37 – Months After the Case Quieted, Roy Sent Arthur’s Fishing Lure Back With a Question I Was Finally Ready to Answer

Winter arrived without ceremony.

One morning the lawn was brown.

The next, frost silvered Margaret’s roses and made the porch steps shine.

Arthur always scattered far too much salt on the front walk.

He claimed ice respected enthusiasm more than measurement.

I used half as much.

Nobody fell.

I considered that evidence against him and then caught myself using the word evidence.

Some habits lasted.

The house had become quieter in ways I was beginning to appreciate.

Not empty.

Quiet.

There was a difference.

Arthur’s radio played most mornings.

Margaret’s gravy boat still sat in the cabinet looking ridiculous.

The wooden box of important junk remained on the bookshelf.

The shoebox of medication records and photographs stayed downstairs behind a locked metal drawer.

Sometimes I forgot it existed.

That felt like recovery.

Sandra visited every Sunday.

Not because we agreed Sunday would become our day.

It simply happened.

First she brought soup.

Then groceries.

Then nothing.

Eventually she stopped knocking twice and waiting nervously after the first knock.

She still knocked once.

That mattered to both of us.

Melissa came when work allowed.

She repaired a loose cabinet hinge one afternoon and refused payment.

I told her Arthur would have insisted.

She said Arthur owed her several years of back wages anyway.

We agreed the estate could not afford her rates.

Roy remained in custody.

His treatment program had started.

He wrote less frequently.

That also seemed healthy.

His first letters had been confessions almost disguised as correspondence.

Later ones became ordinary.

He complained about institutional coffee.

Asked whether Sandra had bought the silver.

Wanted to know if Melissa still had his father’s fishing lure.

He never asked me for money.

Never asked about the trust.

Never asked whether I could speak to the prosecutor.

Every absence mattered.

One January afternoon, a padded envelope arrived from Roy.

Through approved channels.

Inside was the small red-and-silver fishing lure Melissa had received at Lake Crescent.

I frowned.

Melissa still had it.

Or I thought she did.

Then I saw the scratches.

These initials were different.

RM.

Roy’s.

A note accompanied it.

Helen,

This was mine.

Dad gave it to me when I was fourteen.

I took it to the lake the night I went there after everything fell apart.

I found it in an old tackle box at the cabin.

I almost threw it into the water.

I did not.

The next line made me smile despite myself.

That would have been dramatic and Dad would have hated losing usable equipment.

Accurate.

Roy continued.

I am sending it because I do not know whether it belongs with Dad’s things, Sandra’s things, my things, or nowhere.

I stopped there.

Old Roy would have decided ownership through emotion.

My father gave it to me, therefore mine.

Family object, therefore family.

Value became entitlement.

Now he was asking.

Maybe too late.

Still asking.

His letter continued.

My counselor says the question might be why I need everything to belong somewhere before I can let it mean anything.

I do not know what that means.

That sounded like Roy too.

He had always preferred concrete problems.

Debt amount.

Property value.

Trust balance.

A lure could not be calculated.

Then came the question.

Did Dad ever forgive me?

I set the letter down.

There it was.

Not whether I forgave him.

Arthur.

The person unavailable to answer.

I made coffee.

Walked outside.

Came back in.

Read the question again.

Did Dad ever forgive me?

I could have answered quickly.

Yes.

Arthur loved you.

Arthur kept offering you paths back.

Arthur built rehabilitation provisions.

Arthur left the Lake Crescent recording.

Arthur preserved photographs of you.

But forgiveness was not the same as love.

Arthur had taught us that through everything else.

I did not know if Arthur forgave Roy completely.

Maybe Arthur did not know either.

I called Katz.

Not because he had the answer.

Because he might know whether Arthur had said anything directly.

“Did Arthur ever write that he forgave Roy?”

Katz paused.

“Not in any estate instruction I recall.”

“Did he say it?”

“He said many contradictory things.”

“That sounds promising.”

“He said, ‘I may forgive him before he deserves it.’”

I closed my eyes.

Arthur.

“Anything else?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Different day. He said, ‘Forgiveness is not useful if Roy thinks it means access to the checkbook.’”

I laughed.

“That too.”

“Another time he said, ‘I am too angry to know what forgiveness means this week.’”

That was the most honest.

“So no clean answer.”

“No.”

“Good.”

Katz sounded amused.

“You’re relieved?”

“Yes.”

Because a clean answer would tempt me to speak for Arthur.

I had become wary of doing that.

Later, Sandra came over.

I showed her Roy’s letter.

She read the question.

“Did Dad forgive him?”

“I don’t know.”

She frowned.

“You really don’t?”

“No.”

“He loved him.”

“Yes.”

“He wanted him to tell the truth.”

“Yes.”

“He built that rehabilitation thing.”

“Yes.”

“So?”

“So none of those sentences says forgiveness.”

Sandra looked irritated.

Then thoughtful.

“I hate that you’re right.”

“You’re welcome.”

She held the lure.

“This was Roy’s.”

“So he says.”

“I remember it.”

“When?”

“He hooked Dad’s hat with it once.”

I laughed.

“On purpose?”

“Roy said no.”

“Was it?”

“Absolutely.”

She turned the lure between her fingers.

“He should keep it.”

“That’s what I think.”

“Then send it back.”

“With what answer?”

Sandra looked at me.

“Tell him Dad loved him.”

“That’s not what he asked.”

She sighed.

“Right.”

We sat in silence.

Then she said, “Maybe tell him Dad died before there was a final answer.”

That was true.

Not emotionally satisfying.

Still true.

Arthur’s final months held anger, love, disappointment, hope, fear, and deliberate boundary.

Maybe forgiveness was moving among those things rather than replacing them.

I wrote back.

