It was the nurse’s face. When she returned to the examination room, she held her clipboard tight against her chest and had lost the easy smile she had worn while taking Sophie’s blood pressure.

Sophie Morgan sat on the paper-covered examination table, swinging her sneakers and picking at the edge of the bandage in the crook of her arm. At ten, she had already perfected the expression of a child forced to endure an adult’s unnecessary concern. She had missed the final hour of school, including soccer practice, because she had vomited twice that morning and complained that the lights in her classroom hurt her eyes.

“Can we go now?” Sophie asked. “Coach said we’re practicing corners today.”

The nurse glanced at Claire instead of answering. “Mrs. Morgan, Dr. Ortiz would like to talk with you.”

Something in the phrasing made Claire sit straighter. “About the blood work?”

“Yes.”

“Okay. We’re right here.”

The nurse hesitated. “She was hoping to speak with you privately first.”

Sophie stopped swinging her feet. “Why?”

Claire felt the first cold thread of fear slide beneath her ribs. She had expected anemia, dehydration, maybe some stubborn virus. Sophie had been getting headaches for weeks, but children got headaches. She had grown quickly that year, but children grew. Nothing about the afternoon had seemed capable of becoming frightening until the nurse looked unwilling to speak in front of her daughter.

“She can tell me whatever it is with Sophie here,” Claire said.

The nurse nodded and left. She shut the door, pulled the rolling stool close to the examination table, and sat rather than remaining beside the computer. Claire noticed every movement. She noticed the doctor clasping her hands. She noticed that she did not begin by saying the results were reassuring.

“What did you find?” Claire asked.

Dr. Ortiz looked briefly at Sophie. “Before I explain the laboratory result, I need to ask a few questions.”

Claire’s shoulders tightened. “What kind of questions?”

“When was Sophie’s last menstrual period?”

Silence settled over the room.

Sophie frowned. “My what?”

Claire stared at the doctor. “She hasn’t started menstruating. She’s ten.”

“I understand.”

“Then why are you asking?”

Dr. Ortiz continued carefully. Had Sophie experienced any vaginal bleeding? No. Abdominal pain? Nothing beyond an occasional stomachache. Breast tenderness? Claire’s irritation sharpened at that question. Sophie had begun developing earlier than many girls her age, and Claire had already raised the issue during a pediatric appointment six months earlier. The doctor they had seen had called it early but still potentially normal puberty.

“What exactly did you test for?” Claire asked.

Dr. Ortiz took a measured breath. “One of Sophie’s blood samples showed detectable hCG.”

Sophie looked between the adults. The letters meant nothing to her.

They meant enough to Claire.

Her stomach contracted. She had seen those initials on pregnancy tests. Claire answered through clenched teeth: herself, Sophie, and Claire’s husband, Daniel. Sophie’s biological father, Eric Hale, lived three states away and visited during holidays and selected weekends.

Daniel had entered Sophie’s life when she was three. He had learned how she liked her grilled cheese cut, sat beside her through stomach bugs, attended parent-teacher conferences, coached soccer when the regular coach injured his ankle, and once spent half a Saturday learning to braid hair because Sophie had complained that his ponytails hurt.

Somewhere along the way, without anyone instructing her to do it, Sophie had begun calling him Dad.

Dr. Ortiz turned toward Sophie. “Has any adult ever touched you in a way that made you uncomfortable?”

“No.”

“Has anyone asked you to keep a secret about touching?”

“No.”

“Has anyone ever hurt you and told you not to tell your mother?”

Sophie pulled her hand from Claire’s and folded both arms tightly. “No.”

Then, before anybody had named him, she said, “Daniel never did anything.”

Claire felt something inside her drop.

Dr. Ortiz’s expression remained professionally neutral. “I didn’t say Daniel did.”

“But that’s who everybody is going to think about.”

“No,” Claire said. “Nobody is deciding anything.”

Sophie looked at her. “Are they going to think Dad hurt me?”

Claire opened her mouth.

Voices erupted in the corridor before she could answer.

One belonged to Daniel.

The other belonged to Eric.

Claire closed her eyes for half a second.

She had called both men earlier, when she had still believed they were dealing with dehydration or anemia. Daniel had left work immediately. Eric, unexpectedly in town for a business meeting, had driven over as well.

The door opened.

Daniel entered first, still wearing his work clothes, his tie pulled loose. Eric came directly behind him.

“What happened?” Daniel asked.

Eric’s face was pale. “Somebody outside said there was a positive pregnancy test.”

Sophie flinched.

“Eric,” Claire warned.

He ignored her. “Is that true?”

“There was a positive hCG result,” Claire said. “That is not the same thing.”

Eric looked from Claire to Sophie.

Then his eyes landed on Daniel.

“What did you do?”

The room changed.

Daniel stared at him. “What?”

“What did you do to my daughter?”

“Nothing!” Sophie shouted.

Claire moved between the men. “Eric, stop.”

“She lives with him.”

“She lives with me.”

“She is ten!”

Daniel’s confusion disappeared.
