looked at me.

This was the part.

The missing minutes.

“Because Renata stopped him.”

I stared.

“How?”

“She told him police would see the call log.”

Daniel had already confessed that.

But Melissa continued.

“She said if he called from his phone, investigators would know Harold had been talking to him when he crashed.”

“So?”

“She told Daniel to delete the call first.”

My stomach tightened.

“How long did that take?”

“A minute.”

“And then?”

“She made him give her his phone.”

“What did she do?”

“Put it in the 911?”

Melissa shook her head.

“Not yet.”

I went completely still.

Daniel had told me he called from Renata’s phone after deleting the record.

“What happened before the call?”

Melissa began crying harder.

“Renata asked Daniel what Harold had told him.”

I could barely breathe.

“And?”

“Daniel said Harold had told him to call you.”

I closed my eyes.

“Then what?”

“Renata said if you came before police, everything was over.”

My throat tightened.

“She told Daniel not to call me.”

“Yes.”

“Did he agree?”

“He was crying.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Melissa looked at me.

“Yes.”

I felt something inside me become very quiet.

Daniel had not simply hidden Harold’s last words after the fact.

At the roadside, while his father was still alive, he had chosen not to call me.

“How much time passed?”

“Maybe two minutes.”

“Then?”

“Harold stopped responding.”

My hands began shaking.

“What did Daniel do?”

“He panicked.”

“Then he called 911.”

“Yes.”

I looked toward the investigator.

“Is that consistent with the emergency call?”

He nodded.

The recording had been obtained.

Daniel’s voice reportedly sounded frantic.

He said he had just arrived.

That was false.

He had already been there for several minutes.

“Did Renata tell him to say that?”

Melissa nodded.

“Yes.”

I leaned back.

For days, Daniel’s confession had seemed complete because it was terrible.

Now I understood something important about confession.

People often reveal the worst thing they can bear to admit while protecting the thing they cannot.

Daniel had admitted leaving Harold.

Deleting the call.

Hiding evidence.

But not this.

Not that he had stood beside his injured father and delayed calling me and emergency services while Renata organized a lie.

“Why are you telling us now?” I asked Melissa.

She stared at me.

“Because Travis is making it sound like I did everything.”

“You helped.”

“I know.”

“Renata?”

“She started it.”

“You followed Harold.”

“I know.”

“Travis?”

“He made it worse.”

“And Daniel?”

Melissa looked down.

“He was weak.”

I almost corrected her.

Then stopped.

She was right.

Weakness can kill as effectively as malice when it keeps choosing the wrong side.

The investigator moved to the financial scheme.

Melissa admitted forging portions of Ruth’s estate amendment in 1998.

Raymond had encouraged it.

Harold discovered the truth afterward but chose to preserve Ruth’s intended outcome rather than expose the forgery.

Melissa later helped move control of the land toward Renata.

“Why?” I asked.

“Money.”

At least she did not decorate the answer.

“Did Renata target Daniel?”

Melissa’s face changed.

“Yes.”

The word hurt more than I expected.

“From the beginning?”

“She knew who he was.”

“Did Daniel know she knew?”

“No.”

“How did you arrange their him?”

Melissa hesitated.

“I think she did eventually.”

That was somehow worse.

People want greed and love to be opposites.

They are not.

A person can love someone and exploit them.

Love does not purify behavior.

“Did Renata marry him for the land?”

“At first, the land was part of
