with both hands above my head.

“My name is Celia Ellis!”

An officer shouted for me to get down.

I kept speaking.

“My son was kidnapped by Nathaniel Vale!”

“Down!”

“Federal contractor Arcwell has compromised witness protection!”

More phones appeared.

Livestreams.

People backed away but kept recording.

Lillian stepped out.

Margaret too.

I lowered myself to my knees.

Then I saw Agent Hale.

Blood dried along the side of his face.

He emerged from the fourth police vehicle.

Alive.

He looked at me.

Then at the crowd.

And smiled.

Not because he was happy.

Because he understood.

Public.

Arcwell could control a sealed facility.

A private road.

An evidence chain.

A quiet arrest.

They could not easily erase two hundred phones.

Hale raised his badge.

“These people are witnesses under federal protection.”

The local officers hesitated.

Their commander looked confused.

Hale continued loudly.

“No one transports them without my authorization.”

A black SUV stopped beyond the roadblock.

Arcwell markings.

Its driver remained inside.

Hale saw it.

So did I.

The SUV reversed.

People filmed that too.

For the first time, the second branch retreated because the story was no longer theirs alone.

Then Hale came toward us.

“Elias is gone.”

Margaret’s face hardened.

“Arcwell took him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Hale looked at the cameras before lowering his voice.

“We recovered one attacker.”

“Who?”

“He says Elias made a deal with the Custodian before Lake Ormond.”

My stomach tightened.

“What deal?”

“The archive in exchange for immunity.”

“That makes no sense.”

Hale shook his head.

“It does if Elias never intended to give them the archive.”

“What did he intend?”

“To give them you.”

I stared.

“Why me?”

The captured attacker had answered that.

Because the registry was not the only thing my parents had hidden.

There was one final asset.

Not paperwork.

Not recordings.

Not money.

A person.

Hale looked at Lillian.

Then at me.

“Your mother protected one surviving Halcyon founder.”

“Who?”

“No name yet.”

“What does that have to do with me?”

Hale took a breath.

“The founder is listed in Thomas Marsh’s notes as Celia’s godparent.”

I felt the world narrow.

“My parents never told me I had a godparent.”

“They told someone.”

“Who?”

Hale answered:

“The Custodian.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: My Hidden Godparent Was the Last
