6 – Mrs. Vance’s Sealed Letter Revealed the Argument Brenda Had Hidden, and Why My Dress Had Become a Weapon Before I Arrived

The letter from Brenda’s mother was dated fourteen years earlier.

That meant she had written it long after the prom, long after my mother died, and long after Brenda and I had built separate lives.

Her handwriting leaned sharply to the right.

Every word looked deliberate.

Dear Martha, if Brenda has finally given you this, then perhaps she has at last become brave enough to admit what happened in our house before your prom.

I lowered the page.

The kitchen was silent.

I continued.

Mrs. Vance wrote that she had carried guilt about the incident for years.

Not because she had encouraged Brenda.

Because she had unknowingly created the competition Brenda later used against me.

The bakery conversation had happened exactly as Brenda described.

My mother told her about the blue fabric.

Mrs. Vance saw a portion of it.

She admired it.

That evening, she repeated the story at dinner.

But Brenda had left out what happened next.

Her father laughed.

I stopped.

According to the letter, Mr. Vance made a remark about “poor people making do.”

He asked why any girl would wear homemade clothing to a formal dance.

Mrs. Vance argued with him.

She said the Higgins girl would probably look lovely.

Then Mr. Vance turned toward Brenda.

And said, “At least no one will mistake her for you.”

I read the sentence twice.

The cruelty was subtle.

I understood it anyway.

Mrs. Vance explained.

Brenda’s father compared people constantly.

Children.

Employees.

Neighbors.

His own wife.

His daughter.

To him, approval was never given without taking it from someone else.

If another person was praised, Brenda learned to hear criticism.

When Mrs. Vance admired my mother’s work, Brenda did not hear: Martha’s dress might be beautiful.

She heard: Your expensive dress might not be enough.

That did not excuse what Brenda did.

Mrs. Vance explicitly wrote that.

It explained the mechanism.

That was different.

I continued.

After dinner, Brenda argued with her parents.

She accused her mother of embarrassing her.

Mrs. Vance told her she was being ridiculous.

Mr. Vance told Brenda to stop whining and make sure no homemade dress stole attention from her at the dance.

I sat back.

There it was.

The sentence that sharpened everything.

Make sure.

Not a direct command to humiliate me.

But permission.

Perhaps even encouragement.

Brenda’s father had turned insecurity into competition and handed it to a teenager already frightened of losing approval.

Mrs. Vance wrote that she regretted not challenging him immediately.

Instead, she cleaned the dinner table.

She listened while father and daughter argued.

Then she allowed the subject to disappear.

The next week, I walked home crying.

Silence again.

Different house.

Same pattern.

The letter continued.

Mrs. Vance learned what Brenda had done at the prom because one of Brenda’s friends told her own mother.

Oakridge gossip completed the rest.

That was why Brenda’s mother confronted her.

That was why she insisted Brenda return to the bakery.

I had not known Brenda went there because her mother made her.

According to the letter, Mrs. Vance expected my mother to be furious.

Instead, my mother listened.

Then she said the sentence Brenda remembered.

Whatever made you hurt Martha must hurt you too.

Mrs. Vance wrote that the remark embarrassed her because it contained more generosity than she believed her family had earned.

I stopped again.

My mother had spent her entire life surprising me after she was gone.

I could imagine her behind the bakery counter.

Flour on her apron.

Hair pinned back.

Hands tired.

Looking at Brenda and recognizing not innocence, but pain.

Not excusing the cruelty.

Understanding it.

I did not know if I possessed that kind of mercy.

Perhaps I never would.

The letter moved to the church sale.

Mrs. Vance described finding the blue dress in Brenda’s closet.

She knew where it came from.

She demanded an explanation.

Brenda lied about the costume.

Her mother removed the section of fabric.

That part Brenda had told me honestly.

But there was another detail.

Mrs. Vance had intended to return the dress herself.

The next morning, it was gone.

Brenda claimed she had donated it again.

Mrs. Vance never found out where.

I frowned.

That differed from what Brenda told me.

She had said she hid it.

Maybe both were true at different times.

Then I reached the final section.

Mrs. Vance wrote that years later she asked Brenda again.

Brenda admitted she had not donated the dress.

She gave it to someone.

No name appeared.

I sat very still.

Why would that matter?

My eyes moved down.

The person Brenda gave it to was Tommy Mercer.

I read the line again.

Tommy.

The boy who had accompanied me to the dance.

The boy who laughed.

The boy who apologized at the reunion.

Mrs. Vance did not know why.

She wrote that Brenda refused to explain.

Suddenly, the kitchen felt colder.

I read the rest quickly.

The letter ended with an apology.

Not only for Brenda.

For herself.

For her husband.

For every adult who saw adolescent cruelty forming and decided children should resolve such things on their own.

The final line read:

We were all older than you, Martha. We should have known better.

I placed the page flat on the table.

Tommy had the dress.

Or had once had it.

Why?

I reached for my telephone.

Then stopped.

It was after eight.

That did not matter.

I had waited fifty-five years without knowing there was a question.

I could wait until morning.

Apparently, I could not.

I called Brenda first.

She answered quickly.

“Martha?”

“I read the letter.”

Silence.

“You said your mother found the dress.”

“Yes.”

“You said she cut off the fabric.”

“Yes.”

“You did not say you gave the rest to Tommy Mercer.”

A long pause.

“How did you—”

“It’s in the letter.”

“She knew?”

“Apparently.”

Brenda exhaled.

“I didn’t realize.”

“Why did you give Tommy my dress?”

“It wasn’t like that.”

“That is becoming a very popular sentence.”

“Martha.”

“Why?”

She became quiet.

Then she said, “Because he asked for it.”

I stood.

“What?”

“He asked whether I knew where the dress went.”

“When?”

“A few weeks after the church sale.”

“Why would he ask you?”

“Because he knew I bought it.”

“How?”

“I told him.”

I gripped the back of a chair.

“You told him you bought my dress?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I was trying to impress him.”

The absurdity of the sentence made me stare at the wall.

“You were trying to impress my date by telling him you bought the dress you mocked me for wearing?”

“When you say it like that, it sounds insane.”

“It was insane before I said it.”

“Yes.”

I heard something in her voice.

Shame.

But also fear.

“What aren’t you telling me?”

“Martha.”

“What?”

“Tommy liked you.”

I closed my eyes.

“He went to prom with me.
