vanished before anyone understood how large his role truly was.

Now Leonard Price’s final coherent words turned him from missing researcher into an immediate threat.

Vale has the children.

Agent Bell returned to Facility 17’s active-subject list.

Twenty-three profiles.

Sophie had been monitored remotely.

Noah was at the hospital.

That left twenty-one.

Some might be living ordinary lives without knowing anything about the experiment.

Others might already be under Vale’s control.

Federal teams began locating families.

By afternoon they had contacted fourteen.

Three addresses were empty.

Two families had recently moved without forwarding information.

Four parents described unusual medical outreach during the past year.

Claire listened as Bell summarized it.

Fake specialists.

Free screening programs.

Research invitations disguised as charitable medicine.

The same machinery that had reached Sophie.

“Where would Vale take them?” Eric asked.

Samuel sat under guard in a nearby conference room.

Bell had finally allowed him to participate because time mattered more than pride.

Samuel studied the list.

“These ages.”

“What about them?”

“Most are between nine and thirteen.”

Dr. Shah understood.

“Puberty.”

Samuel nodded.

“The activation window.”

Claire felt sick.

“They’re ready.”

“Possibly.”

“For what Sophie went through.”

“Yes.”

Samuel pointed to the children’s geographic distribution.

They clustered around three regions.

Each region once contained a NorthStar-affiliated medical facility.

One had closed.

One had burned down.

The third remained operational under a different company name.

Cedar Ridge Endocrine Research Center.

Agent Bell searched it.

Legitimate licensing.

Active clinical trials.

No obvious connection to Vale.

Eric recognized a board member.

“Leonard Price.”

Bell’s mouth tightened.

“There it is.”

Cedar Ridge lay in Pennsylvania.

Federal agents obtained an emergency warrant.

They arrived after dark.

The public portion of the building was nearly empty.

The basement was not.

Bell called Claire shortly after midnight.

“We found patients.”

Her hand tightened around the phone.

“Children?”

“Seven.”

Alive.

Sedated.

None in immediate danger.

But each had undergone procedures.

Blood collection.

Marrow sampling.

Hormone stimulation tests.

Two had surgical ports implanted.

Nathan Vale was not there.

Neither were the other missing subjects.

“Did the children know what was happening?”

“Some were told they were enrolled in treatment programs.”

“By their parents?”

“In several cases, forged consent appears likely.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Seven rescued.

Others missing.

The scale continued to widen.

Sophie asked for numbers.

“How many did they find?”

Claire told her.

“How many still missing?”

“Fourteen active subjects aren’t fully accounted for.”

Sophie stared at her blanket.

“That’s a lot.”

“Yes.”

“I thought I was the experiment.”

Claire sat beside her.

“You were one of them.”

Sophie nodded.

“I don’t know if that makes me feel better or worse.”

“It doesn’t have to do either.”

Sophie looked at her mother.

“I want Noah to know.”

“Know what?”

“That he isn’t the only one either.”

Claire understood.

Isolation had become another weapon of the experiment.

Every child had been studied separately.

Kept unaware.

Turned into numbered subjects.

Knowledge of one another was the first thing that made them people again.

The medical question became more urgent.

Abigail’s marrow sample arrived under federal escort.

Dr. Shah’s laboratory compared it with Sophie’s tumor, blood, and healthy tissue.

Hours of testing produced the clearest answer yet.

The engineered immune cells could target Sophie’s tumor.

They could potentially eliminate it.

The synthetic receptor appeared mostly absent from her healthy cells at baseline.

But Price’s warning was confirmed.

Under certain inflammatory signals, normal tissues began producing low levels.

“How low?” Claire asked.

“Low enough that we may have a therapeutic window.”

“May.”

“Yes.”

“And Abigail?”

“Her records suggest exactly that happened. The cells destroyed the tumor first. Then systemic inflammation pushed healthy tissue into the danger zone.”

“So you stop the treatment at that moment.”

“If we recognize it.”

Daniel frowned.

“How?”

Dr. Shah listed markers.

Certain cytokine levels.

Liver enzymes.

Neurological signs.

Temperature.

Blood pressure.

Receptor-expression signals measured from circulating cells.

Claire stared at the page.

“That sounds like trying to stop a train one foot before a cliff.”

Dr. Shah did not disagree.

Abigail joined the conversation by video.

Her dark hair was tied behind her head.

She looked nineteen despite being only fifteen.

Claire recognized the expression.

Children who had spent too much time around frightened adults learned stillness early.

Sophie sat forward.

“Hi.”

Abigail smiled.

“Hi.”

“Did it hurt?”

“Yes.”

Claire flinched at the directness.

Abigail did not soften it.

“The treatment made me really sick for a while.”

“Were you scared?”

“Terrified.”

“Did you think you were going to die?”

“Yes.”

Sophie nodded.

“Me too.”

The two girls looked at each other through the screen.

Adults became irrelevant for several seconds.

Sophie asked, “Was it worth it?”

Abigail considered.

