10 – The Search for Subject Eleven Led Back to Sophie’s School, Where One Child Had Already Begun Showing the Same Symptoms

The code S.H.-11 changed the investigation overnight.

Until then, Agent Bell’s team had been reconstructing crimes that had already happened.

Now they might be able to stop one.

The photograph found in the motel contained more than Sophie.

Behind her, dozens of children crossed the school courtyard.

Bell’s analysts enlarged the image.

A small circle had been drawn in blue ink around another student.

A boy walking six feet behind Sophie.

Claire recognized him.

“Noah Patterson.”

Sophie heard from the bed.

“What about Noah?”

Claire turned too slowly.

Sophie sat up.

“Why did you say Noah?”

Agent Bell looked at Claire.

There was no point hiding it.

“We think he may be the next child they were watching.”

Sophie stared at him.

“No.”

“You know him well?”

“He’s annoying.”

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

“You’ve mentioned.”

“He steals everybody’s pencils and says it’s borrowing.”

Claire waited.

Sophie’s irritation vanished.

“He gets headaches.”

The room became silent.

“How do you know?” Dr. Shah asked.

“He goes to the nurse.”

“How often?”

“A lot.”

Claire felt her skin tighten.

“Anything else?”

Sophie thought.

“He got sick on the bus last month.”

Agent Bell was already calling his team.

“Noah’s parents need to be contacted immediately.”

Sophie looked frightened.

“Did they put the thing in him too?”

“We don’t know.”

“If they did, don’t let them wait like with me.”

“We won’t.”

Noah Patterson’s mother, Rachel, initially believed the FBI call was a scam.

Then agents arrived at her home.

Within ninety minutes Noah was at the same hospital.

He complained the entire way.

Sophie heard his voice from down the hall and whispered, “See?”

Daniel smiled.

“Reassuringly annoying.”

Because Sophie’s location remained protected, Noah was evaluated separately.

His blood work revealed elevated hormonal markers.

Not hCG.

Different endocrine abnormalities.

Brain imaging followed.

At 4:20 p.m., Dr. Shah entered Sophie’s room and closed the door.

Claire knew.

“Did they find something?”

“A small lesion.”

Sophie stared.

“In his head?”

“Yes.”

“Kevin’s cousin?”

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

Dr. Shah nearly smiled.

“Something like that.”

Noah’s tumor was much smaller than Sophie’s.

It might have remained unnoticed for months.

Because investigators identified him early, doctors had caught it before significant symptoms developed.

Sophie looked at Claire.

“So my cancer helped find his.”

Claire sat beside her.

“Yes.”

Sophie absorbed that.

“Then at least it did something useful.”

Claire wanted to tell her she did not need to turn suffering into purpose.

Instead she kissed her forehead.

Noah’s parents agreed to genetic testing.

The result showed a hereditary cancer susceptibility variant.

Different from the Hale mutation.

But one included in Samuel’s later research notes.

Subject Eleven.

The pattern was confirmed.

Samuel’s work had expanded into a system for identifying children with inherited vulnerabilities, modifying them, triggering the modification later, then studying the result.

Dr. Shah put the pieces together on a whiteboard.

Infant or childhood vector.

Years of monitoring.

Endocrine activation.

Synthetic trigger.

Tumor development.

Engineered cellular therapy.

Daniel looked at the sequence.

“This entire thing was designed.”

Dr. Shah nodded.

“Parts of it clearly were.”

“To cure inherited cancer?”

“Perhaps originally.”

“And somewhere along the way they started causing disease to prove the treatment worked.”

“That appears increasingly possible.”

Eric stood by the wall.

“My father would call that proof of concept.”

Claire looked at him.

“You say that like you’ve heard him.”

“I have.”

“When?”

“When I was fourteen.”

The room quieted.

Eric stared at the board.

Samuel once developed an experimental therapy in mice.

It appeared to prevent a specific tumor.

