antiques dealer called Sandra in March.

Another piece of Margaret’s silver had surfaced.

One of the two pieces she had believed permanently lost.

A small covered dish.

Expensive.

More expensive now because another dealer owned it.

Sandra called me immediately.

“I found it.”

“What?”

“The covered dish.”

“Good.”

“No.”

Her tone was wrong.

“What happened?”

“They want forty-eight hundred dollars.”

I whistled.

Margaret apparently had excellent taste in everything except gravy boats.

“Can you afford that?”

“No.”

There was silence.

Old Sandra would have found a way to make ownership feel inevitable.

Borrow.

Ask Melissa.

Use trust money.

Explain that Margaret wanted it.

Turn emotion into entitlement.

Instead she said:

“So I’m not buying it.”

I waited.

“That’s it?”

“What else?”

“You called sounding like somebody died.”

“It feels awful.”

“Those things can coexist.”

Arthur’s language had infected me permanently.

Sandra groaned.

“Stop.”

“You cannot afford it.”

“I know.”

“You want it.”

“Yes.”

“Still cannot afford it.”

“Yes.”

“Then you’re not buying it.”

“I know.”

She sounded annoyed.

Then laughed.

“I called because I wanted someone to tell me I’m allowed to be sad without solving it.”

That was new.

“Yes.”

“You are.”

“Thank you.”

She hung up.

A week later, the dealer called again.

A private buyer had purchased the piece.

Sandra cried.

Then did nothing.

No dramatic attempt to contact the buyer.

No request for Katz to intervene.

No trust distribution.

No manipulation.

The object left.

The memory stayed.

Arthur had been right.

A missing possession did not erase Margaret.

That lesson seemed almost insultingly simple after everything required to learn it.

Sandra began volunteering at the oncology unit that received Arthur’s charitable bequest.

Not because Arthur required it.

Not as penance.

She told me she had spent too many years avoiding hospitals after Margaret died.

Now she wanted to stop flinching every time she smelled disinfectant.

The first week she lasted forty minutes.

Second week, two hours.

Third week, she called me from the parking lot crying.

“I hate this.”

“Then stop.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t hate helping.”

She sniffed.

“I hate remembering.”

“Different problem.”

“Yes.”

She returned the following week.

No one gave her a medal.

Good.

Not everything had to become redemption theater.

Melissa’s life continued too.

She started seeing someone named Daniel.

Not Officer Bennett.

We clarified that immediately because Sandra nearly choked when Melissa said the name.

This Daniel taught middle-school science and apparently owned five bicycles for reasons nobody understood.

Arthur would have distrusted him solely on bicycle quantity.

Melissa brought him to dinner.

I cooked Margaret’s rosemary chicken.

He ate two servings.

Sandra whispered, “He’s either polite or lacks taste.”

“Both useful qualities.”

The dinner was normal.

That felt extraordinary.

No one discussed criminal cases.

No one mentioned trusts until Daniel asked why the gravy boat had eyes.

Sandra and I both shouted, “THANK YOU.”

Melissa looked horrified.

Daniel looked pleased with himself.

Life had room for nonsense again.

Roy wrote to Sandra occasionally.

Their letters became less confessional too.

He asked about Melissa.

The garden.

Whether the lake cabin still had the damaged railing.

Sandra answered selectively.

Not every question.

Not immediately.

That was healthy.

One letter included a request.

“Could you send me Mom’s blueberry pie recipe?”

Sandra stared at the paper for a long time.

Then opened Margaret’s recipe book.

She found the card.

Started copying it.

Stopped.

I watched.

“What?”

“She wrote a note.”

“What?”

Sandra read:

Roy likes extra lemon.

Her eyes filled.

Margaret had remembered something as trivial as her son’s preferred pie flavor.

Twenty-two years of anger did not erase a handwritten kitchen note.

Sandra copied the recipe.

Including:

Extra lemon for Roy.

She did not send the original.

Good.

Ownership and access.

Again.

Roy wrote back:

I forgot she did that.

No apology.

None needed.

In April, Bennett came to Hawthorne Lane.

Not on official business.

He had a folder anyway.

I accused him of being incapable of social behavior without paper.

He did not deny it.

Peter’s case had reached resolution.

I did not ask for every detail.

I no longer needed them.

He had admitted providing the medication, participating in fraudulent planning, selling property he knew likely belonged to Arthur, and later giving false information.

His cooperation changed some outcomes.

His conduct determined others.

“Did he ever explain why he kept helping Roy?” I asked.

Bennett sat at the kitchen table.

“Several explanations.”

“Which is true?”

“Probably all partly.”

Resentment toward Arthur.

Money.

Fear of exposure.

Habit.

The strange bond created by decades of mutual secrets.

“And Elaine?”

“Continuing restitution and compliance.”

“Donna?”

