Daniel had rented from them for nine years. The lease was stable, the house was well maintained, and the owners had apparently been considering selling because managing repairs from another state had become inconvenient.

I asked Andrew whether they would accept a cash offer.

He asked whether I was certain.

I said yes.

“What do you intend to do with the property?”

“I haven’t decided.”

That was true.

At first.

I did not buy the house because I wanted revenge.

Revenge is expensive emotional real estate. Harold used to say that when somebody made him angry. You had to keep feeding it, maintaining it, paying taxes on it.

I wanted leverage.

More than that, I wanted the freedom of knowing that nobody in that house could ever again remind me whose roof sheltered me.

Negotiations began through an LLC.

H and D Bait and Tackle.

The name was my idea.

Harold and Dolores.

Harold had once joked that if we retired near a lake, we should open a bait shop and spend the profits on fishing equipment we did not need.

The company never existed while he was alive.

Now it owned a house.

The purchase closed in March.

Daniel never knew.

Neither did Renata.

Their rent continued to be collected through the management company. Repairs went through the same channels. Nothing visible changed.

Everything invisible did.

I owned the house where my daughter-in-law complained that I used too much electricity.

The irony was satisfying for approximately twelve minutes.

Then it became sad.

Money had not transformed me.

It had transformed what I could see.

I began to understand how often I had accepted disrespect because resisting it seemed financially dangerous.

When Renata complained about grocery costs, I no longer felt guilty.

When Daniel suggested I should stop buying “unnecessary things,” I looked at the paperback mystery in my hand and wondered why a seven-dollar novel required his approval.

When Renata asked whether I still needed my own phone line, I remembered her move-out list.

I said yes.

She frowned.

That was all.

My attorneys repeatedly warned me not to reveal the lottery money.

I had no intention of doing so.

The prize had been placed into structures designed to protect both my privacy and my future.
