12 – Inside Warehouse C-17, Detectives Found Proof Natalie Survived, and a Message Showing Sarah Had Chosen One Final Risk

The warehouse complex had once housed furniture distributors and auto-parts suppliers.

Half the units now stood empty.

C-17 sat at the far end of a row facing a drainage canal.

No company name appeared on the door.

According to property records, the unit had been leased for eighteen months by Cole Medical Logistics.

Registered owner: Janice Cole.

Lena read the filing from inside the surveillance van.

“Medical logistics.”

Daniel shook his head.

“She wasn’t just an office manager.”

The business had no employees.

No active commercial registration beyond the initial filing.

No visible customers.

Rent paid automatically from an account funded through transfers originating from Michael’s clinic.

The warrant team entered at 10:32 a.m.

The warehouse smelled of cardboard, dust, and disinfectant.

Metal shelves divided the interior into narrow aisles.

Several were empty.

Others held old medical supplies.

Boxes of gloves.

Disposable tubing.

Outdated office equipment.

No people.

No immediate sign of Sarah.

The shelving unit from Natalie’s photograph stood against the rear wall.

Blue inventory label.

C-17.

Exact match.

Lena walked toward the patch of concrete visible in the picture.

A dark stain had been cleaned aggressively.

Alternate light revealed blood.

“Collect everything.”

The forensic team began work.

Daniel searched the shelving.

One shelf held zip ties.

Unopened.

Another held packing tape.

A third held empty medication containers with labels removed.

Lena felt anger rise but kept her voice level.

“Photograph before moving.”

Behind the shelving was a folding chair.

One leg bent.

A dried reddish smear marked the underside.

Blood presumptive positive.

The photograph of Natalie may have been taken here after an assault.

But no body had been found.

No grave.

No evidence she died at the warehouse.

A small office occupied one corner.

Inside were a desk, filing cabinets, and an unplugged computer.

The hard drive had been removed.

Daniel opened the first drawer.

Shipping receipts.

The second.

Cash-payment records.

The third was locked.

Investigators forced it under the warrant.

Inside lay several driver’s licenses.

Some expired.

Some belonging to dead patients.

Rebecca Hale’s was among them.

Natalie Voss’s was not.

Sarah Carter’s was.

Lena stared at the photograph on the card.

So Natalie had not necessarily used a stolen license voluntarily provided by Sarah.

Janice possessed it now.

“How did this get here?”

Daniel asked.

Lena bagged it.

“We ask Janice.”

The drawer also contained pharmacy cards.

Insurance cards.

Patient-identification documents.

Tools for exploiting identities after people stopped appearing at the clinic.

A small notebook listed initials, dates, and numbers.

Several corresponded to prescription transactions.

Janice had apparently managed the administrative side of Michael’s concealed prescribing.

Maybe for money.

Maybe loyalty.

Maybe something worse.

At the bottom of the drawer was Natalie’s passport.

Daniel froze.

“That’s bad.”

Lena agreed.

If Natalie had intended to flee internationally, she had not done so without her passport.

A second search team found a locked interior room.

No exterior windows.

Concrete walls.

The door had been reinforced from outside.

Lena stared at it before entry.

“Camera first.”

A small inspection camera passed beneath the door.

No person visible.

The lock was cut.

Inside sat a cot.

Bucket.

Water bottles.

Empty food containers.

Blanket.

The room had been used to hold someone.

On one wall were scratches.

Not random.

Lines.

Groups of five.

Days counted.

Twenty-three marks.

Daniel swallowed.

“Three weeks.”

A sentence had been written beneath the marks in pencil.

S is alive.

Lena stepped closer.

“What does S mean?”

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“Sarah.”

Possibly.

Or someone else.

They photographed it.

Under the cot, investigators found a strand of dark hair.

Natalie had dark hair.

DNA testing would decide.

A second inscription appeared behind the blanket.

J says Michael doesn’t know I’m here.

Lena read it aloud.

“Janice was holding her separately.”

Daniel looked around the cell-like room.

“If Natalie wrote this, Janice may have been acting without Michael.”

“Or lying to Natalie.”

The next line was faint.

J wants Rachel’s copy.

That connected the detention directly to Rachel’s missing backup evidence.

Natalie had been held here because Janice believed she knew where it was.

Maybe the photograph sent to Sarah was staged.

Natalie unconscious or injured.

Not dead.

A way to frighten Sarah into revealing herself.

The theory grew stronger when technicians found old blood matching Natalie’s preliminary profile from medical records.

Natalie had been here.

Alive long enough to count days.

What happened afterward remained unknown.

The warehouse security system had not been active during that period.

But Janice’s seized cloud account contained fragments of messages.

One thread with Michael was especially revealing.

Janice: She won’t tell me.

Michael: Then stop asking.

Janice: We need the other copy.

Michael: I said stop.

Janice: You’ll thank me when this is over.

Michael: Do not involve me in whatever you’re doing.

Daniel read the exchange twice.

“Plausible deniability.”

“Maybe.”

“Or he really didn’t know.”

Lena disliked both possibilities.

Michael could be guilty of some crimes and unaware of others.

Janice could have expanded beyond him.

Criminal partnerships often fractured into overlapping motives.

Another message occurred two days later.

Michael: Where is Natalie?

Janice: Gone.

Michael: What does that mean?

Janice: Exactly what it says.

There were no more references for weeks.

That suggested Michael may not have known Natalie was held at C-17.

But Janice clearly had.

The interrogation began that afternoon.

Janice requested an attorney.

Questioning stopped.

Then, after counsel arrived and reviewed the first batch of evidence, Janice changed course.

She offered a limited statement.

No immunity.

No promises.

Lena entered with Daniel.

Janice sat upright, hands folded.

She was forty-eight, carefully dressed, hair tied back so tightly it emphasized the strain around her eyes.

“You followed Sarah to Portland.”

Janice said
