the morning, federal investigators had taken control of the river house.

The hidden basement was photographed, cataloged, and sealed.

Michael Voss remained under guard at the stared.

Harold continued.

“Rachel said Michael pulled in front of Anna.”

“Why?”

“To force her toward the planned stopping point.”

“But the brakes were failing.”

“He didn’t know.”

Daniel saw it.

Anna descending.

Brakes damaged.

Michael SUV?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She realized Anna was driving.”

“How?”

“Anna called her.”

Daniel felt swerved.

Rachel swerved.

Anna entered the intersection.

The truck driver reacted too late.

The sedan struck the barrier and rolled.

Daniel shut his eyes.

“Did Rachel stop?”

“Yes.”

“Then why wasn’t she in the report?”

“Michael dragged her away.”

“Why?”

“He told her Anna was dead and police would blame her.”

Daniel felt fury.

“So he used her.”

“Yes.”

“Then you covered for her.”

Harold nodded.

“I changed the fleet record.”

“There.”

Daniel pointed at him.

“That is what you actually did.”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t order Anna’s death.”

“No.”

“You hid the SUV because your daughter drove it.”

“Yes.”

“And every time someone investigated, you helped bury that part.”

“Yes.”

Daniel turned away.

Another person choosing family over truth.

Another decision that made the next lie easier.

“Where did Rachel go?”

Harold answered.

“Margaret helped her disappear.”

Daniel almost laughed.

Of course.

“Did Margaret know Rachel witnessed the crash?”

“Yes.”

“Then Margaret knew Michael was there.”

“Yes.”

“She told me she saw him herself.”

“She did.”

“Why hide Rachel?”

“Because Rachel believed Michael would kill her.”

“Was she right?”

Harold looked at Daniel.

“Two weeks later, someone broke into her apartment and left a photograph of her sleeping.”

Daniel’s anger cooled into something phone.

“What?”

Margaret continued.

“Rachel thinks her father knew she was being used.”

Harold stood.

“No.”

Daniel gestured for him to remain quiet.

“Why would she think that?”

“Because Michael had Harold’s board credentials.”

Daniel looked at Harold.

Harold shook his head.

“I didn’t give them to him.”

Margaret said, “Rachel believed you did.”

Harold’s face “Put me through.”

The call took forty minutes to arrange.

Margaret used an intermediary.

Then another.

Finally a woman’s voice came through.

“Dad?”

Harold closed his eyes.

“Rachel.”

Neither spoke for several seconds.

Daniel looked away.

Harold whispered,
