poison.”

“For industrial waste.”

“You buried it beside families.”

“We followed the standards people paid us to follow.”

Dad almost laughed.

“You're still doing it.”

“Doing what?”

“Making ugly things sound administrative.”

Thomas did not him?”

Thomas paused.

That pause told Dad enough.

His face changed.

“Answer me.”

“He shouldn't have been.”

Dad gripped the counter.

I put a hand on his shoulder.

Thomas continued.

“The shot should have ended it.”

“But it didn't.”

“No.”

“Then what did you do?”

The sheriff shook his head slightly, warning Dad not to lose control.

Dad did not care.

“What did you do to my brother?”

Thomas sighed.

“Daniel kept making choices.”

“He was bleeding.”

“He kept he was dead.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

“Your father thought so too.”

Dad's voice broke.

“Did you bury him alive?”

Thomas answered quietly.

“Yes.”

The room seemed to lose all air.

Dad bent over the counter.

I held his arm.

Thomas kept know.”

“Robert moved money.”

“I know.”

“Margaret concealed evidence.”

Dad's voice sharpened.

“Don't say her name.”

“She protected you.”

“I said don't.”

“And Vanessa tried to steal from you.”

Vanessa flinched.

Thomas had information from today.

Dad noticed.

“How do you know that?”

Silence.

The sheriff immediately looked around the room.

Phones.

Windows.

People.

Someone might still be feeding Thomas information.

Dad asked again.

“How do you know what Vanessa did?”

Thomas ignored it.

“You have something that belongs to me.”

“The ledger.”

“Yes.”

Dad looked toward the evidence team outside.

“You aren't getting it.”

“I don't need the book.”

“What do you need?”

“The last page.”

Dad frowned.

“What last page?”

Thomas laughed softly.

“Walter always was cleverer than people thought.”

Dad looked at Harold.

Harold shook his head.

“We didn't examine every page closely.”

Thomas continued.

“Your father wrote down one thing he should never have written.”

“What?”

“The account key.”

Dad glanced at Richard.

The settlement money.

Thomas said, “Give me the final page and this ends.”

Dad stared at the phone.

“You expect me to trust you?”

“No.”

“Then why would I?”

“Because I have something you want.”

Dad's expression changed.

“What?”

Thomas waited.

The cruelty was deliberate.

Then he said, “Daniel's last letter.”

Dad went still.

“You're lying.”

“No.”

“He wrote letters from the bunker.”

“He wrote one after the shooting.”

Dad stopped breathing.

“That isn't possible.”

“Margaret gave him paper.”

I watched Dad's hand begin to shake.

“What does it say?”

“Give me the page.”

“No.”

“Then you'll never know.”

Dad's eyes closed.

Thomas understood exactly where to press.

The ledger was evidence.

The account might contain millions.

But a final letter from Daniel was personal.

Irreplaceable.

The sheriff wrote on a pad and turned it toward Dad.

KEEP HIM TALKING.

Dad nodded almost imperceptibly.

“Why keep it thirty-one years?”

“Insurance.”

“Against whom?”

“Robert.”

“Richard's father?”

“Yes.”

Richard leaned forward.

Thomas continued.

“Robert wanted to confess after that night.”

Richard's face tightened.

“He never told me.”

“He was trying to protect you.”

Dad looked at Richard.

The pattern repeated across both families.

Parents hiding truth to protect children.

Children inheriting lies instead.

Dad asked, “Why didn't Robert go to police?”

“Because I had records showing he participated in the dumping.”

“And you threatened Richard.”

Thomas laughed.

“Robert was very protective.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Dad said, “So he helped you bury Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“And later helped fake your death.”

A pause.

“Robert was useful.”

Richard's face twisted with disgust.

Thomas heard the silence.

“Is Richard there?”

Dad looked at him.

Richard shook his head.

Dad answered, “No.”

Thomas laughed.

“You were never a good liar, Edward.”

Richard stepped toward the phone.

“Thomas.”

Silence.

Then Thomas said, “Hello, Richie.”

Richard recoiled as though struck.

Nobody had called him that all day.

Perhaps nobody had in decades.

“You're alive.”

“Obviously.”

“My father told me you died.”

“Your father told everyone many things.”

“Did he know?”

“That I survived my funeral?”

“Yes.”

Thomas chuckled.

“Who do you think arranged it?”

Richard closed his eyes.

Another piece of his father collapsed.

“Why?”

“Because by then Robert understood loyalty.”

“No. He understood fear.”

Thomas's tone changed.

“Careful.”

Richard leaned closer.

“You brought me to that property when I was a child.”

