Some looked relieved. Others looked frightened. Several looked angry.

Those reactions felt more useful than applause.

Daniel stepped away from the podium and found Richard waiting near the side wall.

“You’re about to tell me something went wrong.”

Richard almost smiled. “You’ve become difficult to surprise.”

“What?”

“The restructuring team found a title problem.”

Daniel looked toward Sophie, who was sitting with Claire several rows back and drawing something on the folded program.

“How large?”

“Potentially large enough to affect the employee trust.”

“Which property?”

“Not one.”

Daniel’s expression holdings: three restaurant sites, two hotels, four development parcels, the original headquarters block, and one riverside warehouse converted into corporate event space.

All had entered Bellmont through Mercer-Rane entities decades earlier.

“All tied to the first-refusal agreement?” Daniel asked.

“Maybe.”

“Adrian’s side letter.”

“Yes.”

They moved into a smaller conference room.

Eleanor joined them.

Adrian’s authenticated side letter lay on the table beside property deeds and transaction histories.

Independent examiners had confirmed the document was genuine.

Joseph Mercer had promised Victor Rane first refusal if specific syndicate properties were ever sold outside the family partnership.

Samuel later renewed the promise in writing.

Then, over the following decades, the properties were transferred into Bellmont subsidiaries without any record of formal notice to Rane.

Eleanor read the list.

“So Adrian was right about something.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

She looked irritated by the fact.

“That is inconvenient.”

“Truth tends to be.”

Richard said, “The question is remedy.”

“Could Adrian reclaim the properties?” Daniel asked.

“Not automatically.”

“Money?”

“Potential damages, potentially significant.”

“How significant?”

Richard hesitated.

Daniel stared.

“Say the ugly number.”

“Two hundred to three hundred million, depending on valuation dates and enforceability.”

Eleanor whistled softly.

Daniel sat.

The employee ownership plan was still preliminary.

But its financial model assumed Bellmont retained all core real estate.

A major settlement could change everything.

“What does Adrian want?”

Richard looked at him.

“He sent an offer.”

“Already?”

“His lawyers are efficient.”

Eleanor muttered, “That family finally found something they’re good at.”

Richard slid over the proposal.

Adrian would waive all claims under the first-refusal agreement.

In exchange, Bellmont would transfer three river it?”

“No cash demand.”

“Why?”

Richard shrugged. “He may genuinely care about the record.”

Eleanor looked skeptical.

“Adrian cares about leverage.”

“Probably both,” Daniel said.

He called Adrian.

The secure line connected ten minutes later.

Adrian appeared calmer than he had during earlier interviews.

“I assume you read the proposal.”

“I did.”

“And?”

“Why no money?”

Adrian looked amused.

“Disappointed?”

“Suspicious.”

“Fair.”

Daniel waited.

Adrian leaned back.

“My father spent his life telling me Samuel Mercer stole his future.”

“And did he?”

“Not in the way I was told.”

That mattered.

Daniel said nothing.

Adrian continued.

“The property agreement was breached.”

“Yes.”

“But Victor also used Elaine, Eleanor, the trust system, and half the people around Bellmont as weapons.”

“Yes.”

“So if I demand the company now, I become him.”

Eleanor, sitting off-camera, raised an eyebrow.

Daniel said, “That realization came quickly.”

“It came late.”

The answer was better.

Adrian continued.

“I still want the history corrected.”

“That I can support if the evidence supports it.”

“It does.”

“Independent review decides wording.”

“Agreed.”

“And the river parcels?”

Adrian looked away for a moment.

“One contains the warehouse where Victor and Joseph signed the original syndicate papers.”

Daniel knew the building.

Bellmont used it for weddings and charity dinners now.

“What do you want done with it?”

“Archive.”

“Public?”

“Yes.”

“Whose story?”

“Everyone’s.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“That sounds dangerously reasonable.”

Adrian did not.

“The other parcels remain commercial.”

“Who governs?”

“Independent trustees.”

“No Rane control.”

“No Mercer control.”

Daniel glanced at Eleanor.

She nodded slowly.

“Employee trust interest?” Daniel asked.

Adrian paused.

“Possible.”

That interested Daniel.

“If Bellmont employees receive a stake in the river trust, I’ll consider it.”

Adrian frowned.

“Why?”

“Because the people who worked on those properties for thirty years should not disappear from the story either.”

Adrian considered.

“Fair.”

Daniel ended the call after directing counsel to continue.

Richard looked at him.

“You realize that was a negotiation.”

“Yes.”

“With Adrian Rane.”

“I noticed.”

Eleanor folded her arms.

“You two are disturbingly polite now.”

Daniel looked at her.

“We both ran out of dead relatives to weaponize.”

She laughed despite herself.

The property issue was serious but solvable.

That was new.

A problem where people could negotiate without kidnapping children or forging dead women’s signatures felt almost luxurious.

Then the interim restructuring adviser entered.

“Daniel, we have a second issue.”

He looked at Richard.

Richard raised both hands.

“Not mine.”

“What?”

The adviser placed a staffing report on the table.

“If we unwind the most aggressive expansion projects and reduce debt, approximately nine locations are likely to close.”

Daniel felt the weight immediately.

“How many employees?”

“Between six hundred and eight hundred.”

No trust conspiracy.

No hidden identity.

Just jobs.

“What alternatives?”

“Sell some locations.”

“To whom?”

“Private equity buyers have already expressed interest.”

Daniel frowned.

“How?”

“The restructuring discussion leaked.”

“Of course.”

The adviser continued.

“Another option is franchise conversion.”

“Would workers keep jobs?”

“Maybe.”

“That’s not enough.”

