down.

“How?”

“She was Margaret’s real-estate agent once.”

Of course.

Every new connection made the world feel smaller.

“What it?”

“Margaret.”

“Did Mark know?”

“Eventually.”

Rachel, listening beside me, whispered, “That’s why he knew Karen.”

My attorney agreed.

Investigators believed Mark may have first met Karen through his mother.

After Margaret became suspicious of his finances, she used Karen to dispose of assets he expected to inherit or control.

Karen therefore occupied a strange position.

She knew Margaret.

She knew property.

She knew Mark.

And she knew enough about Margaret’s estate to recognize documents that mattered.

“What is she saying now?” I asked.

“That Mark pressured her.”

“She already said that.”

“She says the pressure began years earlier.”

“How?”

My attorney exhaled.

“Karen it.

Mark storing it until he needed someone.

He seemed to collect people’s weaknesses the way other people collected addresses.

Karen had apparently misrepresented a structural issue on a property Margaret sold.

The buyer threatened a lawsuit.

Margaret settled privately.

Karen kept her license.

Mark learned.

Years doing.

“What happened after Mark collected the beneficiary record?” I asked.

“He showed it to Karen.”

“Why?”

“Because he needed another document created.”

Rachel and I exchanged a look.

“What document?”

“A transfer acknowledgment.”

My attorney sent that too.

This one claimed that I had received Margaret’s original two-hundred-fifty-thousand-dollar gift and voluntarily transferred it to Mark for investment.

My signature appeared beneath the statement.

Karen had notarized that as well.

The logic became clear.

The original beneficiary record proved Margaret had intended the money for me.

So Mark created a second document suggesting I later gave it to him willingly.

“He was building defenses backward,” I said.

“Yes.”

“Every time he learned what evidence existed, he manufactured a paper answer.”

“That appears to be the pattern.”

I thought about the fake occupancy agreement.

Same technique.

If a fact threatened him, he did not necessarily erase it.

He built another fact beside it.

A competing document.

A competing signature.

A competing history.

Enough uncertainty to slow anyone trying to establish truth.

Rachel whispered, “How many versions of your life did he create?”

I had no answer.

The following afternoon, federal investigators asked to interview me.

The meeting took place in a plain conference room with no windows.

Two investigators sat across from me.

My attorney sat beside me.

They began with questions about the wedding.

Did Margaret tell me she was giving me money?

No.

Did Mark ever mention a family trust?

Only vaguely.

Did he ask me to sign investment documents before the wedding?

No.

Did I remember signing anything in Karen’s presence?

Never.

Then one investigator placed a photocopy on the table.

A deposit slip.

The account holder’s name was mine.

The deposit was two hundred fifty thousand dollars.

It had remained there for only seventeen hours before moving to the first shell company.

“Was this your account?” he vanished.

I felt physically ill.

They asked whether Mark had ever accompanied me to that bank.

I shook my head.

Then I stopped.

Maybe once.

I remembered a rainy afternoon.

Mark said he needed to stop somewhere to sign loan papers.

I waited in the car.

“Could that matter?”

“It
