burned inside.

At 6:42 a.m., almost eighty minutes before the scheduled meeting, thermal imaging detected three people.

One in the turbine hall.

One near the control room.

One moving below ground.

At 6:51, a fourth heat signature appeared.

Hale looked at the screen.

“Entrance?”

“None recorded.”

A hidden tunnel.

Of course.

At 7:03, the plant’s external speaker activated.

An elderly male voice said:

“Harold.”

Harold was not with us.

The voice continued anyway.

“I know you’re listening through them.”

Harold would hear eventually.

Maybe Charles knew that was enough.

Then:

“Celia Marsh Ellis.”

My stomach tightened.

Nobody had announced my presence.

The voice sounded weak.

Old.

But clear.

“Your father was right about one thing.”

Hale whispered, “Do not answer.”

I remembered Harold’s warning.

Truth as a weapon.

The speaker crackled.

“Families should never be used as keys.”

I stepped toward the microphone.

Hale shook his head.

I ignored him.

“Charles Finch?”

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.”

Harold’s father was alive.

“Come outside.”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because Marion has already arrived.”

Caroline went pale.

Her mother had disappeared from supervised housing hours earlier.

“And Elias?”

Charles answered:

“Elias never intended to attend.”

I looked at Hale.

Elias was in high-security custody.

Of course.

The note had not been a meeting invitation.

It had been instructions for survivors.

“Then why are we here?”

Charles laughed softly.

“To decide whether twenty-nine years of hidden lives deserve to survive your need for truth.”

A steel door opened in the plant.

An old man stepped into view.

Thin.

Bent.

But unmistakably Charles Finch.

He carried a black wooden bird.

Then another door opened.

Marion Crest emerged.

Silver bird in her hand.

Charles looked toward me.

“Blue is missing.”

Police held it as evidence.

He smiled.

“But I suspect you know how to replace it.”

I did not.

Then Charles said the one sentence Harold had warned me might come.

“Ask yourself why Thomas gave the blue bird to Vaughn.”

My breathing stopped.

“What?”

“He did not give it to you.”

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

Charles smiled.

“Your father met Victor Ellis before he died.”

Vaughn had been a child.

Eight years old.

The same age range as the boy Lillian left behind.

My father had known him.

Charles continued:

“And Thomas chose Victor to carry the blue key.”

The man I married had not entered my life only because Halcyon arranged proximity.

My father had put something into Vaughn’s hands decades earlier.

Something that eventually came back to me.

And suddenly I understood why Vaughn had told Emmett to look beneath the rice.

He had been leaving clues long before I realized he possessed any.

Click here to continue reading: PART 27: Charles Revealed My Father Had Trusted Vaughn as a Child, and the Reason He
