photograph.”

The bride said, “Or another event.”

My memory came again.

Glass breaking.

Anna shouting.

A man’s voice.

Then a door opening.

I pressed my fingers against my temple.

“At 10:22, someone left.”

“How do you know?”

“I remember the back door.”

The detective waited.

I saw it.

Just for a second.

Rain outside.

A man stepping into darkness.

Not Malcolm.

Robert Voss.

He turned before leaving.

And he said something to Anna.

This time the words came.

“I’ll keep the ledger.”

My eyes opened.

“There was a ledger.”

Carol’s face changed.

Edward stood.

“What ledger?”

“I don’t know.”

I looked at the photograph.

“But Robert took it.”

The detective asked where Robert lived when he died.

Carol gave an address.

The detective’s call ended.

He looked at us.

“Property was sold after his death.”

“To whom?”

He checked his notes.

“Malcolm Price.”

Of course.

My son shook his head.

“He bought the house of the man who had evidence against him.”

“Apparently.”

“Does he still own it?”

The detective checked again.

“No.”

“When did he sell?”

“Never.”

We waited.

The detective looked up.

“It burned down nine years ago.”

Carol sat down.

My son stared at the photograph.

Malcolm had spent years burning, burying, moving, and rewriting every piece of the past he could reach.

But Anna had written one instruction on the back of a photograph.

Ask about 10:22.

And at 10:22, Robert Voss had walked out of our
