a mist, but Emma still watched every person who passed the hospital-room doorway.

Olivia slept beneath a white blanket.

Machines made soft, regular sounds around her.

Emma hated every one of them.

She had decided that beeping meant something was wrong, no matter how many times the nurse explained otherwise.

Karen sat nearby.

“You can move your chair closer.”

Emma already had.

Its metal legs touched the bed frame.

“Will she remember?”

“Remember what?”

“Today.”

“I don’t know.”

Emma considered that.

“Maybe that’s good.”

Karen did not answer.

Emma leaned toward Olivia.

“I’ll remember for you.”

The detective entered a few minutes later.

Lena Brooks was forty-three, soft-spoken, and patient enough to let silence do part of her work.

She introduced herself without mentioning Michael.

Emma immediately did.

“Is Daddy here?”

“No.”

“Does surprised.

Adults in her world apparently did not tell Michael Carter what he was permitted to do.

He told them.

“Can doctors get in trouble?”

“Yes.”

“For giving somebody medicine?”

“Sometimes.”

Emma looked toward Olivia.

“What if they say it’s helping?”

“That depends on what happened.”

Emma thought for several seconds.

“Daddy always says it helps.”

“Does Olivia think it helps?”

“No.”

“Do you?”

Emma shook her head.

Lena did not push further.

Instead, she showed Emma a photograph of the sealed syringe.

“Is this the one you brought to Officer Reed?”

“Yes.”

“Where did you find it?”

“Bathroom trash.”

“After your father used it?”

“Yes.”

“Tell me only what you remember.”

Emma’s account came in fragments.

Michael had called Olivia downstairs after lunch.

Olivia did not want to go.

Michael became angry.

He told her she had been difficult at school.

Emma followed.

Michael told Emma to leave.

She stood in the hallway instead.

Through the partially open door, she saw Olivia sitting at the kitchen table.

Michael held the syringe.

Olivia turned her head away.

He told her to stop being dramatic.

Then he held her face.

Emma stopped talking.

Lena waited.

“He put it in her mouth.”

“What happened afterward?”

“She spit some out.”

“Then what?”

“Daddy got mad.”

Emma rubbed her thumb against the edge of her fingernail.

“He filled another one.”

That explained the second syringe.

“What did Olivia do?”

“Cried.”

“Did your father stop?”

“No.”

“What happened after she swallowed it?”

“He made her sit on the couch.”

“For how long?”

“I don’t know.”

“Was she awake?”

“At first.”

Emma’s voice became smaller.

“Then she started talking funny.”

Lena wrote nothing for several seconds.

“What did you do?”

“I asked Daddy if she was okay.”

“What did he say?”

“He said she was finally calm.”

The words sat between them.

Karen turned her eyes toward the window.

Lena continued gently.

“How did you get the syringe?”

“When Daddy went upstairs, I took it from the trash.”

“Why?”

Emma looked confused by the question.

“So somebody would know.”

“Know what?”

“That he did it.”

Lena felt something cold settle behind her ribs.

A seven-year-old had understood the difference between telling a story and proving one.

Someone had taught her that words alone would not be enough.

“Why hide it in your shoe?”

“Because he checks.”

“Checks what?”

“Everything.”

“Why?”

“To make sure we don’t take things.”

“What things?”

Emma hesitated.

“Proof.”

Lena glanced at Karen.

That word was not accidental.

“Has there been proof before?”

Emma nodded.

“What happened to it?”

“Daddy found it.”

“What was it?”

“A paper.”

“What kind of paper?”

“From Olivia’s school.”

Lena leaned slightly forward.

“What did the paper say?”

“I don’t know all the words.”

“That’s okay.”

“It said she was sleepy.”

Lena’s pen stopped.

“When?”

“Before summer.”

Months ago.

“What happened when your father found the paper?”

“He tore it up.”

“Was your mother there?”

Emma’s face changed.

Until then, she had answered difficult questions with the guarded seriousness of a child trying to be useful.

Now she shut down.

“No.”

“Where is your mother?”

“I don’t know.”

Karen looked at Lena.

The case had just widened again.

At the station, Daniel and Megan were examining the handwritten dosage sheet.

Some entries contained only dates and amounts.

Others contained brief comments.

Restless.

Argumentative.

Would not sleep.

School issue.

One phrase appeared several times beside Olivia’s initials.

Adjusted upward.

Daniel read it twice.

Megan stood beside him.

“He was experimenting.”

“We don’t know that yet.”

“What would you call this?”

