Colorado archive sat beneath what had once been a pharmaceutical records center outside Fort Collins.

The building above had been converted into offices.

The underground level officially did not exist.

That phrase had become so familiar to Bell that he stopped reacting to it.

Claire heard the update over secure video while Sophie ate breakfast.

“Did they find Cross?” Daniel asked.

“Not yet.”

Bell’s image shook as he walked.

His team had entered through a sealed freight elevator.

Inside the underground level, they found rows of empty shelving.

Not abandoned.

Cleared.

Recently.

Dust outlined places where storage boxes had sat.

Cold rooms stood open.

Computer racks had been stripped.

Eric stared at the feed.

“She beat you.”

“By about six hours.”

Sophie spooned yogurt.

“She’s very organized.”

Nobody disagreed.

Bell’s team found one active terminal.

Its drive had been physically damaged.

Forensic specialists recovered fragments.

One file name repeated.

RECLAMATION.

Another folder carried a date.

Five years earlier.

Cross had not invented the contingency after NorthStar collapsed.

She had prepared it long before.

Price appeared by video from federal medical custody.

“I did not authorize a five-year plan.”

Bell glared.

“You authorized enough other things.”

Price looked exhausted.

“Cross argued every experimental program needed continuity planning.”

Samuel gave a bitter laugh.

“She always loved euphemisms.”

Claire stared at him.

“You knew her well?”

“Well enough.”

“How?”

She had served on NorthStar’s external ethics advisory group before joining the company.

Samuel described her as meticulous.

Cautious.

Unimpressed by charismatic scientists.

“Then how did she end up doing this?”

Samuel looked genuinely troubled.

“I don’t know.”

Eric answered.

“People don’t become safe just because they speak calmly.”

Samuel looked at his son.

The lesson was aimed partly at him.

He accepted it.

Forensic recovery from the damaged terminal produced an index.

Hundreds of archived sample identifiers.

Not only vectors.

Blood.

Marrow.

Tumor tissue.

Embryonic cell lines.

Genetic sequences.

Some belonged to known subjects.

Others did not.

Dr. Shah scanned the list.

“This is a biological library.”

Bell nodded.

“And it’s gone.”

Cross had taken selected portions.

The question was which.

An inventory checksum survived.

Twenty-eight assets were missing.

Samuel recognized several.

Early vector backbones.

Receptor prototypes.

Orpheus test constructs.

Then he stopped.

“What?”

He pointed at one code.

MAYA-P8.

Eric stared.

“What is that?”

Samuel did not answer.

Lena, joining by secure video, did.

“Maya’s cells.”

Eric turned.

“What cells?”

Lena’s face tightened.

“Postmortem tissue.”

The room went silent.

Claire looked at Samuel.

“You kept her tissue.”

“Yes.”

“After she died.”

“Yes.”

“Did Lena consent?”

“No.”

Lena closed her eyes.

“I found out later.”

Sophie pushed the yogurt away.

“Grandpa.”

Samuel looked toward her.

“What?”

“That’s disgusting.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

No defense.

No justification.

Claire saw that Sophie had become the only person Samuel answered cleanly.

The Maya-P8 sample contained tumor cells collected during Maya’s final illness.

Why would Cross want them now?

Samuel explained.

Maya represented the earliest complete failure.

Her tumor carried receptor patterns no later subject reproduced exactly.

Vale had considered those cells obsolete.

Cross apparently did not.

Dr. Shah leaned closer.

“Failure mapping.”

Samuel nodded.

“If she wants to rebuild the platform safely, Maya’s tumor shows what not to do.”

Eric stared at the screen.

“She is still using my sister.”

Lena whispered, “Yes.”

Bell continued through the missing inventory.

Another code.

SOPHIE-C0.

Claire’s pulse jumped.

“What is that?”

Samuel looked confused.

“I don’t know.”

Price did.

His face changed.

“No.”

Bell noticed.

“What?”

Price hesitated.

“Cord blood.”

Claire stood.

“Sophie’s?”

“Yes.”

“From birth?”

Price nodded.

NorthStar had stored a portion of Sophie’s umbilical cord blood without Claire’s consent.

Claire felt rage rise so quickly she had to grip the table.

“You had cells from before Samuel injected her.”

“Yes.”

Dr. Shah understood immediately.

“That is a pre-vector biological baseline.”

Exactly.

Sophie’s cord blood represented her unmodified state.

Before SV-2.

