later?”

“I think so.”

That explained why Rebecca mailed tablets to Sarah.

She had discovered something unfamiliar in her organizer.

She did not trust Margaret enough to ask.

Or perhaps she suspected her.

Margaret whispered, “She stopped calling me the week before she died.”

The pain in that sentence carried years.

Rebecca may have died believing her sister had betrayed her knowingly.

Margaret had spent eleven months believing Michael was responsible while hiding her own time of death.

One exposure.

Possibly two.

Not chronic treatment.

The sedative appeared repeatedly.

The cardiac drug appeared only near the final growth segment.

The medical examiner’s preliminary opinion changed.

Cause of death remained pending.

Manner changed from natural to undetermined.

For prosecutors, that was significant.

For Margaret, devastating.

For Michael, complicated.

The evidence no longer supported a simple theory that he personally administered the fatal substance.

But he had supplied Stephen with medical information.

His prescription credentials had been part of the network.

His fraudulent records helped disguise the exposure.

He was implicated even if he had never touched the pill.

Lena interviewed Stephen under federal custody.

His attorney permitted no substantive answers.

Stephen sat with his injured shoulder immobilized.

Lena placed Pike’s notebook down.

Then Margaret’s statement.

Then toxicology.

Stephen
