it.”

I stared.

“Then it was forged.”

“He says someone signed for her.”

“Who?”

“He claims Harold knew.”

My chest tightened.

“Who signed?”

Celeste turned another page.

A second witness statement had been recovered from old estate records.

The handwriting was familiar.

Not Harold’s.

Not Raymond’s.

Mine.

I stared at it.

“That is not my signature.”

“We know.”

“But it looks like it.”

“Yes.”

A primitive version of what Renata would later do with the power of attorney.

Someone had practiced my name decades earlier.

“Who created this?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Then Andrew placed a photograph beside it.

An old family gathering.

1998.

Ruth seated in a chair.

Harold behind her.

Raymond near the doorway.

And standing beside nineteen-year-old Daniel was a young woman I had forgotten entirely.

I leaned closer.

“Who is she?”

Daniel had dated several girls before Renata.

This woman was not Renata.

At least I did not think so.

Andrew pointed to the estate witness list.

“Her name was Melissa Carter.”

My stomach dropped.

Melissa.

Renata’s older sister.

I looked at the photograph again.

Twenty-eight years younger.

Different hair.

Thinner face.

But unmistakable.

“What was Melissa doing with Daniel in 1998?”

Andrew’s answer made the history of my family shift again.

“She wasn’t there because of Daniel.”

“Then why?”

“She worked for Raymond.”

I stared at him.

“What kind of work?”

“Bookkeeping.”

The land, the forged signatures, Melissa, Raymond, Renata.

These relationships had begun years before I thought our families had even met.

And if Melissa had been involved with Ruth’s estate in 1998, then Harold’s death four years ago might not have been the beginning of her role in our family’s secrets.

It might have been the second time she helped somebody take control of that land.
