returned to school for a full day, Claire woke before the alarm.

She lay in the dark listening.

No monitor alarms.

No nurse footsteps.

No ventilation hum.

Only Daniel breathing beside her and the faint sound of pipes warming inside the wall.

For almost a minute, Claire did not know what had awakened her.

Then she remembered.

School.

A normal word had become something enormous.

She slipped out of bed and went downstairs.

Sophie was already sitting at the kitchen table in information.”

“It contains my entire autobiography.”

“It contains instructions in case—”

“I know.”

Daniel hesitated.

Then removed three unnecessary pages.

“Compromise.”

Sophie looked unconvinced.

Eric arrived at 7:15 because Sophie had asked him to.

Not to drive her.

Not to come inside school.

Just to be there before she left.

He stood near the counter holding a paper bag.

“I brought muffins.”

Daniel looked inside.

“These are from the bakery.”

Eric nodded.

“You said you brought muffins.”

“I transported muffins.”

Sophie laughed.

Claire watched the three of them and felt the shape of their family settling into something unfamiliar but workable.

Not repaired.

Rearranged.

Sophie ate half a blueberry muffin.

Then she went upstairs and changed.

When she came back down, she wore jeans, sneakers, and a purple knit cap.

No wig.

No attempt to hide her still-short hair beneath it.

Claire pretended not to notice the importance of the choice.

Daniel did not.

“You terrible.”

“Better.”

The school had arranged a side entrance to avoid cameras.

A security officer stood near the gate.

The district had temporarily banned non-parent media from the property.

Still, two news vans waited across the street.

Sophie saw them.

Her shoulders rose.

Claire reached for her hand.

Sophie pulled away.

Not angrily.

Just deliberately.

“I can walk.”

Claire let her.

Mia waited inside the gate.

The second rude.”

“You missed me.”

“Unfortunately.”

They walked toward the building.

Claire stood outside until Sophie disappeared.

Daniel touched her shoulder.

“You have to leave.”

“I know.”

“You’re not leaving.”

“I know.”

“Claire.”

She looked at him.

“I know.”

She finally turned toward the car.

The first hour was worse for Claire than for Sophie.

Claire checked her phone every three minutes.

Daniel confiscated it.

“You cannot do this all day.”

“Give it tried.

At school, Sophie entered math class and discovered everyone had decided not to stare.

That was almost worse than staring.

Nobody looked directly at her head.

Nobody mentioned the hospital.

Nobody mentioned the news.

Noah’s desk remained empty.

He was still doing remote classes while receiving treatment.

The silence became ridiculous.

Finally Sophie dropped her pencil.

When Noah's best friend Liam picked it up, she said, “You can ask.”

He froze.

“Ask what?”

“Whatever everybody is pretending not to ask.”

Three nearby students turned.

Liam looked embarrassed.

“Did the treatment hurt?”

“Yes.”

Another student asked, “Did you really have two tumors?”

“Yes.”

“Did scientists actually change your weird.”

“They were weird before.”

“True.”

Mia peeled an orange.

“My mom says I’m not supposed to ask about the laughed.

For twenty minutes Sophie forgot anyone outside the cafeteria knew her name.

Then a seventh-grader approached.

“Are you the girl from the gene scandal?”

Mia stood.

Sophie pulled her back down.

“Yes.”

The boy held out his phone.

“My dad says your doctors created a cure for left.

Sophie sat very still.

Mia whispered, “Want me to throw the orange?”

“No.”

“Offer stands.”

Sophie smiled despite herself.

By three o’clock she was exhausted.

Not sick.

Exhausted.

The distinction mattered.

Claire picked her up.

“How was it?”

“Fine.”

“Fine good or fine terrible?”

“Fine tired.”

Claire nodded.

No interrogation.

Sophie appreciated that enough to tell her more five minutes later.

By the time they reached home, she had described the questions, the staring, Mia’s orange threat, and a surprise quiz she considered morally unacceptable after cancer.

Daniel listened from the kitchen.

“Did you use cancer as an excuse?”

“No.”

“Would have worked.”

“I know.”