Roy,

I do not know whether your father had reached forgiveness in the way you mean before he died.

He loved you.

He was angry with you.

He wanted you to tell the truth.

He stopped rescuing you.

He left you a way to get help without giving you control.

All of those things were true at the same time.

I am not going to turn them into one word because you want certainty.

That sentence sounded harsher than I intended.

I kept it.

Roy needed less translation, not more.

Then:

The lure is yours.

Your father gave it to you.

Keep it.

You do not need to put every object into the estate of your guilt.

I smiled at that line.

Arthur might have approved.

I added:

If you need to know what your father thought of you, listen to the entire recording again, including the parts you dislike.

Do not ask dead people to simplify themselves because living with complexity is uncomfortable.

Helen.

I mailed the lure back.

Two weeks later, Roy wrote only:

Okay.

No argument.

That one word pleased me more than any apology.

February brought snow.

Not much.

Enough to cover Hawthorne Lane overnight.

Sandra arrived Sunday carrying a pie.

“What is that?”

“Blueberry.”

“Why?”

“Roy wrote me.”

I waited.

“He remembered the snowstorm pie.”

Arthur’s story.

Roy driving through dangerous weather because Margaret wanted a specific pie from a bakery fifty miles away.

“He asked if I remembered what kind.”

“And?”

“Blueberry.”

She put it on the counter.

“I didn’t.”

“He did.”

We cut it.

Too sweet.

Arthur would have complained.

Sandra took one bite and started crying.

I waited.

“Mom loved this.”

“I know.”

“Roy remembered.”

“Yes.”

She wiped her face.

“I keep wanting his good memories to mean he wasn’t the person who did those things.”

“They don’t.”

“I know.”

“They also don’t become false because he did those things.”

She nodded.

That distinction still hurt.

Maybe it always would.

Later that afternoon, Melissa joined us.

She brought a photograph.

Roy and Arthur at Lake Crescent.

Not the famous rain-soaked one.

Another.

Arthur older.

Roy perhaps forty.

Both standing beside a small boat.

On the back, Arthur wrote:

Roy caught nothing and lied about one fish.

Melissa laughed.

“Grandpa kept receipts on everyone.”

Apparently.

We added the photograph to Arthur’s wooden box.

Not because it was evidence.

Because it belonged to the important junk.

Then Melissa asked something unexpected.

“Would you ever let Uncle Roy come back here?”

The room became quiet.

Hawthorne Lane.

My home.

The place Roy measured before Arthur died.

The place he broke into after.

The place he wanted as collateral.

The place Arthur built an entire trust to protect from him.

Sandra looked toward me but said nothing.

Good.

This was mine.

“I don’t know.”

Melissa nodded.

“Would Grandpa?”

I looked at her.

“That’s not my answer to give.”

She smiled faintly.

“You sound like Grandpa.”

“Unfortunately.”

I thought about Roy standing outside the storm door with court papers.

About the kitchen door splintered.

About the tracker on my car.

About his letter:

Do not confuse forgiveness with access.

“No,” I said finally.

Both women looked at me.

“Not now.”

Melissa nodded.

Sandra looked relieved and ashamed of being relieved.

I continued.

“Maybe someday I could meet him somewhere else.”

“That’s fair,” Melissa said.

“Maybe someday I could let him sit on the porch.”

Sandra smiled sadly.

“Very specific.”

“Boundaries should be.”

Arthur learned that too late.

I intended to practice earlier.

Spring approached.

Katz called one morning with another routine update.

Roy’s restitution plan had been approved.

Funds from his supervised provisions could be directed toward legitimate obligations, not personal spending.

Peter’s proceedings continued.

Elaine had completed her formal cooperation agreement.

Donna was rebuilding her career under restrictions.

Lives moved.

Not cleanly.

But moved.

Before hanging up, Katz said:

“Roy asked the trustee whether he could voluntarily disclaim any future claim to Hawthorne Lane.”

I frowned.

“He has no current claim.”

“Correct.”

“Then why?”

“Symbolic, I assume.”

“Can he?”

“He can execute an acknowledgment of no present interest and waive certain contest rights.”

“Would that help legally?”

“Marginally.”

“Emotionally?”

“I am the wrong profession.”

I smiled.

“Why do you think he wants it?”

“He told the trustee, ‘I want Helen to know I stopped measuring the garage.’”

I closed my eyes.

That sentence hurt.

Not because I believed everything was fixed.

Because Roy remembered the photograph.

Me catching him with the tape measure.

Arthur seeing it.

Arthur putting it into the record.

The garage had become shorthand for all the ways Roy treated future grief as present property.

“Tell Katz—”

“You’re speaking to Katz.”

“Right. Tell Roy he doesn’t need to sign symbolic paperwork for me.”

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“What should I tell him?”

I thought.

“Tell him to stop measuring things.”

Katz laughed.

“I can convey that.”

A week later, another letter.

Helen,

Katz says you told me to stop measuring things.

I am trying.

Roy.

That was all.

I folded it.

Placed it not with legal documents.

Not with Arthur’s box.

In my desk drawer.

Roy’s life was becoming his own story again.

That felt right.

One afternoon I walked into the garage.

Arthur’s tools still lined the wall.

The tape measure Roy once used sat in a drawer.

I picked it up.

For a ridiculous second, I considered throwing it away.

Then laughed.

Arthur would have complained.

Perfectly good tool.

So I used it to measure a shelf.

Twenty-nine inches.

Nothing symbolic.

Just a shelf.

That may have been the first time in years measurement inside that garage meant exactly what it appeared to mean.

Click here to continue reading: PART 38: Sandra’s Decision About Margaret’s Silver Tested Whether She Had Really Changed, and This Time Nobody Needed Arthur’s Rules to Stop Her

Winter arrived without ceremony.
