notes.

Gregory had been present at Bellmont longer than Whitmore.

He knew Voss.

He knew Thomas.

He knew Harold.

He had access to Anna.

He had recommended Richard.

He had suppressed complaints.

He had altered accident records.

He had destroyed the car.

He had known where Eleanor lived for years.

And someone poisoned him precisely when he began fleeing.

Daniel looked at Richard.

“What if the poisoning wasn’t someone silencing him?”

Richard understood.

“What if it was staged?”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“To make him look like a victim.”

They immediately requested the hospital toxicology file.

The answer arrived within the hour.

Gregory had indeed ingested high-dose blood-pressure medication.

But the timing revealed something strange.

The pills had been taken approximately forty minutes before he reached the airport.

No evidence they were forced.

No sedative.

No injury indicating restraint.

Gregory could have taken them himself.

Richard whispered, “He may have staged the collapse.”

Daniel looked at the wall.

Not proof.

But possible.

Then Lena entered quickly.

“Gregory’s room is empty.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

“He’s gone.”

“Guard?”

“Found unconscious in the service hallway.”

Daniel’s pulse surged.

“How long?”

“Twenty minutes.”

“Cameras?”

“Disabled.”

“By whom?”

“We’re checking.”

Daniel looked at Adrian’s statement.

Gregory Shaw.

The man everyone had classified as coerced.

The man who had helped bury Anna’s crash.

The man who knew nearly every hidden relationship.

He had vanished at the precise moment the evidence began pointing back toward him.

Then Daniel’s restored phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Gregory’s voice.

Calm.

No weakness.

No hospital tremor.

“Daniel.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Where are you?”

“That isn’t important.”

“It is to me.”

“I know what you found.”

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Adrian’s statement?”

“Yes.”

“Anna’s recorder?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

Daniel felt cold.

“How?”

Gregory ignored the question.

“You are finally close enough to make the wrong decision.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps telling me that.”

“This time it’s true.”

“What decision?”

“Whether to believe Adrian.”

“I don’t believe anyone anymore.”

“Good.”

“Then give me something verifiable.”

Gregory was silent.

Daniel continued.

“Did you change the operation to murder?”

“No.”

“Did you help Whitmore assemble the authorization?”

“No.”

“Did you know who did?”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

Daniel’s heartbeat changed.

“Name.”

“I can’t give it to you over the phone.”

“Why?”

“Because Sophie is not the last Mercer in danger.”

Daniel stared.

“What does that mean?”

Gregory exhaled.

“Eleanor was moved twenty minutes ago.”

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

“By Lena’s team.”

“No.”

Daniel looked at Lena.

Her face changed.

She grabbed her phone.

Gregory continued.

“The convoy was redirected.”

Daniel’s grip tightened.

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who redirected it?”

Gregory answered.

“The same person who built the murder authorization.”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Who?”

This time Gregory gave him a name.

“Claire.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Richard stared.

Lena slowly lowered her phone.

“No,” Daniel said.

Gregory continued.

“Not because Anna’s sister wanted you dead.”

Daniel’s chest tightened.

“Then what are you saying?”

“I’m saying Claire’s identity was used.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Another identity.

Another mask.

Gregory continued.

“And if you want to know by whom, stop looking at the dead.”

The call ended.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then Lena spoke.

“The convoy really was redirected.”

“Where?”

“Instructions came through a valid protection channel.”

“Whose credentials?”

Lena looked at him.

“Mine.”

Daniel stared.

The person behind the final layer was still doing the same thing.

Using trusted identities.

Creating actions that looked legitimate.

Turning allies into suspects.

And now Eleanor Mercer had disappeared.

Click here to continue reading: PART 29: Eleanor’s Disappearance Leads Daniel to a Protection Channel No
