night.

“What?”

“A ledger.”

Daniel frowned.

“What ledger?”

“Arthur called it the red book.”

Daniel had never heard the phrase.

Neither had Richard.

Samuel went silent when Daniel asked him.

Too silent.

“Samuel.”

“I never received it.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Samuel sighed.

“I know what it was.”

Daniel waited.

“Harold kept a handwritten record of off-book early property transactions.”

“Why?”

“Because he suspected Arthur and Robert were manipulating acquisitions.”

“Where is it?”

“I thought Harold destroyed it.”

Vale apparently believed Anna found it.

If the red book survived, it could document the original money flows before Northbridge, before Brightwater, before digital records.

It could prove where the conspiracy began.

Daniel’s phone vibrated.

A message from federal detention.

Arthur had requested an interview.

Not with prosecutors.

With Daniel.

Ruiz immediately said no.

Daniel agreed.

Then she added:

“He says he’ll disclose the location of the red book only to you.”

Daniel stared at the message.

Arthur was handcuffed.

His accounts were being frozen.

Vale was cooperating.

Lauren was in custody.

Yet Arthur still believed one secret could make people come to him.

Daniel looked toward Sophie’s bedroom.

“No.”

Ruiz paused.

“No?”

“If he knows where it is, he tells prosecutors.”

“And if he refuses?”

“Then he can keep his secret in a cell.”

Daniel ended the call.

Ten minutes later Ruiz called back.

Arthur had changed his mind.

He would talk.

Not because Daniel went to him.

Because for the first time in decades, nobody had.

<a
