not the father.

Elias was.

My stomach turned.

“You had a child with Elias?”

“I was seventeen.”

No one asked whether the relationship had been consensual.

The look on her face answered enough.

“What happened to him?”

“Elias took him.”

“When?”

“At birth.”

“Name?”

“I never got to name him.”

Reeves looked stricken.

“Jonah knew.”

“Know what?”

“That Elias had a son.”

“Did he designate him successor?”

“Possibly.”

“Why?”

“To keep correction authority away from the commercial branch.”

That sounded like Jonah.

Dangerous and clever.

“Who is he now?”

Nobody knew.

Then Denise said something.

Very quietly.

“I think I do.”

We turned.

She looked at me.

“There was one attorney who helped me access the original trust records in college.”

“Who?”

“He told me he was researching Halcyon for historical litigation.”

“What name?”

“Samuel Vale.”

Vale.

My stomach tightened.

“Real?”

“No. I later discovered the identity was fabricated.”

“What happened to him?”

“He disappeared.”

“When?”

“Twenty years ago.”

“Age?”

“Early thirties.”

It fit.

Elias’s son.

Lillian’s first child.

Jonah’s designated correction successor.

A hidden sibling older than Denise and Vaughn.

Another person with a claim to the blue branch.

“What does that have to do with us now?”

Reeves answered:

“If he is alive, he can query family correction records.”

“Why would he pull Denise’s file?”

“To prove who she is.”

“Why now?”

Nobody answered.

Then Hale received an alert.

The legal evidence escrow had been accessed a second time.

This time the query requested:

VAUGHN ELLIS — PATERNAL CONFIRMATION.

Not maternal.

Paternal.

Jonah Mercer.

Then:

EMMETT ELLIS — DESCENDANT STATUS.

My entire body tightened.

“What does descendant status mean?”

Reeves went pale.

“The Mercer line.”

“Why query my son?”

“Because Jonah’s emergency authority may pass through descendants if direct successors are unavailable.”

I stood.

“No.”

“We disabled hereditary control.”

“Controller authority, yes.”

“Then what remains?”

“Correction authority.”

“Which can do what?”

“Unseal bloodline records.”

“For what purpose?”

“Prevent identity conflicts.”

“Could it locate Emmett?”

“Not directly.”

“Could it identify his protection file?”

Reeves hesitated.

“Hale.”

“Answer.”

“Yes.”

My blood went cold.

Someone had found a legal back door through the one function we had preserved to prevent families from unknowingly destroying themselves.

They were looking at Denise.

Vaughn.

And now Emmett.

Hale contacted Judge Cole’s team.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

My breathing stopped.

Then June called my mother’s phone.

Not mine.

Evelyn answered.

“June?”

June was whispering.

“Grandma?”

My mother froze hearing the word.

“Yes.”

“There’s a man here.”

Every person in the room stood.

“What man?”

“He says he’s Dad’s brother.”

My stomach dropped.

Emmett’s voice came faintly in the background.

“Don’t tell him anything!”

June whispered:

“He knows the blue song.”

Then a male voice took the phone.

Calm.

Educated.

Older than Vaughn.

“You must be Celia’s mother.”

Evelyn’s face drained.

“Who are you?”

The man answered:

“Tell Lillian her first son finally came
