not need to earn my approval.

Why was I saving that?

I called him.

“Mom?”

“I wrote you a letter.”

“That sounds dangerous.”

“I’m reading it now.”

“What?”

“Come over tonight.”

“Should I be worried?”

“No.”

“Then yes.”

I called Paige.

Then Melissa.

Owen and Chloe would be there with their parents.

That evening, everyone crowded into my cottage.

Ruth invited herself.

Fresh bread exemption.

I placed the letters on the table.

“What is this?” Paige asked.

“Something stupid.”

Owen looked interested.

“Money?”

“No.”

“Then less interested.”

I laughed.

“These were letters for after I die.”

Every face changed.

“I’m fine.”

Graham exhaled.

“Mom.”

“I’m fine.”

Chloe looked alarmed.

“Are you dying?”

“Eventually.”

“Grandma.”

“Not soon, I hope.”

I passed the envelopes out.

“I realized I was saving things I can tell you now.”

Nobody opened theirs immediately.

Then Melissa did.

That gave everyone permission.

The room became quiet.

My letters were not dramatic.

To Graham, I wrote that being my son had never required being my caretaker.

To Paige, I wrote that one of the strangest gifts of my life came from her two-dollar joke ticket, but the better gift was the relationship we rebuilt after.

She cried.

To Owen, I wrote that intelligence mattered less than curiosity, and curiosity mattered less than kindness when people disagreed with him.

He rolled his eyes.

Then wiped them.

To Chloe, I wrote that money could purchase lessons, supplies and opportunities but could not choose what kind of artist she became.

She said, “I’m still not sure I want to be an artist.”

“Exactly.”

To Melissa, I wrote that I regretted the years we lost and did not expect her to repay reconciliation with closeness she did not want.

She hugged me.

Ruth stared.

“Where’s mine?”

“I did not write you one.”

“Unacceptable.”

“You live ten minutes away.”

“That is discrimination.”

I handed her bread back to her.

Everyone laughed.

No secrets.

No perfect timing.

No death required.

Thomas had taught me many things after he died.

Perhaps the most useful was what not to postpone.

Click here to continue reading: PART 31: Paige’s Promotion Offered More Money and Status, but
