secrecy.”

“Yes.”

“Was it necessary?”

Paul considered.

“At the time, I believed so.”

“And now?”

“No.”

Good.

Hale shifted the conversation.

The original issue.

Charles switching Samuel’s identity with Lillian’s real son.

“Why?”

Paul explained better than Charles had.

Elias believed Lillian’s first son carried Jonah’s influence and wanted the boy monitored.

Charles moved Paul through Mercer routes, then substituted Samuel’s records into Lillian’s maternal line.

Elias followed the false boy.

Samuel became the visible heir.

Paul disappeared.

“You were bait,” I said.

Samuel went still.

Paul looked guilty.

“Yes.”

“Did Jonah agree?”

“No.”

“Charles did it alone.”

Charles’s face changed.

“That is not true.”

Paul turned.

“You moved Samuel into my place.”

“To save you.”

“And endanger him.”

Charles said nothing.

There it was.

One child traded for another.

Again.

Samuel looked at Charles.

“Did Elias ever target me because he thought I was Lillian’s son?”

“Yes.”

“How many times?”

“I don’t know.”

“More than once.”

“Yes.”

Samuel leaned back.

“Then your protection almost killed me.”

Charles looked old.

“Yes.”

No defense.

Paul said:

“That is why I left.”

Not only Halcyon.

The logic.

Protect one by burdening another.

I looked at everyone on the screens.

Lillian.

Marion.

Evelyn.

Charles.

Samuel.

Paul.

Denise.

Caroline.

Families connected by adults deciding some me.

“Legally?”

“Everywhere.”

“What do you want?”

“All remaining family-correction records voluntarily disclosed to the people they concern, under controlled legal process.”

Hale said:

“That is enormous.”

“Yes.”

“Some people may not want to disclosure.”

“Yes.”

Not release everything.

Not hide everything.

Choice.

Give adults the right to know what concerns their own origins without turning those records into weapons.

“Can Treasury help?”

“Yes.”

“Hale?”

“Yes.”

“Lena?”

She was already taking notes.

Good.

For once, discovering a secret produced a policy that reduced future secrets instead of creating another chase.

Paul asked:

“Why are you doing this?”

I thought about Miriam.

Evelyn.

Denise.

Caroline.

Samuel.

Myself.

“Because nobody should learn who their mother is from a crisis Paul.

He stared at me.

“How many?”

“I genuinely don’t know.”

“Can we stop adding them?”

“I’m trying.”

June asked:

“Does he come to Christmas?”

I looked at Emmett.

He groaned.

“Please no.”

Normal.

Wonderful.

Two days later, Paul sent me one document.

Not hidden.

Not coded.

Properly routed through Lena.

Subject:

THOMAS MARSH PERSONAL EFFECTS.

One item had remained in Treasury evidence for twenty-nine years.

A wristwatch.

My father’s.

Recovered from a deposit box tied to his investigation.

I remembered it.

Brown leather strap.

Scratched face.

He wore it every day.

I had believed it burned in the crash.

Apparently not.

“Do you want it?” Lena asked.

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

The watch arrived a week later.

It did not run.

I took it to a repair shop.

The watchmaker opened the back.

Inside, folded behind the movement, was a piece of paper.

I almost laughed.

Of course.

Then I stopped.

No final archive.

Could be nothing.

The watchmaker handed it to me.

One sentence.

Not code.

Not names.

Not coordinates.

Thomas’s handwriting:

If Celia ever gets this, tell her the time stopped for me here, but hers does not have to.

I closed my eyes.

The watch had stopped at 11:58.

The night he died.

I did not repair it.

I replaced the strap.

Kept the hands where they were.

Not as a command.

Not as evidence.

A reminder.

His time stopped.

Mine did not.

<a
