was a funeral.”

Dad gave a grim laugh.

“So apparently was there supposed to be one for me.”

Nobody smiled.

Grant suddenly leaned toward the phone.

“Wait.”

The deputy stopped him from touching it.

“What?”

“The profile picture.”

“What profile picture?”

“The fake account.”

They reopened the old message.

The sender had attached a small professional photograph.

Too tiny to study clearly.

The deputy enlarged it.

The image pixelated.

But the face remained visible.

Richard stared.

His expression collapsed.

Dad looked between them.

“Who is that?”

Richard whispered, “Thomas.”

The sheriff frowned.

“You just said Thomas Vale died twenty years ago.”

“He did.”

“Are you certain?”

“I attended his funeral.”

Dad stepped closer to the screen.

The photograph might have been old.

That was possible.

But then Grant said something worse.

“That isn't the picture I saw fourteen months ago.”

Everyone looked at him.

“What?”

Grant pointed.

“He had less hair when I met him.”

Richard stared.

“You met the man in person?”

Grant nodded.

“Yes.”

“And you're sure it was him?”

“I didn't know his name then.”

Richard sat slowly.

Dad's eyes narrowed.

“What does this mean?”

Richard's voice came out hollow.

“It means either someone used Thomas's identity.”

He looked again at the enlarged photograph.

“Or my father lied to me about another dead man.”

The sheriff's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then looked toward Dad.

“What?”

The sheriff lowered the phone.

“Preliminary forensic examination of Daniel's remains found something.”

Dad went still.

“What?”

“Metal fragments.”

“From the drums?”

“No.”

The sheriff's expression hardened.

“They believe Daniel was shot.”

Dad stared.

Richard stood abruptly.

“My father said he fell.”

The sheriff looked at him.

“Then your father lied.”

Dad's face became stone.

The sheriff continued.

“And based on the apparent location of the injury, the fall didn't kill Daniel.”

Nobody moved.

Dad whispered, “The gun did.”

The sheriff nodded.

Dad looked toward the old fence.

Then back at Richard.

“If Robert Bell lied about how Daniel died, he lied to protect whoever pulled the trigger.”

Richard's face drained.

Dad said the next words slowly.

“And if Thomas Vale was alive fourteen months ago, he may be the only person left who knows who that was.”

<a