“Evidence requiring an explanation.”

Megan exhaled.

“You always talk like a report?”

“Only when I’m trying not to punch a wall.”

That silenced her.

The adult patient named on the pharmacy transaction had been identified.

Her name was Rebecca Hale.

Sixty-two years old.

She had been Michael Carter’s patient.

She had died eleven months earlier.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“That prescription was filled today.”

Megan checked the date again.

“Maybe an old record?”

“No.”

He called the pharmacy.

The pharmacist confirmed that Michael’s credential had been used electronically that morning.

The prescription was entered under Rebecca Hale’s patient profile.

The medication was collected less than two hours later.

“Who picked it up?”

Daniel asked.

The pharmacist hesitated.

“I’ll need authorization before releasing surveillance.”

“You have a child in the hospital.”

Another pause.

“I can preserve it.”

“Do that.”

Daniel notified Lena.

Her response was immediate.

“I’m requesting the warrant.”

Michael remained in the interview room with counsel on the way.

He had stopped demanding access to the hospital.

That change bothered Daniel.

Michael had arrived furious.

Now he was calm.

Too calm.

Daniel checked the camera.

Michael sat alone with his hands folded.

Waiting.

Not frightened.

Waiting.

The warrant for the Carter residence was approved shortly after eight.

Officers arrived at the house Emma had identified.

It stood on a quiet street of clipped hedges, porch lights, and expensive renovations.

Nothing about it announced danger.

The kitchen was immaculate.

No dishes in the sink.

No medication on the counters.

No trash in the bathroom bin.

Someone had cleaned.

Daniel arrived while the search was underway.

“Anything?”

An officer shook his head.

“Not downstairs.”

“What about bedrooms?”

“Starting now.”

Emma and Olivia shared a room.

Two matching beds.

Two desks.

Two lamps.

But the room was not as symmetrical as it first appeared.

Emma’s desk contained crayons, school worksheets, library books.

Olivia’s drawers were nearly empty.

Daniel opened the nightstand.

Nothing.

Then he noticed scratches around the screws on the back panel.

He called the evidence technician.

They removed it.

Behind the panel was a folded envelope.

Inside were school notices.

Three.

All concerned Olivia.

Fatigue.

Difficulty concentrating.

Falling asleep during class.

Unexplained nausea.

One requested a meeting with her parents.

Another recommended medical evaluation.

The final notice stated that the school nurse had attempted to contact both parents.

Daniel looked at the dates.

They corresponded closely with several entries on Michael’s dosage sheet.

He called Lena.

“We found the school papers.”

“Emma told us about one.”

“There are three.”

“What else?”

“We’re still searching.”

Daniel entered Michael’s home office.

Locked cabinets lined one wall.

A small shredder stood beside the desk.

Fresh strips of paper filled its bin.

He photographed them.

The evidence technician began collecting the pieces for reconstruction.

Daniel opened the desk drawers.

The first contained ordinary files.

The second was locked.

A warrant-authorized search opened it.

Inside were prescription pads, old patient labels, and several bottles with identifying information removed.

Beneath them lay a photograph.

Daniel picked it up by the edges.

It showed Emma and Olivia with a woman.

Their mother.

On the back, someone had written:

Sarah, Emma, Olivia — Lakeview, three summers ago.

Daniel stared at Sarah’s face.

The girls resembled her strongly.

“Find anything on the mother?”

Megan asked.

“Not yet.”

Daniel photographed the picture.

A sound came from downstairs.

“Reed!”

He followed it to the kitchen.

An officer stood beside the refrigerator.

Behind a removable lower panel, investigators had discovered a small insulated case.

Inside were medication bottles.

Syringes.

Several pharmacy labels.

And a notebook.

Daniel opened it carefully.

The handwriting matched the dosage sheet.

But this record was far more detailed.

Names.

Dates.

Amounts.

Observed reactions.

Emma’s name appeared too.

Only twice.

Olivia’s appeared dozens of times.

Then Daniel reached the final written page.

A note had been entered that morning.

Increase again tonight.

Daniel read it once.

Then again.

The next line was worse.

If ineffective, move to alternate method.

There was no explanation of what “alternate method” meant.

But something else had been written beneath it.

One name.

Sarah.

Daniel called Lena.

She answered from the hospital.

“What did you find?”

Daniel looked at the photograph of the twins’ missing mother.

“We need to figure out what happened to Sarah Carter.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: A Photograph of Their Missing Mother Led Detectives to a Case Everyone
