Leon was meticulous by nature. He kept duplicate receipts, labeled spare keys, maintained lists of insurance contacts, and believed every household should possess enough batteries to survive a small apocalypse.

After his death, I could not open the folder.

It felt too much like violating the final boundary he had drawn.

But somebody had now attempted six transactions involving my finances, including $18,500 connected to Huitt family property.

That qualified as necessary.

I turned the key.

The cabinet clicked open.

The blue folder lay exactly where I remembered, a fine gray line of dust along its edges.

I carried it to the kitchen.

For a while I simply looked at it.

Then I opened the cover.

The first document was a deed.

I knew the property immediately.

The lake cabin.

Leon and I had bought it when Toby was six. Calling it a cabin had always been generous. It was a squat little building on a beautiful piece of land, with unreliable plumbing and a porch that leaned enough to make a marble roll downhill.

Leon adored it.

So did Toby.

Every summer they disappeared there for several days with fishing rods, sleeping bags, marshmallows, and entirely too little sunscreen.

After Leon died, I had considered selling.

I never did.

The land had appreciated substantially.

I turned the page.

Another property document.

A bank statement.

Legal correspondence.

Then an account name I had never seen.

Huitt Family Preservation Trust.

I read it again.

The trust had been established on September 14, 2014.

Two months before Leon died.

My pulse quickened.

The listed assets included the lake property.

An investment account.

Then I saw the third asset.

My home.

I pushed the paper away.

“No.”

I pulled it back and read more carefully.

The house was held by the trust.

I had lived in it all these years without understanding the structure Leon had put around it.

A handwritten note had been clipped behind the document.

The writing was unmistakably his.

Mara—

I stopped.

Seeing Leon’s handwriting after so many years was more intimate than hearing an old recording. I could picture the pressure of his hand on the pen, the slight rightward tilt of certain letters, the way he always crossed his t too high.

I continued.

The note explained that he had created the arrangement not because he distrusted me, but because he worried other people might eventually exploit our family after his death.

My eyes blurred.

I wiped them and kept reading.

Toby was named as beneficiary.

But he could not simply demand the assets.

Conditions governed access.

Age.

Education.

Marriage provisions.

Then one clause caught my attention.

Distribution could be restricted if the beneficiary was being financially coerced or acting under another person’s direction.

I sat back.

The birthday party returned to me.

Sherry taking control.

Paige telling me to step aside.

The unauthorized charges.

The attempted $18,500 transaction.

I turned another page.

The trustee was Harold Mercer.

I knew the name.

Harold had been Leon’s friend and attorney. Years earlier he had helped with business matters, contracts, and investments. After Leon died, Harold gradually disappeared from my life, and I assumed he had retired.

A telephone number was listed beside his name.

Before calling, I examined the remaining papers.

Printed emails.

Financial statements.

Correspondence.

Then a letter dated three weeks before Leon died.

It was from Harold.

The opening lines referred to questions being asked by Toby.

I froze.

Toby had been twelve.

I read further.

Harold believed Toby was too young to understand the financial issues he had begun mentioning and suspected an adult was prompting his questions.

Then a familiar name appeared.

Sherry Lamb.

I stopped breathing for a moment.

At that time Sherry was not family.

She was simply Paige’s mother.

Paige and Toby were teenagers who knew each other.

Yet according to the correspondence, Sherry had asked questions about the lake property.

Who owned it?

Did Leon carry life insurance?

Would Toby inherit anything?

Why would the mother of a teenage girl need to know those things?

I turned the page.

Leon had added a note.

The wording was brief.

He did not want me confronting Sherry.

If she ever became involved with Huitt family finances, I was to contact Harold.

My hands felt numb.

The kitchen clock read 9:17.

I called.

A man answered after two rings.

“Hello?”

“Harold Mercer?”

“Yes.