The phone rang.

Claire saw Dr. Shah’s name.

Her body reacted before her mind did.

Heart racing.

Hands cold.

She answered.

“Is something wrong?”

A pause.

“No medical emergency.”

Claire sat.

Daniel saw her face and moved closer.

“What happened?”

Dr. Shah explained that a national laboratory monitoring system had flagged a new test associated with Sophie Morgan.

Claire frowned.

“What test?”

“A tumor-marker panel.”

“She had blood drawn Friday.”

“This was not ours.”

Claire felt cold.

“Where?”

“A private laboratory in Ohio.”

Daniel stopped moving.

“Ohio?”

Dr. Shah continued.

The test order included Sophie’s full name.

Birth date.

Previous diagnosis.

Vector status.

Insurance information.

Claire stood.

“She’s never been in Ohio.”

“I know.”

“Then somebody used her identity.”

“Yes.”

“Vale?”

“Unknown.”

Agent Bell called seven minutes later.

The Ohio laboratory had received a blood sample labeled with Sophie’s identifying information.

But the blood was not hers.

Preliminary typing showed a different blood group.

Male.

Likely adolescent.

Claire stared at the phone.

“Why label someone else’s blood as Sophie’s?”

Bell had the same question.

The order requested specialized receptor-expression testing identical to assays used during Sophie’s treatment.

Eric arrived twenty minutes later.

When Bell explained, his expression changed.

“Someone is using her as a reference profile.”

Dr. Shah nodded.

“That’s possible.”

Daniel folded his arms.

“Reference for what?”

“If they have another subject with a related vector, Sophie’s clinical profile could be used as a template.”

Claire looked toward the living room.

Sophie had heard.

She came closer.

“They’re doing it again.”

Nobody answered.

Her face hardened.

“After everything?”

Bell crouched slightly so he was not towering over her.

“We don’t know yet what the sample means.”

“But somebody wrote my name on it.”

“Yes.”

“So they knew.”

“Yes.”

Sophie crossed her arms.

“Find them.”

The Ohio laboratory provided security footage.

The sample had been delivered by medical courier.

Paperwork originated from a pediatric clinic in West Virginia.

The clinic existed.

Its physician existed.

Its patient records were legitimate.

But the doctor denied ordering the test.

His electronic account had been compromised.

The male blood sample corresponded to one of his actual patients.

A twelve-year-old named Owen Brooks.

No relation to Abigail’s cover identity.

Owen had been seen for persistent headaches and rapid growth.

Claire closed her eyes.

“Same symptoms.”

Dr. Shah looked troubled.

“Some overlap.”

Bell’s agents contacted Owen’s parents.

They were confused.

Then frightened.

Owen had recently attended a free specialty evaluation advertised through an online childhood-health foundation.

Eric asked the name.

Bell read it.

FutureWell Pediatric Genetics.

Samuel, informed from custody, recognized nothing.

Price did.

“That is new.”

NorthStar did not own it.

Vale’s shell companies did not obviously fund it.

Its registration dated only six weeks earlier.

After the NorthStar scandal became public.

Daniel stared.

“Someone copied the model.”

Bell nodded.

“That is now a serious possibility.”

The exposure had not ended the methodology.

It may have taught someone else how to reproduce it.

Sophie sat down slowly.

“My story taught them?”

“No,” Claire said immediately.

“The leaked files may have.”

“That’s because of me.”

“No.”

Sophie looked angry.

“They used my name.”

Claire sat beside her.

“That does not make their choices yours.”

Sophie looked away.

Claire refused to push.

Bell’s team traced FutureWell.

The organization had a polished website.

Medical advisory board.

Donation portal.

Parent testimonials.

No real office.

The listed doctors either did not exist or had stolen identities.

Three social-media accounts promoted free screenings for children with unusual growth patterns, headaches, endocrine problems, or family cancer histories.

Dr. Shah read the list.

“They’re selecting.”

Eric nodded.

“The same way NorthStar did.”

Bell’s investigators identified forty-two families who had submitted medical forms through the website.

Eleven mailed saliva samples.

