Bell.”

Harold whispered, “R.B.”

Dad's father's ledger.

Payments to R.B.

A hidden parcel.

It fit too well.

Grant continued.

“Richard says your father transferred it voluntarily.”

Dad shook his head.

“Then why isn't it in county records?”

“He says the transfer was never recorded.”

Harold laughed without amusement.

“An unrecorded deed from decades ago.”

“He says it's valid.”

Dad looked toward the field.

“Convenient.”

The sheriff asked, “Why does he want the acre?”

Grant did not answer immediately.

Dad turned back.

“The money?”

Grant shook his head.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“He thinks Daniel buried something there.”

Dad's face changed.

“What?”

Grant whispered, “Proof.”

“Of what?”

“That Robert Bell and your father were responsible for what happened to him.”

Nobody spoke.

I felt the cold from the windows before I understood the sentence.

Dad stepped closer.

“What happened to Daniel?”

Grant looked miserable.

“I don't know.”

“You said Richard thinks they were responsible.”

“He thinks Daniel found out about the illegal dumping and tried to expose it.”

Dad's breathing changed.

“And?”

Grant looked directly at him.

“He thinks Daniel never left town.”

Silence.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Dad stood perfectly still.

I wanted Grant to stop.

He did not.

“Richard thinks your brother died here.”

Dad whispered, “No.”

“He thinks the ledger proves it.”

“No.”

“And he thinks the cassette recorded whatever happened before Daniel disappeared.”

Dad stepped backward.

His face had gone gray.

Then something sounded outside.

An engine.

Fast.

A deputy shouted.

The sheriff ran toward the front door.

A dark sedan came around the bend in the road and stopped hard at the gate.

One man got out.

Tall.

Dark coat.

Gray hair.

He lifted both hands as deputies approached.

Grant looked through the window.

“That's him.”

Dad stared.

Richard Bell stood fifty yards away.

Then Dad whispered something that made me turn.

“No.”

“What?”

Dad's eyes were fixed on Richard.

“I know that voice.”

I looked from Dad to the man outside.

“You've met him before.”

Dad shook his head slowly.

“Not him.”

Richard called something toward the deputies.

His voice carried faintly across the yard.

Dad gripped the windowsill.

“I heard his father once.”

“When?”

Dad did not look at me.

“The night Daniel disappeared.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Dad Heard Richard Speak and Remembered the Phone Call He
