found a legitimate trustee amendment approved three years earlier through a standard legal process.

Daniel’s signature appeared at the bottom.

He stared at it.

“I further.

“The existing trustees.”

“So Samuel and Vale could choose the third.”

“Yes.”

Daniel stared at the paper.

“If of her childhood.

Richard closed the document.

“Anna must have found this.”

Daniel thought of the trust created in Sophie’s name.

The forged evidence making him look like he had stolen from Bellmont for family benefit.

If that fraud surfaced and Daniel was arrested, incapacitated, or died, Bellmont could pass into trustee agreed.

The storage facility by the river had been built from converted warehouses.

Ruiz ordered Daniel to remain several blocks away until agents cleared the site.

This looks.”

Daniel stared ahead.

“A restaurant manager tried to throw me out because of my boots.”

“And now we’re investigating an attempted corporate later.

“We have Morris.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Safe?”

“For now.”

She opened the door.

“He wants Daniel present.”

Ruiz clearly disliked that.

Daniel followed.

Inside the storage unit, Morris sat on a folding chair with his hands visible.

Two federal agents stood behind him.

The evidence containers were stacked on a table.

Unopened.

Ruiz entered first.

“You stole evidence from federal custody.”

Morris looked exhausted.

“I removed evidence after receiving a verified destruction order.”

“Using my authorization.”

“I didn’t use your authorization.”

“Someone did.”

“Exactly.”

Ruiz stared.

“Why didn’t you call me?”

“Because your credentials authorized the destruction.”

That landed.

Morris continued.

“I didn’t know whether it was you.”

Ruiz’s expression tightened.

“Four years, Caleb.”

“I know.”

“And you thought I was compromised?”

“I thought anyone could be.”

Daniel understood painfully well.

Morris looked at him.

“Anna taught me that.”

Daniel stiffened.

“How well did you know my wife?”

“Not well.”

“You contacted her.”

“She contacted me.”

“When?”

“Seven weeks before the crash.”

“Why?”

“She found my name in an old Vale investigation file.”

Ruiz frowned.

“You worked Vale?”

“I was junior staff.”

“Why isn’t that in your task-force disclosure?”

“Because the case was closed years before Bellmont surfaced.”

Ruiz looked unconvinced.

Morris turned to Daniel.

“Anna believed Vale was using Bellmont vendor money to influence development deals.”

“We know.”

“She had something else.”

“What?”

“A recording.”

Daniel’s heartbeat quickened.

“Of whom?”

“She wouldn’t say.”

“Did you hear it?”

“No.”

“What did she tell you?”

“That it proved the scheme was about control of Bellmont, not cash.”

Daniel looked at Richard.

Exactly what the succession documents suggested.

Morris continued.

“She planned to give it to me.”

“When?”

“The night she crashed.”

Everything in Daniel stopped.

“What?”

Morris swallowed.

“We were supposed to meet.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where?”

“A diner near the interstate.”

“What time?”

“Eight-thirty.”

Daniel remembered that night with painful precision.

Anna had told him she was going to the office.

She had called him at 7:52.

Said she would be late.

Said goodnight to Sophie over speakerphone.

Her crash occurred at 8:17.

She had never been driving home.

She had been driving toward Morris.

“Why didn’t you tell police?”

“I did.”

Daniel stared.

“What?”

“I gave a statement.”

Richard said, “There’s no mention of you in the accident file.”

“I know.”

Morris looked at Ruiz.

“My statement disappeared.”

Ruiz’s expression changed.

“Who took it?”

“Supervisory agent on duty.”

“Name?”

Morris hesitated.

“Frank Delaney.”

Ruiz knew it.

Daniel saw that.

“Who is he?”

“Former section chief,” Ruiz said.

“Where is he now?”

“Retired.”

Daniel almost laughed again.

Everyone important eventually became dead, retired, or missing.

Morris continued.

“Two days after the crash, Delaney told me the meeting was irrelevant to a traffic fatality.”

“You accepted that?”

“No.”

“What did you do?”

“I kept looking.”

“For three years?”

“Yes.”

“Alone?”

“Mostly.”

“Vanessa?”

“She became a source later.”

“Why didn’t you come to me?”

