excellent advice.”

The journalist emailed questions.

Did I win eleven million dollars?

Did the prize finance property purchases?

Did family conflict influence incomplete.

A perfect headline trap.

Martin and I drafted responses.

Then I deleted most of them.

I did not need to litigate my family history publicly.

My you?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“I told him your money isn’t mine.”

“Excellent.”

“He said, Sloan.”

I stood.

“What do you need?”

She looked nervous.

“I’m not asking for money.”

Good.

“Then what?”

She held out an old photograph.

Thomas stood in it.

Younger.

Beside him, another man.

And a woman I recognized after several seconds.

Me.

The photograph had been taken more than thirty years earlier at a community picnic.

“What is this?”

Andrea swallowed.

“My father knew your husband.”

“That does not narrow much.”

“I know.”

Her hands trembled.

“He left something with me before he died.”

I stared.

Not another letter.

Please.

“What?”

“A box.”

Of course.

“What kind of box?”

“Documents.”

I closed my eyes.

Andrea continued quickly.

“I didn’t know what they meant until I saw the article.”

“What name was on them?”

She looked directly at me.

“Yours.”

My stomach tightened.

“Where did your father know Thomas from?”

“Not business.”

“Then?”

She hesitated.

“The veterans’ group.”

I frowned.

Thomas had never been in the military.

“I think you have the wrong Thomas Mercer.”

Andrea shook her head.

“No.”

“Thomas never served.”

“I know.”

“Then why was he in a veterans’ group?”

“He wasn’t.”

She swallowed.

“My father was.”

I waited.

“And?”

“He said Thomas helped him hide something after Vietnam.”

The sentence felt completely disconnected from every secret we had uncovered so far.

“What?”

Andrea handed me the photograph.

On the back, in Thomas’s handwriting, was one line.

If anything happens to Frank, this belongs to Evelyn.

Frank.

The name tugged at memory.

Then came back.

Frank Sloan.

Thomas’s oldest friend before Leonard.

A man who disappeared from our lives decades earlier.

Someone Thomas once told me had moved west.

Someone I had never thought to question.

Andrea looked toward the cottage door.

“There’s more.”

I almost laughed.

“There always is.”

But when she opened the box she had brought from her car, there were no bank statements.

No deeds.

No trusts.

On top sat a military identification tag.

Not Thomas’s.

Frank Sloan.

Beneath it lay dozens of letters tied with string.

Every one addressed to Thomas.

And beneath those letters was a sealed envelope with my name written across the front.

The postmark date was 1971.

Three years before I met my husband.

Click here to continue reading: PART 33: The Envelope Written Before Thomas Knew Me Forced
