speak for itself.”

Officer Ramsey looked up sharply.

“Exact wording?”

“I don’t remember.”

“Did she mention the children?”

“No.”

“Your wife?”

“Yes.”

I felt cold.

“What did she say about me?”

Daniel took too long.

“Daniel.”

“She said eventually Sarah would become the dispute.”

The room went silent.

Ramsey asked, “Not become involved in the dispute?”

“No.”

Daniel looked at me.

“She wrote that you would become the dispute.”

I thought of Beverly standing beside the pool.

Maybe it won’t be for long.

The call to 911.

The camera.

The refused certified letter.

The deliberate effort to create official documentation on land legally tied to my name.

This had not started today.

Today had been escalation.

Officer Ramsey closed his notebook.

“I want that email recovered.”

Daniel nodded.

“I’ll check backups.”

“Do that.”

Ramsey looked at me.

“Until we understand what she meant, I recommend you don’t communicate with Mrs. Haskins directly.”

“That won’t be difficult.”

“She may be released while charges are reviewed.”

My stomach tightened.

“When?”

“Potentially tonight.”

I looked toward the dark backyard.

Ramsey followed my eyes.

“If she comes onto the property, call immediately.”

After he left, Daniel and I remained at the table.

Neither of us spoke for a while.

Finally he opened an old laptop backup drive.

The missing email appeared in an archived mail folder.

Subject: FINAL COURTESY.

Daniel opened it.

The message was short.

Most of it concerned legal filings.

Then came the last paragraph.

I read it twice.

You keep believing this is between you and me. It is not. You made Sarah the holder because you thought she was outside the fight. She is the fight now. When the time comes, the record will matter more than your explanations.

Below that was a final sentence.

And when she learns what you signed away, she will not blame me first.

I looked at Daniel.

“What did you sign away?”

He stared at the screen.

For the first time that night, he did not claim he had already told me everything.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Beverly’s Warning Was Not About Losing the House at All, and the Clause Daniel Had Buried Threatened Something Our Children Used Every Day

By nine that night, the children were asleep in the same bed.