“You hid in the truck.”

“You shot Daniel.”

“He was reckless.”

“You threatened me.”

“I motivated your father.”

Richard's hands clenched.

“And after all that, you used my name to contact Grant.”

Thomas said nothing.

Richard understood.

“You wanted the family to blame me if anything surfaced.”

“Now you're thinking like your father.”

Richard looked sick.

Dad took control again.

“Where is Daniel's letter?”

Thomas replied, “Safe.”

“Prove it exists.”

Paper rustled near the phone.

Then Thomas read one sentence.

“Ed always thinks silence means he's won the argument.”

Dad's face collapsed.

I knew immediately.

“That sounds like Daniel?”

Dad nodded.

Tears filled his eyes.

“He used to say that.”

Thomas stopped reading.

“The rest costs you.”

Dad's grief became anger.

“You murdered him and kept his words as currency.”

“I kept myself alive.”

“You've been alive thirty-one years.”

“And I intend to remain that way.”

The sheriff's technician signaled that they were working on tracing the call.

Thomas seemed to sense the delay.

“Midnight tomorrow.”

“For what?”

“The page.”

“Where?”

“I'll call.”

Dad looked at the sheriff.

“And if I refuse?”

Thomas paused.

Then said, “Ask Natalie what happened to her brakes last March.”

My entire body went cold.

Dad turned toward me.

“What?”

I stared at the phone.

Last March.

My car had rolled through an intersection after the brake pedal went soft.

The mechanic said a line had failed.

I had assumed corrosion.

Dad's voice became deadly quiet.

“What did you do?”

Thomas laughed softly.

“Nothing permanent.”

Dad shouted.

“You touched my daughter?”

The sheriff grabbed his arm.

Thomas remained calm.

“I needed to know whether fear still motivated this family.”

“You son of a—”

“And it does.”

The call ended.

Dad stood frozen.

Then he turned to me.

“Your brakes?”

“I didn't know.”

“When?”

“March.”

“You never told me.”

“It seemed like a mechanical failure.”

Dad grabbed his coat.

The sheriff blocked him.

“Where are you going?”

“To find him.”

“No.”

“He touched Natalie.”

“And running into the dark is exactly what he wants.”

Dad looked ready to fight him.

I stepped between them.

“Dad.”

“He could have killed you.”

“But he didn't.”

“That doesn't help.”

“I know.”

His anger trembled through him.

I held his shoulders.

“He wants you reacting.”

Dad stared at me.

“He's had thirty-one years to plan how everyone reacts.”

That reached him.

Slowly, he took off the coat.

The sheriff immediately arranged protection around the house and asked investigators to reopen anything connected to my brake failure.

I felt violated in a way I had not expected.

Thomas had been watching before I knew there was anything to watch.

Vanessa looked equally shaken.

“If he knew about Natalie…”

She stopped.

Dad turned.

“What?”

Vanessa's face went pale.

“My daughter.”

Dad understood instantly.

My niece.

“Call her.”

Vanessa did.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Her panic rose.

“She should be home.”

The sheriff dispatched a unit immediately.

Grant stood.

“I'll go.”

Vanessa turned on him.

“No.”

“She's my daughter too.”

“Then stay here and tell them anything else you've hidden.”

Grant looked stricken.

The words landed.

He sat.

Five minutes passed.

Then ten.

Vanessa paced.

Dad watched the clock.

Finally her phone rang.

She answered instantly.

Her daughter was safe.

She had been driving and had not heard the phone.

Vanessa sank into a chair, crying.

Dad stood beside her.

This time he placed one hand on her shoulder.

No forgiveness speech.

No absolution.

Just a father touching his frightened daughter.

Then Harold entered from the study carrying photocopies of the ledger pages investigators had allowed him to review.

“Edward.”

Dad looked up.

“What?”

“I found the last page.”

Everyone gathered around.

The page appeared ordinary.

Numbers.

Dates.

Initials.

Then at the bottom, in Granddad's handwriting, a sequence of letters and digits.

Thomas had called it an account key.

Harold stared at it.

“This isn't a bank account.”

Richard leaned closer.

“What is it?”

Harold pointed.

“It looks like a safe-deposit identifier.”

Dad frowned.

“Where?”

Harold read the bank abbreviation.

The institution no longer existed.

It had merged twice over the decades.

The successor bank still operated downtown.

Dad stared at the code.

“So Thomas wants whatever is in the box.”

“Probably.”

Richard said, “Then the money may never have been the real target.”

Harold nodded.

Dad looked toward him.

“What else could be there?”

Richard answered.

“The one thing Thomas has spent thirty-one years
