Peter’s photograph.

“Peter.”

Daniel’s frustration sharpened.

“We’re back where we started.”

“No,” Charles said.

“You finally have the right question.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“Everyone says that right before giving me another mystery.”

Charles leaned forward.

“Stop asking who could authenticate the instruction.”

“Why?”

“Ask who knew Daniel’s car would leave his house that night.”

Daniel went still.

Anna took his car unexpectedly.

Gregory claimed she had a plan.

Margaret expected her at the office.

Peter knew the operation.

Michael knew the target vehicle.

Whitmore had been at Daniel’s house.

“Whitmore,” Daniel said.

Charles nodded.

Whitmore’s face hardened.

“I left before Anna took the keys.”

Daniel remembered.

That was true.

Whitmore had left earlier.

“Then you couldn’t know.”

“No.”

Charles smiled.

“But someone called him.”

Daniel looked at Whitmore.

“Who?”

Whitmore said nothing.

Charles answered.

“Anna.”

Daniel froze.

“No.”

Whitmore closed his eyes.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Why did Anna call you?”

Whitmore remained silent.

Daniel slammed his hand onto the table.

“WHY?”

Whitmore finally looked up.

“Because she knew I was moving money for Voss.”

Daniel stared.

“She confronted you.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Twenty minutes after I left your house.”

“What did she say?”

“That she knew about Northbridge’s predecessor accounts.”

“And?”

“She told me if anything happened to you, she would expose every transfer.”

Daniel’s chest tightened.

“Did she tell you she had my car?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

There it was.

Whitmore knew.

Before the crash.

Daniel’s voice became very quiet.

“What did you do with that information?”

Whitmore looked toward Charles.

Charles looked back.

Daniel understood.

“You called him.”

Whitmore whispered, “Yes.”

“And told him Anna had the target car.”

“Yes.”

Daniel turned to Charles.

“What did you do?”

Charles’s face had lost all amusement.

“I called Michael.”

Daniel felt the room narrow.

“And told him to stop?”

Charles hesitated.

That hesitation answered everything.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What did you tell your son?”

Charles finally said, “I told him the target had changed.”

Daniel stared.

Not stop.

Changed.

The phrase Margaret remembered.

Anna understood the price of changing the target.

Daniel’s hands began to shake.

“Did you know Anna was pregnant?”

Charles looked down.

“Yes.”

Daniel lunged.

Lena and Richard caught him before he reached Charles.

Daniel fought them for one second, then stopped himself.

Sophie.

He thought of Sophie.

He forced his hands open.

Charles remained seated.

Daniel’s voice broke with fury.

“You knew my wife was driving the car. You knew she was pregnant. And you let the operation continue.”

Charles looked at him.

“Yes.”

The room became silent.

Daniel had spent three years searching for an accident.

Then days searching for a murderer.

Now one of the men responsible had finally stopped hiding behind structure.

But Charles added one sentence before investigators removed him.

“I let it continue.”

Daniel stared.

“I did not cause the crash.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

Charles nodded toward Whitmore.

“Ask Marcus who was driving the SUV.”

Whitmore’s expression changed.

And Daniel knew there was still one person from that night they had not identified.

Click here to continue reading: PART 22: The Driver of the Black SUV Connects Anna’s Crash to the Bellmont Board and Forces Harold to Admit His Daughter Was Never the Only Hostage

The Mercer river house had belonged to Daniel’s grandfather before Bellmont Hospitality existed.