The animals remained healthy.

Eric remembered asking whether that meant the experiment was successful.

Samuel said no.

Not until they deliberately induced the cancer and watched the treatment defeat it.

“He told me prevention without challenge proves nothing.”

Dr. Shah frowned.

“In controlled animal research, challenge studies can have scientific rationale.”

Eric nodded.

“But he was talking about people by the time I was sixteen.”

Claire felt cold.

“So Sophie was the challenge.”

“Maybe.”

Sophie looked at the board.

“And now the cells are supposed to beat it.”

No one liked hearing a ten-year-old summarize her own exploitation so accurately.

The engineered cells recovered from NorthStar became the center of an urgent ethical debate.

They might save Sophie.

They might also carry risks nobody understood.

The cells had been developed illegally.

Their manufacturing process was undocumented.

Their safety was unknown.

But early laboratory testing showed extraordinary activity against Sophie’s tumor cells.

Dr. Shah explained this cautiously.

“In the dish, they attack cells expressing the synthetic receptor very efficiently.”

“How efficiently?” Daniel asked.

“More than ninety percent.”

Claire stared.

“That sounds good.”

“It is encouraging.”

“But?”

“There is always a but.”

Shah nodded.

“We don’t know what healthy cells may also express the receptor.”

If Sophie’s normal tissues carried it, the engineered immune cells could attack them too.

Liver.

Endocrine organs.

Brain tissue.

Potentially anything altered by Samuel’s original vector.

Daniel looked toward Sophie.

“So the treatment could attack her.”

“Yes.”

Claire’s hope collapsed back into fear.

“What would Samuel know?”

“Possibly a great deal.”

Agent Bell entered at that moment.

“We may have a chance to ask him.”

Everyone turned.

Samuel had contacted the FBI.

Not through a phone.

Through an encrypted message sent directly to Bell.

He offered to surrender under conditions.

Eric laughed bitterly.

“Of course he has conditions.”

“What are they?” Claire asked.

Samuel wanted immunity from prosecution for his original research.

Bell shook his head.

“He is not getting that.”

“What else?”

“He wants the cellular therapy transferred to a neutral research hospital.”

Dr. Shah frowned.

“Why?”

“He says NorthStar will try to destroy it.”

“And his third condition?” Eric asked.

Bell looked at him.

“To see Sophie.”

“No.”

Claire’s answer came immediately.

Sophie looked at her.

“Mom.”

“No.”

“I didn’t say yes.”

“You were going to.”

“I was going to ask why.”

Bell answered.

“Samuel claims Sophie needs to hear something directly from him.”

Claire laughed.

“He had ten years.”

Eric stepped closer.

“Where is he?”

“We don’t know.”

“Then he isn’t surrendering.”

“He gave us a meeting protocol.”

“What does he want me to do?”

Bell looked at Eric.

“He does not want you involved.”

That surprised everyone.

Eric’s mouth tightened.

“Why?”

“He specifically said you would compromise the exchange.”

Daniel folded his arms.

“That sounds designed to make Eric insist on being involved.”

Eric nodded.

“My father understands manipulation.”

Bell agreed.

“So do we.”

The FBI accepted the meeting in principle while refusing immunity.

Samuel sent coordinates.

An abandoned church outside the city.

Meeting time: midnight.

Bell’s team prepared surveillance.

Samuel changed the location twenty minutes before the scheduled meeting.

Then again.

Then a third time.

“He’s checking for tails,” Bell said.

At 1:07 a.m., Samuel finally appeared at a closed railway depot.

Unarmed.

Alone.

Agents surrounded him.

This time he surrendered without resistance.

By dawn, he was in federal custody again.

Bell called Claire.

“He wants to talk.”

“Then ask him.”

“He says he will only discuss the cellular therapy with you present.”

Claire looked at Sophie.

She was sleeping.

Daniel whispered, “You don’t owe him anything.”

“I know.”

Eric stood near the window.