Before activation.

Before tumors.

Before treatment.

Cross had taken it.

Daniel stared.

“She can compare before and after.”

“Yes.”

Sophie looked at Claire.

“Why would that help her?”

Dr. Shah answered.

“It might show precisely what changed.”

“So she can make it happen again.”

“Or avoid it.”

Sophie frowned.

“Those are very different.”

“Yes.”

Claire looked at Bell.

“Does Cross want to continue the experiment or fix it?”

“We don’t know.”

Eric leaned back.

“That may be the problem.”

Cross’s old internal emails revealed something unexpected.

Years earlier, she had repeatedly objected to deliberate activation.

She called SV-2A ethically indefensible.

She opposed Vale’s challenge model.

She threatened to resign.

Price remembered.

“She did.”

“Then why did she stay?” Claire asked.

Price looked embarrassed.

“Because I convinced her she could limit harm from inside.”

Daniel scoffed.

“That worked well.”

Cross’s later emails changed tone.

Less objection.

More procedural language.

More contingency planning.

Not enthusiasm.

Control.

She began cataloging which samples, protocols, and subjects would need protection if NorthStar faced criminal exposure.

Bell read one sentence aloud.

Scientific continuity must survive individual misconduct.

Claire stared.

“She thought the science mattered more than the people doing it.”

Samuel looked down.

“Yes.”

Daniel glanced at him.

“You recognize the type.”

“Yes.”

Cross may not have shared Vale’s obsession.

She may have believed she was rescuing valid scientific knowledge from unethical actors.

That belief still led her to steal children’s samples and rebuild unauthorized screening networks.

Intent changed.

Outcome did not.

The FBI recovered surveillance footage from the archive.

Cross entered alone.

No tactical team.

No assistants.

She used an old access code.

Spent four hours selecting material.

Left with two cryogenic transport cases.

Bell traced her vehicle.

Abandoned at Denver International Airport.

No matching passenger reservation.

Then a baggage employee reported seeing a woman fitting Cross’s description transfer two medical coolers to a private aviation service.

Flight destination: San Diego.

Samuel reacted.

“No.”

Bell looked at him.

“What now?”

“Not San Diego.”

“What is there?”

“A naval research contractor.”

Eric stared.

“Connected to your father’s study?”

Samuel nodded.

The original military genetic-effects program involving Samuel’s father had been administered through a contractor whose successor organization still operated near San Diego.

Claire felt the past opening again.

“You think Cross is going back to the origin.”

“Yes.”

Bell’s team contacted federal authorities in California.

The contractor, WestArc Biomedical, denied any relationship with NorthStar.

Then investigators produced records showing NorthStar purchased consulting services from WestArc three separate times.

One consultant name appeared repeatedly.

Miriam Cross.

Dr. Shah frowned.

“What was she buying?”

Price answered.

“Exposure-response modeling.”

Samuel went still.

The mutation.

His father’s mutation may have followed chemical exposure during military testing.

Cross had spent years comparing those older environmental data with the hereditary cancer program.

She was not trying merely to reproduce Samuel’s work.

She was trying to answer the question Samuel had never solved.

How much of the Hale mutation was inherited disease, and how much was induced damage?

Eric stared.

“If the mutation was caused, Orpheus might reverse more than the vector.”

Samuel’s face changed.

“Yes.”

Claire understood.

Cross believed the entire program could be reframed.

Not engineering healthy children.

Repairing inherited damage caused by earlier unethical research.

That was scientifically different.

Ethically, the path there remained contaminated.

Sophie listened.

“So she thinks she’s fixing Grandpa’s dad.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“In a very indirect way.”

“Why use kids now?”

Nobody had a good answer.

Bell eventually found one in Cross’s own archived notes.

Pediatric intervention offers maximum epigenetic plasticity.

Claire closed her eyes.

Same argument.

Different language.

Younger bodies changed more easily.

Therefore, Cross believed earlier intervention offered better repair.

Therefore, children became attractive subjects.

Again.

Sophie looked angry.

“She needs to stop liking early.”

Claire stared at her.

“Yes.”

Bell’s California team reached WestArc that evening.

Cross had arrived.

She had used legitimate old credentials.

She met with one senior researcher.

Dr. Owen Sutter.

Then both disappeared.

Security footage showed them leaving with the cryogenic cases.

Sutter’s office contained printed comparisons between Sophie’s cord blood and post-treatment blood.

