whispered, “Jesus.”

Thomas continued.

“There’s a maintenance cavity behind the memorial plaque.”

“You put a legal document in my father’s tomb?”

“I put it somewhere Voss would never search.”

Daniel almost laughed from disbelief.

“Voss visited my father’s funeral.”

“He never visits graves.”

“That was your security strategy?”

“It worked.”

“Until you told me.”

Thomas looked at him.

“It’s still there.”

“How do you know?”

“I checked after Anna died.”

“When?”

“Two days later.”

Daniel’s pulse sharpened.

“Why?”

“Because I thought she might have taken it.”

“She knew where it was?”

“No.”

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at Lena.

“We verify before sunset.”

Lena nodded.

Thomas spoke quickly.

“Daniel.”

He turned.

“There is something written on the amendment.”

“What?”

“Samuel added a handwritten instruction.”

Daniel waited.

Thomas’s expression became uneasy.

“I never understood it.”

“What does it say?”

“If the trust is activated, do not appoint the third protector from Bellmont.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

“He wrote a name underneath.”

“Whose?”

Thomas looked at him.

“Anna’s father.”

Daniel froze.

Anna’s father, Robert Hale, had died years before Daniel met her.

“That’s impossible.”

Thomas nodded.

“I know.”

“What exactly was written?”

“Robert Hale.”

Richard suddenly stopped breathing.

Daniel turned toward him.

“What?”

Richard’s face had gone pale.

“My father’s name was Robert Hale.”

Silence filled the room.

Daniel stared at Richard.

“You never told me your father had anything to do with Bellmont.”

“He didn’t.”

“Are you sure?”

Richard looked shaken.

“He died when I was twenty-two.”

“Occupation?”

“Corporate attorney.”

Daniel felt the room change.

Thomas was staring at Richard now too.

Richard whispered, “My father worked for a private firm before he died.”

“What firm?”

Richard closed his eyes as if searching memory he had not touched in years.

“Voss, Keene & Adler.”

Daniel stared.

Charles Voss.

Thomas Keene.

Richard’s father had worked at their firm.

Thomas looked physically ill.

“You’re Robert’s son.”

Richard turned to him.

“You knew my father?”

Thomas did not answer.

Daniel stepped between them.

“What did Robert Hale have to do with Samuel’s amendment?”

Thomas’s voice was barely audible.

“He drafted it.”

Richard sat down.

Daniel felt another certainty collapse.

His general counsel—the man he trusted most now—was the son of the attorney who secretly drafted the document everyone had been killing to control.

Then Daniel’s prepaid phone vibrated on the table.

Every person looked at it.

Daniel opened the message.

Now you understand why Richard was placed beside you.

He looked up.

Richard was staring at the screen too.

A second message appeared.

Ask him what his father left him.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: Richard Opens His Father’s Sealed Papers and Finds Proof