“I’m alive.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Claire looked at her daughter.

Abigail smiled sadly.

“No. What they did to me wasn’t worth it.”

Sophie relaxed slightly.

“But the treatment?”

“That part saved me.”

The distinction mattered.

The science could work without making the experiment acceptable.

Sophie seemed to understand that better than many adults.

Dr. Shah explained Sophie’s options.

Continue modified conventional chemotherapy.

It might cure the tumors.

It might not, particularly because of the engineered survival pathway.

Add radiation.

Effective but carrying long-term risks in a ten-year-old brain.

Surgery for the pineal lesion.

Technically possible but dangerous because of location.

Or attempt the engineered immune-cell therapy with the safety switch and intensive monitoring.

Claire asked the question nobody wanted.

“What would you do if she were your daughter?”

Dr. Shah looked at Sophie.

“I would not make that decision based on one doctor’s instinct.”

Claire almost objected.

Then Shah continued.

“I would gather every expert I trust and make the best decision with her family.”

That evening, specialists from four hospitals joined remotely.

Pediatric oncology.

Neurosurgery.

Immunotherapy.

Gene therapy.

Bioethics.

The debate lasted more than two hours.

Nobody called the experimental cellular therapy safe.

Several called it scientifically plausible.

One argued strongly against using cells created through an illegal program.

Another responded that their unethical origin did not make them biologically useless.

A bioethicist drew a sharp line.

“You are not continuing the experiment. You are treating the harm it produced.”

Claire held onto that sentence.

They were not finishing NorthStar’s protocol.

They were taking a weapon built against Sophie and turning it toward the cancer.

Sophie listened for part of the meeting.

Then raised her hand.

Everyone stopped.

“I have a question.”

Dr. Shah smiled.

“Go ahead.”

“If you do the regular chemo and it doesn’t work, can I still do the cell thing later?”

“Possibly, but tumor progression could make it harder.”

“If we do the cell thing and it goes bad, can you stop it?”

“We believe so.”

“Because of the switch.”

“Yes.”

“And Abigail had the switch.”

“Yes.”

“And she lived.”

“Yes.”

Sophie looked at Claire.

“I want that one.”

Claire felt her throat tighten.

“You don’t have to decide right now.”

“I know.”

“You can be scared.”

“I am.”

Daniel took her hand.

Sophie looked at him.

“I don’t want Kevin in my head anymore.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“We don’t either.”

The final decision was not made that night.

More consent forms.

More tests.

More outside review.

Everything Samuel had ignored had to be done correctly now.

Meanwhile, the search for Vale accelerated.

At Cedar Ridge, agents recovered video files.

Nathan Vale appeared on camera forty-eight hours earlier.

He spoke to seven children in a treatment room.

His words were recorded.

“You were chosen because your bodies can teach us how to prevent disease for everyone after you.”

Bell showed only the adults.

Claire heard enough.

Vale spoke with calm certainty.

He did not sound cruel.

That frightened her more.

He sounded like a teacher explaining homework.

One child asked if the treatment would hurt.

Vale answered, “Important things sometimes do.”

Daniel shut the video off.

“Find him.”

Bell nodded.

Agents also found transportation manifests.

A refrigerated medical vehicle had left Cedar Ridge with five pediatric subjects two days earlier.

Destination field blank.

GPS disabled.

Toll cameras traced the vehicle south.

Then it disappeared.

Samuel studied the route.

“He’s heading toward the original lab.”

Bell looked at him.

“Facility 17?”

“No.”

Samuel’s voice changed.

“The one before NorthStar.”

“Where?”

“A university research annex.”

“Which university?”

Samuel looked ashamed.

“Mine.”

The annex had officially closed sixteen years earlier after a contamination incident.

The main building was demolished.

One underground section remained sealed.

Samuel claimed he had not been there in more than a decade.

Bell asked why Vale would go there.

“Because the first vector-production equipment is still beneath it.”

Eric stared at his father.

“You left equipment?”

“It was decommissioned.”

“You keep using words that turn out not to mean anything.”

Samuel accepted the criticism.

Federal teams were deployed.

The underground annex entrance had been welded closed.

Not recently.

A secondary service tunnel had been reopened.

Agents entered.

Inside they found power.

Fresh medical supplies.

Five empty pediatric beds.

No children.

No Vale.

But there was evidence they had been there hours earlier.

Food trays.

Disposable electrodes.

Medication packaging.

A child’s yellow sock on the floor.

Claire stared at the photograph Bell sent.

She imagined a parent somewhere recognizing it.

Sophie saw Claire’s expression.

“They missed them?”

“Yes.”

“Again?”

“Yes.”

Sophie sighed.

“Agent Bell is having a rough week.”

Claire laughed despite herself.

Bell, on speakerphone, said, “I heard that.”

“Good,” Sophie replied.

The agents found something else in the annex.

A wall-sized planning board.

Vale’s version of the program.

Unlike Samuel’s clinical notes or NorthStar’s commercial documents, Vale’s writing focused on one concept.