Four completed blood draws at temporary screening events.

Owen was one.

Claire felt sick.

“How long before we know whether someone gave these children anything?”

“Immediately if families agree to evaluation,” Shah said.

The hospital network established an emergency screening pathway.

Parents were contacted.

Public-health officials became involved.

Bell asked Claire whether the family wanted to issue a statement warning others.

Claire looked at Sophie.

“This is your name now.”

Sophie stared at the table.

“Do I have to?”

“No.”

“Would it help?”

“Probably.”

She thought for nearly a minute.

Then asked for paper.

Claire gave it to her.

Sophie wrote slowly.

Not a speech.

Not a public-relations statement.

Six sentences.

Claire read them.

Sophie crossed one out.

Rewrote another.

Then handed the page to Bell.

“I don’t want video.”

“Okay.”

“I don’t want reporters.”

“Okay.”

“Just put the words.”

Bell nodded.

The statement went out through the FBI and hospital.

Sophie said families should verify any medical screening before sending samples.

She said children had the right to know what was being done to them.

She said nobody had permission to use her name to convince another child to participate.

The final sentence was hers alone.

Being scared of disease does not make it okay to scare kids into being experiments.

Within hours, the warning spread more widely than Vale’s manifesto.

Not because Sophie was famous.

Because parents recognized the simplicity of it.

Calls poured into investigators.

FutureWell disappeared from the internet.

Its payment processors froze accounts.

But Bell knew the people behind it would move.

“They built it to vanish.”

Eric stared at the copied website screenshots.

“This is not random.”

“What do you see?” Daniel asked.

“The intake structure.”

It mirrored NorthStar’s old pediatric selection questionnaires.

Not word-for-word.

The logic.

Family cancer history.

Puberty timing.

Neurological symptoms.

Medication response.

Someone had access to internal screening methods not included in the public leak.

Bell leaned closer.

“Who would have that?”

Price.

Vale.

Grant.

Samuel.

Several NorthStar researchers.

Dozens of compliance and medical employees.

The suspect pool was no longer small.

Then Bell’s analyst found something.

FutureWell’s questionnaires contained an internal coding sequence.

One identifier appeared beside every high-risk child.

R-47.

Price recognized it immediately.

“Reclamation.”

Bell frowned.

“What is Reclamation?”

Price looked away.

A NorthStar contingency program.

Designed after regulators began asking questions.

If the primary research collapsed, valuable biological assets and high-priority subjects would be transferred to independent partner networks.

Claire stared.

“You had an escape plan for experiments.”

Price did not defend himself.

“Who ran it?”

He gave a name.

Dr. Miriam Cross.

Claire had never heard it.

Eric had.

His face changed.

“She ran NorthStar bioethics.”

Daniel stared.

“The ethics person?”

Eric laughed once, disgusted.

“Apparently.”

Price corrected him.

“She was vice president of clinical governance.”

“She signed off on complaints.”

“Yes.”

“My complaints.”

“Yes.”

Eric stood.

“She buried them.”

Price said nothing.

Bell requested Cross’s location.

NorthStar records showed she resigned the morning the scandal became public.

Her home was empty.

Bank accounts largely untouched.

Passport used two days earlier.

Not abroad.

A domestic flight.

To Ohio.

Claire looked at Sophie's fraudulent test report.

There it was.

A woman whose job had been to prevent unethical research had become custodian of the contingency built to preserve it.

Sophie listened.

“So the ethics person is bad.”

Daniel sighed.

“It would appear so.”

“That is extremely annoying.”

“Yes.”

Bell's team tracked Cross's rental car.

It had been returned near Columbus.

Inside they found nothing except a receipt.

A children’s hospital parking garage.

Security footage showed Cross entering the hospital.

Then leaving three hours later wearing different clothes.

During those three hours, Owen Brooks’s mislabeled blood sample entered the laboratory network.

Bell looked at Claire.

“She was testing whether Sophie’s identity still opened doors.”

“What do you mean?”

The name Sophie Morgan now triggered immediate attention.

Researchers prioritized associated samples.

