showing how the lethal authorization was assembled.”

Peter looked at him.

“If he hasn’t destroyed it.”

Daniel’s phone rang.

Not the prepaid.

His restored personal line.

Unknown caller.

He answered.

A man spoke.

“Daniel Mercer.”

Daniel recognized the voice from archived recordings.

Adrian Rane.

“Where are you?”

Adrian ignored the question.

“I understand Charles is alive.”

“Yes.”

“And Marcus failed.”

“Also yes.”

A soft laugh.

“Your father would have enjoyed this.”

“Don’t talk about my father.”

“Samuel and I had more in common than either of us liked.”

Daniel looked at Lena.

She was already signaling technicians to trace the call.

“You were at Anna’s crash.”

Silence.

Then Adrian said, “Rachel finally spoke.”

“You took Anna’s bag.”

“Yes.”

“Do you still have it?”

“Yes.”

Daniel’s pulse sharpened.

“What do you want?”

“Something your father stole from mine.”

“The company?”

“No.”

“What?”

“The original Rane-Mercer partnership agreement.”

Daniel frowned.

“I’ve never seen it.”

“I know.”

“Where is it?”

“Robert Hale hid it.”

Daniel looked at Richard.

Richard shook his head.

Adrian continued.

“Your father spent his life pretending Bellmont began with Mercer virtue and Rane corruption.”

“I don’t care about the family mythology.”

“You should.”

“Why?”

“Because the agreement proves Samuel Mercer knew exactly what Victor Rane was doing.”

Daniel went silent.

“And?”

“And Elaine knew more than you’ve been told.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Where do you want to meet?”

Adrian laughed softly.

“No meeting yet.”

“You have evidence from my wife’s car.”

“Yes.”

“I want it.”

“And I want the agreement.”

“I don’t have it.”

“Then find it.”

The line began to click.

Daniel spoke quickly.

“Did you order my death?”

Silence.

“No.”

“Did you authorize the operation?”

“Yes.”

“Abduction?”

“Yes.”

“Did you approve escalation?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“Did you know escalation meant murder?”

Another pause.

“No.”

Daniel listened carefully.

Adrian added, “Not when I signed.”

The call ended.

Lena looked at the tracing technician.

He shook his head.

Too short.

Daniel turned toward Richard.

“The original partnership agreement.”

Richard was already thinking.

“If my father hid it, there may be a reference in the case.”

They returned to Robert Hale’s documents.

Nothing.

Then Daniel remembered the mausoleum.

Samuel’s handwritten note had instructed them to retrieve Elaine’s declaration from Margaret as a last resort.

Robert and Samuel had hidden different pieces in different places.

“Your father’s grave,” Daniel said.

Richard stared.

“What?”

“Samuel hid the amendment with himself.”

Richard understood.

“If Robert used the same logic…”

Robert Hale was buried twenty miles outside the city.

But before they could leave, Claire entered holding Sophie’s backpack.

“Daniel.”

He turned.

“What?”

“Sophie found something.”

Sophie appeared behind her.

She looked tired but determined.

In her hand was the broken purple crayon.

Daniel crouched.

“What did you find?”

She opened the backpack.

Inside the inner lining was a small black plastic strip.

Lena immediately took a closer look.

“A tracker?”

Sophie shook her head.

“The lady put it there.”

“Caroline?”

Sophie nodded.

“She said it was for my safety.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

Lena bagged the device.

An investigator examined it.

“This isn’t a tracker.”

“What is it?”

“Hardware key.”

Richard came closer.

“For what?”

The technician turned it over.

Tiny lettering was printed along the side.

MFC-RESERVE.

Mercer Family Continuity Reserve.

Daniel stared.

Whitmore had hidden a reserve-access key inside Sophie’s backpack.

Either he intended to retrieve it after the kidnapping—

or someone had deliberately ensured Sophie carried the one device capable of accessing the hidden six-hundred-forty-million-dollar reserve.

Click here to continue reading: PART 24: The Key Hidden With Sophie Unlocks Samuel
