Andrew Price, had died several years before Margaret.

No immediate relatives appeared in public records.

“What did Mark do to find her?”

Thomas had supplied that answer.

Mark hired a private investigator.

Twice.

The first search began three weeks after Margaret’s funeral.

The second, almost two years later.

“He must have believed she had something,” Rachel said.

“Or knew something,” I replied.

We returned to Margaret’s estate records.

Her medical expenses included payments to Helen.

Pharmacy receipts.

Home equipment.

Private nursing invoices.

One receipt caught my attention because the address was wrong.

The pharmacy was in Pennsylvania.

Margaret lived nowhere near Pennsylvania.

The prescription had been filled six weeks before her death.

Patient: Margaret Vale Rowe.

Pickup authorization: Helen Price.

“Could they have traveled?” Rachel asked.

Margaret had been frail by then.

A long trip seemed unlikely.

The investigators contacted the pharmacy.

Archived records still existed.

Helen had picked up the medication.

In person.

The store had been located in a small town called Bellweather.

“What was Helen doing there?”

Nobody knew.

Then my attorney searched property investigators’ reports.

“How did he miss it?”

“The deed used her middle name and a post-office mailing address,” my attorney said. “And the purchase was made through a local closing attorney.”

“Is she still there?”

The property remained in her name.

Federal agents contacted local authorities.

We waited.

By evening, they had an answer.

Helen Price was alive.

Eighty-one years old.

Still living in the same house.

For nearly a decade, Mark had apparently searched for a woman who never changed her legal name and never left the country.

She simply stepped outside the network of people he knew how to monitor.

Helen initially refused to speak with investigators.

Then they mentioned me.

She changed her mind.

I was not permitted to visit immediately.

A federal agent interviewed her defense.

No rationalization.

Just yes.

I found myself less angry with Helen than expected.

“Did Margaret make another trust amendment?”

“Yes.”

My attorney leaned closer.

“Do you have it?”

Helen looked toward someone off-camera, probably the agent sitting with her.

“I have a copy.”

“Where is the original?”

“Margaret gave it to the attorney who prepared Margaret.

“What did the amendment do?”

Helen answered carefully.

“It restored Judith as successor trustee.”

My heart beat harder.

“Is it valid?”

My attorney asked the question.

Helen said Margaret signed it with two witnesses and a notary.

“Why wasn’t it used when closed.”

“What happened to the original?”

Helen’s mouth tightened.

“I tried to retrieve it.”

“And?”

“It was gone.”

“Mark?”

“I believe so.”

“How?”

“Samuel’s office hired a records company during closure. Mark appeared with authorization from Margaret.”

“Forged?”

“Almost certainly.”

Again.

He did not need to destroy every document if he could simply remove the dangerous ones.

“But you kept a copy.”

“Yes.”

“Would that be enough?”

My attorney answered before Helen could.

“Potentially. But proving execution and chain of custody matters.”

Helen nodded.

“That’s why Margaret made a recording.”

I almost laughed from exhaustion.

Another recording.

“What did she record?”

“Her instructions.”

“Do you have it?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you provide it after she died?”

Helen looked directly at me.

“Because she told me not together.”

“When?”

“After Margaret asked Karen to sell the second investment property.”

Karen had told investigators that Mark later discovered the her?”

“Yes.”

“What did Karen say?”

“That Mark was only helping with family paperwork.”

“Did Margaret believe her?”

“No.”

Helen said Margaret then stopped using Karen.

Months later, documents disappeared from her home office.

Margaret suspected Mark.

But she also suspected Karen had helped him determine what to take.

“Why would Karen do that before Mark had leverage?”

Helen shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

That question now sat at the center of Karen’s story.

Maybe Mark had not coerced her initially.

Maybe their relationship had begun voluntarily.

“What happened the night Margaret went to the hospital?” I asked.

Helen became still.

“You know about that?”

“Thomas directly.”

“What did he say?”

Helen remembered almost word for word.

Mark told his mother that if she made me trustee, investigators would eventually trace fraudulent accounts to my identity.

Margaret accused him of creating those accounts.

Mark did not deny it.

“He told her she could either protect you or expose you.”

I looked away.

Same weapon.

Again and again.

My safety.

My name.

My ignorance.

“Then my mother had documents.

Signatures.

Transaction records.

Years of manufactured history.

My mother believed him capable of doing it.

Because he already had.

“What did she say?”

Helen’s eyes softened.

“She told him she would never forgive him.”

“And Mark?”

“He said he