“Working under professional restrictions.”

The people who once occupied every thought had become updates.

That was progress.

Then Bennett handed me a small evidence-release form.

“The coin collection.”

Arthur’s father’s gold coins.

“Returned?”

“To the estate.”

I stared.

“What do I do with them?”

“Katz decides legal distribution. I just move property from evidence.”

More paperwork.

Arthur’s favorite.

Katz later told me the coins belonged to the family trust.

Arthur had left no special instruction.

Sandra immediately said:

“Melissa.”

Melissa immediately said:

“No.”

They argued.

I watched.

Sandra said the coins should go to her daughter.

Melissa said they should remain in trust.

Sandra said family objects mattered.

Melissa said that sounded suspiciously like old Sandra.

Silence.

Then Sandra laughed.

“You’re right.”

That sentence still amazed me every time.

Eventually Katz suggested displaying one coin temporarily at Hawthorne Lane and keeping the rest secured until trust administration determined appropriate treatment.

No one loved the solution.

Therefore it was probably good.

We placed one coin in Arthur’s wooden box.

Not because it belonged emotionally.

Because Arthur’s father did.

A small piece of history.

Weeks passed.

The rosebush bloomed.

I pruned it myself.

Badly.

Sandra arrived and criticized me.

I told her plants were resilient.

She said that was not an excuse for butchery.

We argued.

At some point I realized I no longer monitored her tone for hostility.

She no longer monitored mine for insult.

We could simply annoy each other.

Family, perhaps.

One Sunday she arrived later than usual.

Her face looked wrong.

“What happened?”

She sat at the kitchen table.

“Roy called.”

He had been allowed a supervised call.

“What did he say?”

“He asked me to forgive him.”

Directly.

Not through letters.

Not someday.

Now.

“What did you say?”

“No.”

I waited.

Sandra looked frightened by her own answer.

“I said I wasn’t ready.”

“That seems accurate.”

“He cried.”

“You cried.”

“Yes.”

“Then?”

“He said okay.”

Again.

No pressure.

No accusation.

“He asked if I still loved him.”

“What did you say?”

“Yes.”

“That also seems accurate.”

Sandra stared at the table.

“How can I say I love him and not forgive him?”

“Easily.”

“That sounds terrible.”

“No.”

I sat opposite her.

“Arthur loved Roy while being furious with him.”

“Yes.”

“You loved Margaret while taking things she didn’t leave you.”

Sandra winced.

“Fair.”

“People carry contradictions.”

“I know.”

“You don’t have to clean them up immediately.”

Sandra looked toward the shelf where Arthur’s wooden box sat.

“Dad spent years cleaning up everyone’s contradictions.”

“Yes.”

“Maybe that’s what made everything worse.”

Sometimes.

He paid debts so Roy could remain both irresponsible and successful.

Protected secrets so people could remain both guilty and respectable.

Avoided correcting Sandra so she could remain both loving daughter and entitled heir.

Peace through unresolved contradiction.

Margaret had warned him.

Do not purchase peace.

The interest comes due later.

Sandra breathed slowly.

“I told Roy I might forgive him someday.”

“That was generous.”

“I also told him even if I do, I will never help him with money.”

I smiled.

“More generous.”

She laughed.

Then grew serious.

“Do you forgive him?”

The question returned.

Months earlier I did not know.

Now?

“I think I do.”

Sandra stared.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“What does that feel like?”

“Less interesting than I expected.”

She laughed.

I continued.

“I don’t wake up wanting him punished more.”

“He is already being punished.”

“Exactly.”

“I don’t replay the storm-door argument very often.”

“What about the pill?”

That remained harder.

“I still get angry.”

“So you haven’t forgiven him.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“Forgiveness isn’t amnesia.”

“What is it then?”

“I don’t know.”

She groaned.

“Useless.”

“Yes.”

Then I said what felt truest.

“I no longer need Roy to suffer in order for what he did to feel real.”

Sandra became quiet.

That was it.

For me.

I did not need revenge as proof.

The records existed.

Arthur knew.

Roy admitted.

Courts acted.

Consequences stood.

My anger no longer had to guard the truth.

Sandra looked at the silver spoon in the dining cabinet.

“Maybe that’s why I kept taking Mom’s things.”

“What do you mean?”

“I thought if I physically had enough pieces of her, nobody could replace her.”

I looked toward Margaret’s photograph beside ours.

“No one replaced her.”

“I know.”

“Now.”

“Yes.”

She smiled faintly.

“Now.”

That afternoon we made Margaret’s blueberry pie from the copied recipe.

Extra lemon.

Neither of us liked it.

We ate two slices anyway.

Arthur would have called that sentimental inefficiency.

For once, I was comfortable being inefficient.

Click here to continue reading: PART 39: Roy’s First Visit Outside Custody Brought Him Back Near