“Go.”

Claire looked at him.

“You want me to?”

“My father respects very few people.”

“He doesn’t respect me.”

“No.”

Eric’s expression was grim.

“But he is afraid you won’t let him control the outcome.”

That was enough.

Claire agreed.

The interview occurred in a federal conference room attached to the hospital because Samuel claimed time mattered.

He sat handcuffed at the table.

For the first time, Claire saw him clearly without glass between them.

He looked tired.

Not frail.

Not defeated.

His eyes remained sharp.

“You shaved her head,” he said.

Claire sat opposite him.

“Chemotherapy did that.”

“You could have preserved more of it if the regimen—”

“Do not speak about her hair like you were entitled to a vote.”

Samuel stopped.

Agent Bell activated the recorder.

Claire placed photographs of Maya and Sophie on the table.

“Tell me why you did this.”

Samuel looked at Maya’s photograph first.

“I believed I could remove a hereditary death sentence.”

“You experimented on children.”

“I developed a preventive genetic therapy.”

“Without consent.”

“Initially within my family.”

Claire stared at him.

“You think blood relation made Maya your property?”

“No.”

“You behaved as if it did.”

His jaw tightened.

Claire continued.

“You treated Maya.”

“Yes.”

“She developed cancer.”

“Yes.”

“You delayed conventional care.”

Samuel looked away.

“That was a mistake.”

Claire almost stood.

“A mistake is giving the wrong dose of cough medicine.”

“I know what I did.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

For the first time, something in his face looked old.

Not remorse exactly.

Recognition.

“Maya died because I valued data when I should have valued time.”

Claire did not comfort him.

“And then you used Sophie.”

“I corrected the vector.”

“You injected her when she was six weeks old.”

“Yes.”

“Without my permission.”

“Yes.”

“You monitored her.”

“Yes.”

“You let Vale examine her under a dead doctor’s identity.”

“No.”

Claire paused.

Samuel looked at Bell.

“Vale was not working for me by then.”

“Who was he working for?”

“NorthStar.”

“Who ran the program?”

“Leonard Price.”

Eric had named him.

NorthStar’s chief executive.

Samuel explained that after Maya’s death, he halted human use of the vector.

NorthStar had already funded parts of the research.

They owned infrastructure.

Samples.

Data copies.

Samuel believed they had stopped too.

They had not.

“They wanted a commercial platform,” he said.

“For what?”

“Hereditary cancer prevention followed by receptor-targeted immune rescue.”

Claire stared.

“Say it like a human being.”

Samuel’s face tightened.

“They wanted to alter high-risk children so if cancer developed later, it could be destroyed using engineered immune cells.”

“That sounds almost reasonable.”

“It could have been.”

“Until they started triggering the cancer.”

Samuel looked at her.

“Yes.”

Bell leaned forward.

“Who authorized SV-2A?”

“Price.”

“And Vale?”

“Executed the pediatric program.”

“Vane?”

“Protected it.”

Claire pointed toward Samuel.

“And you?”

He did not answer.

“You started it.”

“Yes.”

“You created the thing they turned into this.”

“Yes.”

“Then do not sit there acting like the good scientist surrounded by villains.”

Samuel’s eyes dropped.

Claire leaned closer.

“Tell me how to save Sophie.”

That made him look up.

“The cellular therapy can work.”

“Can?”

“If it is the batch derived from her cells six years ago.”

Claire’s blood chilled.

“Six years?”

“Yes.”

“She was four.”

“Samples were collected.”

“Without us knowing.”

“Yes.”

Samuel continued.

The cells had been engineered gradually as Sophie’s receptor profile developed.

NorthStar had maintained them frozen.

SV-2A forced receptor expression.

The tumors were the intended proof that the system could be targeted.

“How do we know the treatment won’t attack healthy tissue?”

Samuel answered immediately.

“You don’t.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“But there is a control switch.”

Dr. Shah,
