continuity provision.

Samuel Mercer had signed it seventeen years earlier.

Daniel’s mother had witnessed it.

Thomas Keene had agreed to deliver it for independent filing.

It never reached the state registry.

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Thomas buried it.”

Richard’s face tightened.

“Or someone intercepted it.”

Daniel kept reading.

Anna believed Thomas had retained the amendment for years.

Then, shortly before her death, she confronted him.

Thomas admitted he had once possessed it.

He claimed Charles Voss took it under threat.

Anna did not believe the entire story.

Below that paragraph, she had written:

Thomas lies most convincingly when he is ashamed, not when he is afraid.

Daniel heard her voice in the observation.

Precise.

Unsentimental.

Human.

He turned the page.

Anna identified three people she considered essential to understanding the conspiracy.

Gregory Shaw: participant under coercion.

Thomas Keene: participant whose loyalty changed more than once.

Harold Pike: unreliable, frightened, but useful if his family is safe.

Harold looked down when Daniel read the line aloud.

Then Anna named Charles Voss.

Architect and enforcer of the legacy structure.

Not the principal.

Daniel’s eyes moved to the final name.

Adrian Rane.

Beneficiary.

Claire whispered, “Beneficiary of what?”

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“Control.”

Richard opened one of the sealed files.

Inside were ownership diagrams.

Holding companies linked to consulting vendors.

Northbridge connected to Savern.

Savern connected to Alder Ridge.

Alder Ridge connected through two layers of shell entities to a trust.

Rane Legacy Trust.

Daniel felt the room narrow.

“There.”

Richard traced the page.

“The money wasn’t being stolen randomly.”

Lena leaned closer.

“It was being routed back to the trust.”

Richard nodded.

“Potentially to fund legal claims, influence, buyouts, whatever they needed.”

Daniel picked up another page.

It contained a schedule of Bellmont voting thresholds.

Next to several dates were handwritten notes.

Daniel death.

Sophie minor.

Temporary control.

Daniel’s stomach turned.

Claire covered her mouth.

Harold looked away.

The plan had been written clinically.

As if Daniel’s death were not murder but a corporate event.

Lena took the page from him.

“We need police involved fully now.”

Richard nodded.

“Agreed.”

Daniel did not argue.

Then Claire found another document.

“Daniel.”

He looked over.

It was an insurance report from Anna’s crash.

A photograph showed the brake line.

Beside it was a handwritten notation.

Damage inconsistent with collision.

Daniel’s breath caught.

Lena leaned over the file.

“That’s my note.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You wrote this?”

“Yes.”

“Then how did Anna have it?”

Lena stared at the page.

“I don’t know.”

The note was dated two days after Anna’s death.

Anna could not have placed it here.

Everyone in the locker went silent.

Daniel looked at Harold.

He shook his head immediately.

“Not me.”

Claire looked frightened.

“So someone added things after she died.”

Daniel scanned the box again.

The disposable phone.

The files.

The photograph.

Which had been Anna’s?

Which had been added later?

And why?

Richard picked up the foil-wrapped phone.

“Don’t turn it on here.”

Daniel nodded.

Then Lena found the second envelope.

No name.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Typed.

If Daniel opens this case, the old agreement has already failed. Do not trust the evidence simply because it was hidden by Anna. Someone else has used this locker.

Daniel read the sentence twice.

Below it was a date.

Six months after Anna’s death.

Someone had accessed the supposedly secret locker after she died—

and left a warning for the day Daniel eventually opened it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Disposable Phone Contains a Call From After Anna’s Death, and the Voice on It Knows Exactly Who Altered Her Evidence

Daniel did not remember leaving Eleanor’s house.
