privately.”

“Did you confirm that?”

“No.”

The answer filled the room with something darker than anger.

Maya sat perfectly still.

For three years, she had thought her father exploited an illness after she recovered.

Now there was a new possibility.

One nobody was yet willing to name as fact.

That some portion of the weakness she remembered might not have come from the original illness at all.

The investigator closed her notebook.

“We need the complete prescribing records.”

Maya looked at her.

“And Dr. Kessler.”

“Yes.”

“And Dad.”

“Yes.”

Barbara whispered, “There's one more thing.”

Maya turned back.

Barbara reached into her handbag.

She removed an envelope.

“I kept this because I didn't understand why Mark wanted it destroyed.”

Inside was a photocopy of a pharmacy printout.

One prescription had been highlighted.

Beside it, in Barbara's handwriting, was a date.

Maya stared at the drug name.

Then at the dosage.

Then at the physician listed as prescriber.

Dr. Kessler.

Barbara whispered, “Three months later, the dose was doubled.”

Maya looked up.

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

At the bottom of the page, another handwritten note appeared.

Not Barbara's.

Mark's.

The words were short.

Keep current dose. Better compliance.

Maya read the line twice.

Then placed the paper flat on the table.

Her voice, when it came, was steady.

“I want every medical record from the beginning.”

The investigator nodded.

“I agree.”

Maya looked at Barbara.

“No more family explanations.”

Then at Sarah.

“No more Dad's version.”

Then at me.

“No more guessing.”

Finally, she looked at the prescription sheet.

“I want to know whether I stayed sick because I was sick.”

Nobody spoke.

Maya touched the note beside the doubled dose.

“Or because someone needed me to be.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Prescription Records Answered One Question About Maya’s Weakness, but Dr. Kessler’s Missing Notes Raised a Far More Dangerous One

Barbara agreed to meet only after the investigator called her directly.
