other documents?” Judge Cole asked.

Tessa hesitated.

“Medical authorization.”

Detective Ortiz searched the screenshots Tessa had preserved.

One was a rapidly.

She said she believed Vaughn was divorcing me.

She knew about impersonating me at the bank.

She knew about entering Finch Legal.

She knew about the passports.

What she denied knowing was that anyone intended to hurt me.

Judge Cole completed the emergency custody order.

Vaughn was forbidden to contact me or the children.

The passports were flagged.

The airline was notified.

The insurance policies were frozen.

As officers prepared to remove him, Vaughn looked at me.

“You think you won?”

I did not answer.

“You have no idea what you destroyed.”

“You stole from your children.”

“I was home.

Reporters had already gathered outside the courthouse.

Denise kept me moving.

Across the street, a man beside a black SUV filmed us.

Detective Ortiz noticed him.

He drove away before she reached him.

I had never seen him.

At Mrs. Weaver’s apartment, June threw herself into my arms.

“Did the judge believe envelope.

Under the third was a storage-unit receipt.

West Fulton Street.

Unit 317.

The rental contract bore my name.

The envelope contained a letter supposedly written by me.

It said I could no longer handle motherhood.

That I had stolen documents from work.

That I had emptied the children’s account.

That I had fled to Belize.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

Denise read it twice.

“This was supposed to explain your disappearance.”

Detective Ortiz requested a warrant for the storage unit.

While we waited, I searched Vaughn’s remaining belongings.

Inside an old work boot was a prepaid phone.

Seventeen missed calls came from a contact saved only as D.

Ortiz played the newest voicemail.

A man said Vaughn should already have gotten me onto the plane.

He said he had cleared the storage unit.

He had kept an original file.

And he wanted the rest of his money.

The warrant arrived shortly after four.

Ortiz searched Unit 317.

Most of it had been emptied.

What remained was a folding table, a locked metal box, and hundreds of photographs.

Photographs of me.

Leaving work.

Shopping.

Walking the children to school.

Visiting my mother’s grave.

Some photographs had been taken while Vaughn stood beside me.

Someone else had been watching.

Inside the metal box were newspaper clippings about a woman named Rachel Mercer.

She had died eleven years earlier.

In Belize.

There was a photograph of Rachel beside a younger Vaughn.

Except the accompanying marriage certificate did not identify him as Vaughn.

His legal first name was Victor.

Victor Ellis.

Rachel’s husband.

“What happened to her?” I asked Ortiz over the phone.

“She fell from a hotel balcony.”

“Was anyone charged?”

“No. Paid to her husband four weeks later.”

My knees weakened.

Vaughn had done this before.

A note inside the box was addressed to Victor.

The writer said he had helped once but would not help bury another wife.

It was signed D.

The same person who had left the voicemail.

Before Ortiz could say more, three knocks sounded against my door.

Slow.

Deliberate.

A man called my name.

The officers inside drew their weapons.

“Who are you?”

“Daniel Mercer.”

Ortiz heard him through the phone.

“Do not open that door.”

The man outside spoke again.

“Rachel was my sister.”

“What do you want?”

“I have the original file Vaughn was searching for.”

“Put it under the door.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because it proves Rachel’s death wasn’t an accident.”

A heavy impact sounded outside.

Then running footsteps.

An officer opened the door.

Daniel Mercer lay on the floor.

Blood spread beneath his head.

A thick brown folder had fallen beside him.

His eyes opened briefly as I knelt near him.

He caught my wrist.

“There were two men in Belize.”

“What?”

“Vaughn didn’t do it alone.”

His fingers slipped away.

The ambulance was called.

Inside Daniel’s folder was an old photograph outside the Belize hotel.

Vaughn stood near the entrance.

Beside him stood another man.

The same man who had filmed me outside the courthouse.

I turned the photograph over.

Two names had been written on the back.

Victor Ellis.

Harold Finch.

My supervisor.

The man who had promised my job was safe.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The Man Who Protected My Job Was Connected to Vaughn’s First Dead Wife, and Daniel Mercer Had Saved the Evidence They Feared

Judge Cole held the travel documents in both hands.
