Margaret Voss had been taken outside a pharmacy.

She looked older than the woman in the death certificate photograph, but not enough older to leave any doubt.

Same high federal agents moved around the evidence room behind the glass wall.

“Where was this taken?”

Agent Marcus Hale, who had joined the case after federal investigators took over the financial side, checked the evidence sheet.

“St. Louis.”

“Does Gerald know she’s alive?”

“We don’t know.”

“You identification?”

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”

The answer arrived less than an hour later.

Margaret Lane had existed on paper for fifteen years.

Her Social Security number belonged to a woman who died as an infant in 1968.

Her birth certificate had been reissued using fraudulent supporting documents.

Her driver’s license was valid because the identity beneath it had passed every database check.

The method was sophisticated.

Old.

And familiar.

Harold Finch’s kind of work.

“Did Gerald fake her death?” I asked.

Hale rested both hands on the table.

“It appears Gerald collected the insurance bag.

Two agents approached.

She dropped the bag.

Then she ran.

Not far.

She had arthritis in one knee and made it less than half a block before stopping beside a bus shelter.

According to Hale, her first question was not whether she was under arrest.

It was:

“Did Gerald send you?”

That evening Margaret agreed to an interview.

I was not permitted in the room.

But because her story concerned the threat against me and my children, Hale allowed Denise and me to watch through secure him.”

Hale waited.

Margaret continued.

Gerald had not invented the system.

He inherited part of it.

Before insurance fraud, forged identities, and staged accidental deaths, there had been a private network serving wealthy clients who wanted problems handled quietly.

Sometimes those problems were money.

Sometimes scandal.

Sometimes custody.

Sometimes people.

Gerald entered the network in his twenties through his uncle.

“He was good with numbers,” Margaret said.

“Insurance gave him a cleaner mechanism.”

“Cleaner than what?”

Margaret looked at Hale.

“You already know.”

Hale did not move.

“Murder.”

She nodded.

According to Margaret, Gerald began by finding legal ways to hide assets.

Then he learned how easily legal paperwork could shape criminal investigations.

A policy suggested motive.

A medical diagnosis suggested cause.

A history of addiction changed how police interpreted an overdose.

A troubled marriage made disappearance believable.

The story came first.

Then evidence was built to support it.

“Harold Finch?” Hale asked.

“Gerald recruited him later.”

“Samuel Keene?”

“Later.”

“Adrian Bell?”

“Much later.”

“Victor getting his hands dirty.”

My stomach tightened.

Hale asked about Margaret’s supposed drowning.

She took a long breath.

“Gerald had reached a point where he wanted to disappear from the organization.”

“Why?”

“He was frightened.”

“Of whom?”

“Clients.”

“What clients?”

“People who believed payment bought permanent silence.”

She said Gerald had begun keeping copies of everything.

Insurance contracts.

Photos.

Recordings.

Names.

Enough evidence to protect himself if anyone tried to eliminate him.

Then one client learned about the archive.

Gerald believed both of them were marked for death.

So he created a plan.

Margaret would die.

Gerald would collect the policy.

A staged drowning would give them enough money to disappear.

But Gerald did not disappear.

That was where the plan changed.

“Why not?” Hale asked.

Margaret looked down.

“Because two million dollars taught him the wrong lesson.”

“He decided the system worked.”

“Yes.”

“And instead of leaving it…”

“He took control of more of it.”

I felt Denise shift beside me.

“So Gerald used his wife’s false death as proof of concept.”

Margaret nodded.

“He told himself nobody had been hurt.”

“But you