“Because Anna told me not to.”

Daniel’s anger returned.

“Everyone keeps following my dead wife’s instructions three years after she can explain them.”

Morris met his eyes.

“She believed approaching you would trigger the succession plan.”

Daniel stopped.

“What succession plan?”

“She knew Vale Fiduciary had been inserted into your trust.”

“Before she died?”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at Richard.

Anna had discovered more than any of them realized.

Morris continued.

“She believed the network needed one of two things.”

“What?”

“Your removal from operational control.”

“And the second?”

“Your death.”

No one spoke.

Daniel felt strangely calm.

Perhaps because the idea no longer sounded impossible.

Morris leaned forward.

“Anna thought they would prefer scandal.”

“Why?”

“Because killing you would create scrutiny. Destroying your credibility would create consent.”

Richard whispered, “The trust money.”

Morris nodded.

“Frame Daniel as embezzling Bellmont assets for Sophie. Trigger board action. Remove him. Let the succession trustees stabilize the company.”

“And Vale ends up controlling it.”

“Eventually.”

Daniel paced once.

“Then why attack Sophie?”

Morris shook his head.

“That doesn’t fit Anna’s model.”

Ruiz asked, “Unless the model changed.”

“Or someone wants Daniel to believe it changed.”

Daniel turned.

The safe-room attack.

The recorder.

The name Voss deliberately left behind.

Perhaps Sophie had never been the intended target.

Perhaps the attack was designed to force Daniel toward a conclusion.

“What did they actually take from Westlake?” he asked.

Richard frowned.

“Nothing.”

“Exactly.”

Morris understood.

“They could have searched for the drive.”

“But they went directly to the safe room.”

Ruiz said, “Because they knew Claire and Sophie were there.”

Daniel nodded.

“And left a recorder where we would find it.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“You think the whole attack was theater.”

“No.”

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“My daughter was in real danger.”

“But?”

“But whoever planned it wanted us to hear ‘Voss.’”

Morris looked at Ruiz.

“That points away from someone else.”

Daniel asked, “Who benefits if we decide Samuel is the architect?”

No immediate answer.

Then Morris said, “Vale.”

The name settled heavily.

Ruiz turned to him.

“You have evidence Vale is active?”

“Not directly.”

“Then don’t leap.”

Morris nodded.

Daniel appreciated that she demanded the same discipline from everyone.

Richard’s phone rang.

He answered.

“Yes?”

His expression changed.

“Where?”

He looked at Daniel.

“Thomas Bell.”

The retired trust administrator.

“They found him?”

Richard nodded.

“He agreed to meet investigators.”

“Good.”

Richard did not look relieved.

“What?”

“He says he remembers the trustee amendment.”

Daniel went still.

“He notarized it?”

“Yes.”

“Did he see me sign?”

Richard listened to the caller.

Then his face drained.

“No.”

Daniel felt cold.

“Who signed it?”

Richard repeated the question into the phone.

Silence.

Then he slowly lowered it.

“Thomas says the document was brought to him already signed.”

“By whom?”

Richard stared at Daniel.

“Anna.”

Daniel felt the room collapse inward.

“No.”

Richard continued.

“He says Anna personally told him the signature was yours and that the amendment had to be processed immediately.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That makes no sense.”

Morris stood before agents pushed him back down.

“Unless she was trying to control where the trust went.”

Daniel turned on him.

“To Vale?”

Morris looked uncertain.

Ruiz asked, “Could Anna have been coerced?”

Daniel thought of the threats against Marianne.

The surveillance.

The trust built around Sophie.

Anything was possible.

Richard held up the phone.

“Thomas says Anna was frightened.”

Daniel stared.

“What else?”

“He says she gave him something after he notarized the document.”

“What?”

“A sealed envelope.”

“Where is it?”

Thomas had kept it for three years.

He told investigators Anna had instructed him not to open it unless Daniel asked about the trust.

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“What does it say?”

Richard listened.

Then looked at him.

“Thomas hasn’t opened it.”

Daniel felt his pulse in his throat.

“Then bring it here.”

Ruiz intervened.

“No. We secure Thomas and the envelope separately.”

Daniel nodded.

Again, discipline.

Again,
