administrator had done business with Victor.

Not recently.

Years earlier.

The administrator helped arrange guardianship referrals for residents whose families claimed they too.

Margaret had lived at Sunrise Pines.

Carol Wynn, the employee who stole belongings from her room, had worked there temporarily.

Victor’s retail network received the tickets.

The facility connected the beginning and intended end of the scheme.

A dead resident’s stolen ticket.

Another older woman moved into the same resident?”

Probably not initially.

Caleb’s messages suggested Renata learned the fuller history only after my claim.

That was when her behavior changed.

She stopped treating me merely as an inconvenience.

She began searching my papers.

Asking Daniel about accounts.

Manufacturing incidents.

Pushing she could not.

That was false.

She had already photographed several pages.

Another message ordered her to deliver my account information to Caleb.

She sent partial independence.

If Victor controlled all the information, Renata remained his subordinate.

If she kept some for herself, she could bargain.

Further messages confirmed it.

Victor became increasingly angry.

He accused Renata of “playing both sides.”

Caleb warned her that Victor believed she intended to take the lottery money herself.

Renata replied:

Maybe I’m tired of everybody taking my cut.

My cut.

As though my money had already been divided by people who never owned You lied about Harold. You knew V threatened Dolores before the crash.

I’m done carrying this for you.

The rest had been torn away.

“Carrying what?” I asked.

Nobody knew.

Caleb had apparently told Renata something at the motel.

Something about Margaret Bell.

Harold.

Victor’s threat.

Then they fought.

Caleb disappeared.

Renata continued alone.

Police issued an alert for him as both suspect and possible endangered person.

Hours later, Caleb called his attorney.

Alive.

Injured.

He agreed to surrender.

The meeting occurred at a hospital.

He had a deep cut on his forearm.

He claimed Renata attacked him with broken glass.

Renata was not present to dispute it.

Then Caleb began cooperating.

Not because conscience arrived.

Because everyone else had already started talking.

“What did he lie to Renata about?” I asked.

The answer took hours.

Victor’s lottery operation had been active before Harold began investigating.

Harold discovered it while following Walter Nunn’s complaint.

Victor learned Harold was compiling names.

That became another reason Victor wanted Harold frightened.

Not only land.

Not only lending fraud.

Harold had stumbled into the lottery theft network too.

“Did Renata know before Harold died?”

“No,” Celeste said.

“She knew Victor was involved in financial crimes, but Caleb says she did not know Harold had discovered the lottery operation.”

“Then after my birthday?”

“Caleb told her part of it.”

“Not everything.”

“No.”

He told Renata my ticket came from Victor.

He did not tell her it might have been stolen from Margaret Bell.

He did not tell her Harold had previously investigated Victor’s stores.

He did not tell her Victor had threatened me partly because Harold was close to exposing multiple schemes.

That was what Renata learned at the motel.

“She thought Harold died because of the land folder,” Daniel said.

“Yes.”

“But Victor also wanted him stopped because of the lottery investigation.”

“Yes.”

Harold had carried too many truths at once.

The people chasing him had different reasons for wanting him silent.

Then Caleb revealed something else.

Victor had not intended my ticket to be claimed immediately.

He wanted to wait until publicity around Margaret Bell’s estate disappeared.

Then use a claimant with no connection to the store.

“Who?”

Caleb hesitated.

Eventually he answered.

Renata.

I stared.

“She was supposed to claim it?”

“Eventually.”

“Did she know?”

“No.”

Victor intended to create a believable purchase story and use Renata as the claimant because she had no criminal record and could be controlled through her involvement in other fraud.

But Caleb worried she would take the money.

So he never told her.

He gave her the ticket only temporarily while Victor prepared documents.

Then Renata gave it to me.

The entire scheme collapsed because one conspirator did not trust another conspirator with knowledge of how valuable the stolen object was.

I almost admired the stupidity.

“What would have happened to the real victim?” I asked.

“Nothing,” Caleb said through his statement.

Margaret Bell was already dead.

Carol Wynn believed the ticket was worthless.

Victor expected nobody to connect it.

Except Harold had already connected the store to other missing tickets.

He had simply died before my particular ticket entered the story.

Then Caleb offered the information prosecutors wanted most.

Victor kept a master ledger.

Not digital.

Paper.

Claims.

Ticket serial numbers.

Payments.

Names.

If recovered, it could identify the victims on Harold’s list.

“Where?”

Caleb said Renata had it.

My pulse quickened.

“She took it from cabin six?”

“No.”

She had taken it from the abandoned roadside motel.

The records office.

That was what she had been collecting while fleeing.

Not only money.

The master ledger.

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

Of course.

With that ledger, Renata could implicate Victor and Caleb in crimes stretching back years.

She could bargain.

Perhaps that was her plan.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Investigators had already installed monitoring procedures.

Celeste nodded for me to answer.

I did.

No one spoke.

Then I heard breathing.

“Renata?”

Silence.

Finally:

“Dolores.”

Her voice sounded exhausted.

“Where are you?”

“You know I can’t tell you.”

“Then why call?”

“Because Caleb is lying again.”

“About what?”

“Harold.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What about him?”

“He knew about your ticket.”

“That is impossible.