Laboratories expedited unusual assays.

Cross had exploited that.

Sophie’s fame had become access.

Claire felt furious.

“She turned Sophie into a password.”

Bell nodded.

“Essentially.”

FutureWell was not yet a full replacement for NorthStar.

It was a probe.

A test of which systems remained vulnerable.

Which researchers would process unusual samples.

Which families might cooperate.

Which children fit the old criteria.

And whether Sophie’s identity could still move material quickly through medical channels.

Cross was rebuilding.

Not from scratch.

From the wreckage.

Sophie stared at the forged report.

“Can she make another Kevin?”

Dr. Shah answered carefully.

“Not easily.”

“But can she?”

“With enough access to the old vectors and activators, potentially.”

“Does she have them?”

Nobody knew.

Bell did not lie.

“We’re finding out.”

That evening, federal agents searched a rented storage unit linked to FutureWell.

Inside were portable centrifuges.

Blood-draw kits.

Freezer boxes.

Consent forms.

And five sealed vials.

Dr. Shah received photographs.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

The labels contained old NorthStar vector codes.

Not SV-2.

Earlier variants.

Samuel identified them.

“Those should have been destroyed.”

Price looked sick.

“They were.”

“Clearly not.”

One vial carried a newer label.

R-47A.

Cross had not simply preserved NorthStar’s remnants.

She had started modifying them.

Claire looked toward Sophie.

Sophie was watching too.

Her face showed no fear now.

Only anger.

“Agent Bell.”

“Yes?”

“Find her before another kid gets a number.”

Bell nodded.

“We will.”

Later that night, Claire found Sophie sitting on her bedroom floor.

Her school backpack lay open.

Textbooks stacked beside her.

“What are you doing?”

“Homework.”

“At eleven?”

“I’m behind.”

Claire sat down.

“You had cancer.”

“That’s not on the grading rubric.”

“Maybe it should be.”

Sophie smiled slightly.

Then her expression changed.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Do you think this keeps happening because people know it worked on me?”

Claire chose her words carefully.

“I think some people see the successful treatment and ignore everything that was done to you to get there.”

“Because the ending looks good.”

“Yes.”

Sophie looked at her science book.

“But it wasn’t good.”

“No.”

“Parts were.”

“Yes.”

“The cells helped.”

“Yes.”

“Eric’s blood helped.”

“Yes.”

“Abigail helped.”

“Yes.”

“So how do people know what part they’re allowed to use?”

Claire thought about Bell’s comment regarding new research rules.

“You separate knowledge from permission.”

Sophie frowned.

“That sounds like adult language.”

Claire smiled.

“It means you can learn from what happened without repeating how it happened.”

Sophie considered.

“Use the answer. Don’t repeat the cheating.”

“Exactly.”

She nodded.

Then returned to homework.

Claire watched her solve fractions.

Outside that room, federal agents were searching for Dr. Miriam Cross.

Scientists were rebuilding ethical protocols.

Families were being contacted.

Labs were checking old samples.

But Sophie was doing math.

That mattered too.

At 12:08 a.m., Bell called.

Cross had been found.

Not arrested.

Found on security footage entering a train station.

She boarded westbound under an alias.

Destination unknown.

Bell’s analysts tracked one purchased connection.

Colorado.

Eric reacted immediately.

“Why Colorado?”

Samuel did too.

“There was a NorthStar archive there.”

Price closed his eyes.

The old facility had been officially cleared years earlier.

According to Price, no active material remained.

According to Samuel, that statement meant nothing.

Bell’s team headed west.

Claire stood in the kitchen after ending the call.

Daniel came beside her.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Same.”

Claire looked toward Sophie’s room.

“She got one normal school day.”

Daniel nodded.

“Most of one.”

Then he took her hand.

“We’ll get more.”

Claire wanted to believe him.

This time she almost could.

Click here to continue reading: PART 22: Cross Reached NorthStar’s Forgotten Colorado Archive First, and What She Took Proved the Old Experiment Had Been Designed to Survive Its Creators

The first Monday Sophie returned to school for a full day, Claire woke before the alarm.
