returned in strange fragments.

Later, while the children ate dinner, I found an envelope in Emmett’s backpack.

My body tensed automatically.

He saw.

“It’s okay.”

“What is it?”

“Dad sent it through the court.”

I looked at Hale.

He verified.

Authorized communication.

Unopened.

Addressed to me.

I almost refused it.

Then opened.

Vaughn’s handwriting.

Celia,

I keep wanting to explain.

I am trying not to.

Good start.

I stole from our children.

I lied to you.

I helped build evidence against you.

I agreed to plans I should have stopped the moment I understood them.

Rachel died because of choices I made, and I cannot make that smaller by describing what Gerald or Elias did to me first.

I stopped reading for a second.

Then continued.

I loved you.

That sentence does not fix anything.

I think part of my failure was believing love proved I could not be dangerous to you.

It did not.

My throat tightened.

He had finally learned the same truth my father recorded.

People can love you and still make choices that destroy you.

The letter continued.

I will not ask you to forgive me.

I will ask the court for whatever contact with Emmett and June professionals believe is safe for them, not what I want.

If the answer is none, I will live with that.

The money I returned was theirs.

Not a gift.

Not a bargain.

At the bottom:

The rice remark was cruel.

I knew exactly what the word meant.

I wanted somebody else to feel small because I felt trapped.

That is the simplest explanation and the worst one.

Vaughn.

No request.

No hidden clue.

No instruction.

No code.

Just words.

I folded the letter.

Emmett watched from across the room.

“What did he say?”

“He told the truth about some things.”

“Did he say sorry?”

“Yes.”

“Do you forgive him?”

“No.”

Emmett nodded.

“Can you later?”

“Maybe.”

“Do you have to?”

“No.”

He seemed relieved.

Good.

June held up a piece of chicken.

“Can we have apples tomorrow?”

The question hit me harder than it should have.

Apples.

The first grocery trip.

Removing the bag because eighty dollars had to cover everything.

My mother’s birthday card hoping I bought the good apples now.

“Yes.”

“Red?”

“Whatever kind you want.”

“Even the expensive ones?”

I smiled.

“We’ll compare prices.”

She groaned.

Normal.

Perfectly normal.

That evening, Hale called with one last update.

Not a threat.

A recovery.

Federal financial investigators had traced additional Vaughn company accounts.

More clean assets.

More stolen funds.

Enough to begin restitution to several victims.

Including Rachel Mercer’s estate.

Angela Pike.

Other families.

Not enough to repair lives.

Money never could.

But records would show what happened accurately.

No more fake overdoses.

No more accidental falls rewritten by paid professionals.

No more disappearance labels where murder belonged.

Hale asked:

“Do you want me to send the full report tonight?”

I looked at Emmett doing homework.

June drawing purple shoes on a piece of paper.

My mother sitting at the table, uncertain where to put her hands because she had not lived inside ordinary family evenings for years.

“No.”

Hale paused.

“Tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

I hung up.

No final archive.

No final secret.

No final explanation that would make everything clean.

Tomorrow could hold evidence.

Court.

Charges.

Reparations.

Questions.

Tonight held dinner.

I sat beside June.

She pushed the drawing toward me.

Four purple shoes.

Not two.

“Who are those for?”

“You and me.”

“That’s four feet.”

“I know.”

“Where are we going?”

She shrugged.

“Home.”

I looked around the temporary residence.

Not our apartment.

Not my childhood house.

Not Gull House.

Not anywhere I would have once called home.

But Emmett was there.

June was there.

I was there.

For the first time, that seemed enough to start.

Click here to continue reading: PART 37: The First
