useful.”

“What?”

“Your consent.”

“For the road.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Sherry.

She had gone white.

Voss continued.

“Sign the access release, and Helen goes home.”

I felt every emotion disappear except clarity.

For thirty years, Leon had refused.

For days, everyone had lied, pressured, forged, manipulated, and stolen to reach the same point.

The road.

I said, “No.”

Toby grabbed my arm.

Sherry stared.

Even Harold looked shocked.

Voss remained calm.

“You should think carefully.”

“I have.”

“Mara.”

“No.”

I heard myself breathe.

“If you needed only my signature, you would have asked years ago.”

Silence.

“So there’s something else you’re afraid Helen can prove.”

No answer.

That was answer enough.

I looked at Harold.

He understood.

The ledger was worth more than the road.

It contained something Voss could not allow to survive.

I said into the phone, “You don’t want my land.”

Voss’s voice cooled.

“What do you think I want?”

“The evidence.”

The line went quiet.

Then he said, “Leon always was clever.”

My throat tightened.

“You knew my husband.”

“Yes.”

“How well?”

“Enough to know he should have taken the deal.”

I closed my eyes.

“And enough to know he wouldn’t.”

“Yes.”

The man who had spent decades hidden behind initials finally sounded almost amused.

Then he gave me an address.

An old marina on the north side of the lake.

“One hour.”

“For what?”

“Bring Harold Mercer.”

Harold stared at me.

“And the trust release.”

“What about police?”

Voss paused.

“You may bring whoever you like.”

That surprised everyone.

“Confident?” I asked.

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“Prepared.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Harold whispered, “He wants something legal.”

“Yes.”

Toby looked between us.

“What?”

I understood before Harold did.

“Not a signature.”

Harold’s face changed.

“A witnessed signature.”

“Yes.”

Voss wanted the trust attorney present.

Not merely to pressure me.

To make whatever happened next look legitimate.

I picked up Leon’s blue folder.

For the first time, I finally understood why he had built everything around procedure.

Signatures.

Witnesses.

Restrictions.

Independent records.

He knew powerful people could fabricate paper.

So he built protections that required too many people to corrupt at once.

I looked at Harold.

“We’re going.”

Toby said, “Then I’m coming.”

Paige entered behind him.

Her face was wet from crying.

“So am I.”

Sherry stood.

Everyone turned.

She said quietly, “You’ll need me.”

Paige looked at her.

“Why?”

Sherry’s answer changed everything again.

“Because Voss doesn’t know I kept a copy of the one document Leon never found.”

“What document?”

“The original North Cape ownership agreement.”

Harold stared.

“You have it?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Sherry looked at Paige.

“In the last place Calvin would ever search.”

Paige understood first.

“My childhood bedroom.”

Sherry nodded.

“And if that document says what I think it says, Jonathan Voss has spent thirty years protecting a secret much bigger than Raven Creek.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 21: Sherry’s Hidden North Cape Agreement Named the