“Or Bellmont could subsidize underperforming locations for another year.”

“With what money?”

“Reserve distribution.”

Daniel shook his head.

“We are separating the reserve from operations.”

“Yes.”

“Then no.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“You are willing to close restaurants?”

“If keeping them open requires restoring the same family backstop we’re trying to eliminate.”

“That is going to hurt people.”

“Yes.”

Daniel hated the word.

But he refused to replace it with softer language.

The adviser said, “We can build a transition package.”

“Minimum?”

“Twelve weeks.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Six months.”

“That is expensive.”

“Yes.”

“Job placement?”

“Yes.”

“Priority transfers?”

“Yes.”

“Retraining?”

“Yes.”

The adviser took notes.

Daniel continued.

“And employees get first opportunity to propose local buyouts.”

The adviser looked up.

“Employee buyouts?”

“Yes.”

“Some locations may not qualify for financing.”

“Then we help structure it.”

Richard smiled faintly.

“You’re trying to turn restaurant closures into more employee ownership.”

“I’m trying not to decide every outcome from this room.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“That part is Anna.”

Daniel ignored the comment because it hurt and helped at the same time.

By evening, three different employee groups had already requested financial information to explore local ownership.

One was Bellmont House.

Daniel stared at the request.

“Who filed it?”

Richard checked.

“Luis Mendoza.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“He doesn’t even work there.”

“Apparently he has opinions.”

Emily’s name appeared second.

Then eleven more staff members.

They wanted to explore an employee cooperative model for Bellmont House if the broader company restructuring reduced central ownership.

Daniel read their proposal.

No special executive dining section.

Transparent tip policy.

Profit-sharing.

Staff-elected workplace committee.

Local management review.

Customer privacy rules stricter than corporate minimum.

Sophie wandered into Daniel’s home office while he was reading.

“What’s that?”

“People at the restaurant want to own part of it.”

“The cake restaurant?”

“Yes.”

“Can Emily own it?”

“Maybe.”

“Then she should.”

Daniel smiled.

“Finance may have more questions.”

Sophie climbed onto the chair beside him.

“What’s finance?”

“People who explain why simple things are expensive.”

She looked suspicious.

“Are they bad?”

“No.”

Daniel thought of Whitmore.

“Not automatically.”

He read the proposal again.

The company began because one family owned almost everything.

It nearly collapsed because too many people believed ownership justified control.

Perhaps Bellmont House—the place where the crisis became visible—could become the first property where the opposite became true.

He called Luis.

Luis answered cautiously.

“Mr. Mercer.”

“Daniel.”

A pause.

“Okay.”

“I read your proposal.”

“That was fast.”

“You marked it urgent.”

“We assumed corporate would ignore it unless we did.”

“Fair.”

Luis waited.

Daniel said, “You need a stronger financing plan.”

Silence.

Then Luis laughed.

“That’s your response?”

“You want me to say no?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Daniel continued.

“The debt assumptions are optimistic. Equipment replacement is understated. Your insurance estimate is wrong.”

Luis sighed.

“So corporate kills it with spreadsheets.”

“No.”

“I’m sending you an independent adviser.”

Luis went quiet.

“Why?”

“To help you fix it.”

Another silence.

“You’re serious.”

“Yes.”

“What does Bellmont get?”

“Fair market terms.”

“No control?”

“Minority protection during transition. Limited duration.”

“Then what?”

“If you succeed, you own it.”

Luis laughed again, but this time differently.

“Vanessa is going to lose her mind.”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“Do not make this about Vanessa.”

Luis stopped.

Daniel continued.

“If you build the restaurant around humiliating the person who failed, you’ll just create another version of the same place.”

“Fair.”

Daniel softened.

“Make it about the staff who stayed.”

“We can do that.”

The call ended.

Later that night, Richard delivered another document.

“What now?”

“Vanessa.”

Daniel sighed.

“What about her?”

“She wants to testify in the guest-intelligence investigation.”

“Against whom?”

“Gregory.”

Daniel frowned.

“She knows something else?”

“Apparently.”

“What?”

Richard sat.

“She says Gregory visited Bellmont House personally two weeks before your system.”

Daniel stared.

“What?”

Richard nodded.

“Vanessa says Gregory warned her the system was being audited and that customer appearance should no longer influence seating.”

Daniel leaned back.

“That contradicts her entire appeal.”

“Yes.”

“She argued corporate taught her to use it.”

“Both could be true.”

Daniel felt irritation.

“When did Gregory tell her to stop?”

“Two weeks before you arrived.”

“And she continued.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She says because Whitmore’s office sent updated revenue targets the next morning.”

Daniel stared.

Whitmore again.

But now the timeline mattered.

Gregory may have tried to dismantle the visible system before Daniel’s dinner.

Whitmore pushed revenue pressure afterward.

Vanessa chose the pressure.

“Did Whitmore specifically order discrimination?”

“No.”

“Then that remains Vanessa’s choice.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked toward the window.

But Gregory’s warning changed something.

He had been trying to shut down at least one part of the machinery before the investigation exploded.

“Why testify now?”

“She wants reduced civil exposure.”

“Reasonable.”

“Should we accept?”

“That’s prosecutors’ waited.

“He said, ‘If Mercer ever walks through this door, treat him like anyone else.’”

Daniel went still.

Richard continued.

“Vanessa claims she thought he meant not to give special treatment.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“Technically correct.”

“And she turned that into removing you.”

“Yes.”

Daniel thought about Gregory.

He had known where Daniel was vulnerable.

He had hidden facts.

Destroyed evidence.

Protected family.

Covered crimes.

But perhaps he had also tried, in small late ways, to change some of what he helped create.

That would not erase
