“Can money do that?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“By making people feel they cannot disagree with you.”

She considered that.

“Can I disagree with you?”

“Frequently.”

“I don’t like your lemon cookies.”

I stared at her.

“That is not permitted.”

She grinned.

“I knew it.”

That conversation stayed with me.

The greatest risk of wealth was not greed.

At least not for me.

It was leverage.

The ability to make every generous offer difficult to refuse.

That required more restraint than I had expected.

At the next Common Ground meeting, a grant proposal tested exactly that.

A community center wanted a large donation.

Two hundred thousand dollars.

New roof.

Expanded classrooms.

Good project.

Strong leadership.

Clear need.

I liked it immediately.

Too immediately.

Paul noticed.

“You’re leaning.”

“I am sitting.”

“You’re leaning emotionally.”

“Stop inventing phrases.”

Dana presented the financial review.

The center had other funding sources.

A full two hundred thousand from us would cover the gap.

Melissa asked whether the center had considered scaling.

The director said yes, but preferred completing the entire project at once.

I wanted to approve it.

We could afford it.

Then Paul asked, “What happens to the fund if we start making two-hundred-thousand-dollar grants?”

Good question.

Dana said we could make several but not many.

Melissa asked whether one large project deserved more than forty smaller emergencies.

No clear answer.

I realized everyone was looking at me.

Old Evelyn would have decided.

New Evelyn disliked that they were looking.

“This is why there’s a board.”

Paul smiled.

“Correct.”

We voted.

I voted yes.

Paul no.

Dana no.

Melissa yes.

Tie.

Under the bylaws, tie meant no approval unless revised.

For one second, I was angry.

Then relieved.

The center returned with a smaller request.

One hundred ten thousand for the urgent roof phase.

Other donors funded classrooms later.

We approved unanimously.

Not because the first proposal was wrong.

Because disagreement improved it.

Driving home, I thought about Chloe.

About Paige.

About myself.

Our family used to treat disagreement as danger.

Thomas hid things to avoid it.

I overhelped to prevent it.

Graham organized people around it.

Paige controlled information because she feared it.

Now disagreement had become ordinary.

Sometimes useful.

Sometimes irritating.

Almost always survivable.

That evening, Graham sent a family group message.

Dinner Sunday?

Melissa replied:

I’m out of state.

Paige:

Yes.

Owen:

depends food

Chloe:

NOT lemon cookies

I wrote:

Invitation withdrawn.

Ruth, somehow included in the group, replied:

Finally someone said it.

I stared at my phone.

Then laughed until I had tears in my eyes.

Nothing was solved forever.

That was becoming one of my favorite truths.

Click here to continue reading: PART 27: A Request From Leonard’s Daughter Made Me Revisit