Induced immunity.

Dr. Shah studied photographs.

“He isn’t trying to treat individual cancer.”

“What is he trying to do?” Claire asked.

“Create a transferable immune response.”

Samuel went still.

“No.”

“What?”

“He thinks the successful subjects can be used as donors.”

Abigail.

Sophie.

Children whose immune systems had been engineered to recognize the synthetic receptor.

Vale may have believed their cells could be adapted into an off-the-shelf therapy for other patients.

Daniel frowned.

“That sounds like something medicine already does.”

“Donor-derived cellular therapies exist,” Shah said. “But not like this.”

Vale was attempting to transform an individualized experimental system into something broadly transferable.

If successful, it could be valuable.

If rushed, it could be catastrophic.

“And the missing children?” Claire asked.

“Potential donor candidates. Recipients. Or both.”

Sophie’s face tightened.

“So he needs me too?”

Samuel answered.

“Yes.”

Claire glared at him.

“You do not get to answer her.”

He lowered his eyes.

Sophie looked at Dr. Shah.

“Does Vale need me?”

“Your cells and data may be especially important to his work.”

“Because I’m ten?”

“Because you received a later version of the vector.”

Sophie considered this.

“So he might come here.”

Daniel immediately looked toward Bell.

Security was doubled.

Then tripled.

Sophie was moved again.

This time the room did not display even an alias outside.

Only a numeric code.

Daniel inspected every person who entered.

Sophie complained that he was becoming “airport security.”

He accepted the insult.

The next morning, the treatment committee reached a decision.

They would offer Sophie the controlled engineered-cell therapy.

Under emergency compassionate-use authorization.

Independent manufacturing verification.

Continuous intensive-care monitoring.

The suicide-switch medication at bedside.

Claire signed only after reading every page.

Daniel signed as witness.

Eric stood outside the room.

Sophie signed her own assent in careful handwriting.

Then drew a tiny dragon beside her name.

Dr. Shah smiled.

“Official?”

“Very.”

The infusion was scheduled for the following morning.

That night Sophie could not sleep.

Claire climbed into the narrow hospital bed beside her.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“What if it doesn’t work?”

“Then we keep going.”

“What if I die?”

Claire’s breath caught.

She refused to lie.

“I will be with you for every second I can.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

“I know.”

Sophie looked at the dark ceiling.

“Maya died.”

“Yes.”

“Abigail almost died.”

“Yes.”

“So I could.”

“Yes.”

Sophie was silent.

Then she whispered, “I still want to do it.”

Claire kissed her forehead.

“I know.”

At 4:17 a.m., a nurse entered.

Not the regular night nurse.

A man Claire had never seen.

He wore hospital scrubs and carried a medication syringe.

Claire sat up immediately.

“Who are you?”

The man froze.

Daniel woke in the chair.

The nurse looked toward the door.

Then ran.

Daniel shouted.

Security alarms erupted.

Hospital officers caught the man two corridors away.

His identification was false.

The syringe contained no sedative.

No pain medication.

It contained a concentrated inflammatory agent.

Dr. Shah examined the analysis.

Her face went pale.

“What would that do?”

Claire already knew she would hate the answer.

Shah looked toward Sophie.

“It would force widespread receptor expression.”

Daniel stared.

“Meaning?”

“If Sophie received the engineered cells afterward…”

“They would attack everything.”

“Yes.”

Claire gripped the bedrail.

“Vale.”

Bell arrived.

The detained man initially refused to speak.

Then investigators showed him Nathan Vale’s photograph.

He broke.

Vale had hired him.

Not to kill Sophie.

To prepare her.

The inflammatory injection was supposed to be administered hours before the cellular therapy.

Claire felt rage become cold and focused.

Vale knew the treatment schedule.

He knew the hospital.

He knew where Sophie had been moved.

Someone was still feeding him information.

Bell shut down the entire access list.

Only five people knew the new room.

Claire.

Daniel.

Eric.

Dr. Shah.

Agent Bell.

One of them, or someone monitoring one of them, had leaked Sophie’s location.

Sophie stared at the adults.

“Which one of you told him?”

No one answered.

Then Eric’s phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

One sentence.

You were always the easiest one to follow.

Attached was a photograph taken less than an hour earlier.

Eric standing outside Sophie’s new room.

Claire looked at him.

“You were followed.”

Eric’s face went white.

Not physically.

Digitally.

His phone.

His device had been compromised.

Bell took it immediately.

A forensic scan found hidden tracking software.

Installed months earlier.

Before Sophie’s diagnosis.

Eric stared at the screen.

“NorthStar.”

Bell nodded.

“Or Vale.”

Claire looked through the glass at Sophie.

The breach had been found.

The injected trigger had been stopped.

But the treatment scheduled for morning could no longer proceed as planned.

Someone outside the hospital knew exactly what they intended to do.

And Nathan Vale had already demonstrated that he could reach Sophie before they reached him.