Someone had already accessed both datasets.

Dr. Shah studied the pages.

“What did they find?”

Samuel read first.

His face changed.

“Sophie’s original cells already had the compensatory signature.”

Eric frowned.

“What?”

The protection found strongly in Eric existed faintly in Sophie before Samuel ever administered SV-2.

Claire stared.

“Then he didn’t create all of this.”

“No.”

Sophie inherited part of Eric’s natural protective adaptation.

The vector disrupted it.

Years later, Eric’s donated factors restored something her body had originally possessed.

Dr. Shah looked almost stunned.

“The treatment worked partly by returning her toward her baseline.”

Claire felt anger and relief collide.

Samuel had spent decades trying to engineer what biology had already begun doing naturally.

Sophie looked at him through the video link.

“So you made it worse.”

Samuel nodded.

“Yes.”

“And Eric’s blood helped undo it.”

“Yes.”

“And I already had some.”

“Yes.”

Sophie leaned back.

“You really overcomplicated everything.”

Daniel laughed despite himself.

Samuel almost smiled.

“Yes.”

Cross’s interest became clearer.

If the natural protective phenotype could be strengthened without genetic engineering, children carrying inherited susceptibility might be treated safely.

No vector.

No artificial receptor.

No deliberate tumor activation.

Dr. Shah’s eyes lit with genuine scientific interest.

“That could be clinically important.”

Claire noticed.

“So now Cross becomes useful?”

“No.”

Shah answered firmly.

“Her question may be useful. Her methods are not.”

Sophie nodded approvingly.

“Good answer.”

The distinction held.

Knowledge did not erase wrongdoing.

Wrongdoing did not make every observation false.

Bell’s team traced Cross and Sutter to a small private laboratory south of San Diego.

They arrived during the night.

No resistance.

Cross was there.

So was Sutter.

Both surrendered.

No children.

No active experiments.

No hidden patients.

The cryogenic samples remained sealed.

Claire exhaled.

For once, nobody had been hurt in the final hours.

Bell interviewed Cross immediately.

She did not deny FutureWell.

She did not deny using Sophie's identity.

She did not deny stealing archived material.

Her defense was not innocence.

Necessity.

“NorthStar was being dismantled by people who did not understand what they were destroying.”

Bell stared.

“You mean evidence?”

“Biological knowledge.”

“Those samples belonged to patients.”

“In many cases, yes.”

“In all cases.”

Cross hesitated.

Bell leaned closer.

“Say it.”

“In all cases.”

Claire listened remotely.

Cross continued.

She believed NorthStar’s criminal structure had contaminated potentially lifesaving research beyond recovery.

She wanted to preserve the scientific pieces long enough to separate them from the crimes.

FutureWell was supposed to identify candidates for observational comparison only.

“No interventions,” Cross insisted.

Bell placed Owen’s mislabeled sample report in front of her.

“You used a child’s blood without informed consent.”

Cross looked at it.

“Yes.”

“You used Sophie Morgan’s identity without permission.”

“Yes.”

“You created fake medical infrastructure.”

“Yes.”

“Then do not tell me you were only observing.”

Cross looked away.

Bell asked about R-47A.

She admitted modifying an old vector.

Not for administration.

For laboratory comparison.

“Was it ever given to a person?”

“No.”

“For once, we will verify that independently.”

Claire watched Cross’s face.

Unlike Vale, she did not seem grandiose.

Unlike Samuel, she did not seem obsessed with legacy.

Unlike Price, she did not speak about markets.

She sounded like someone who had spent so long protecting the idea of valuable science that she had gradually stopped seeing boundaries as real.

That frightened Claire differently.

Cross asked to speak with Claire.

Claire refused.

Then Sophie said, “I will.”

Claire turned.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you do not owe her anything.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

Sophie looked at the screen.

“I want to ask something.”

Claire hesitated.

Then allowed a monitored audio call.

No video.

Cross spoke first.

“Sophie, I’m sorry.”

Sophie ignored it.

“Did you think using my name would help kids?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“Did you know I didn’t want you to?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did your reason matter more than mine?”

Silence.

Cross had no quick answer.

Sophie waited.

Finally Cross said, “Because I believed the stakes were larger than one person.”

“That’s what Grandpa thought.”

Cross inhaled softly.

“Yes.”

“That’s what Vale thought.”

“Yes.”

“That’s what Price thought.”

“Yes.”

“So how are you different?”

Cross did not
