address.

An old lakeside pumping station owned through one of Thomas’s aliases.

He believed Thomas used it for storing records.

And weapons.

Dad looked toward the sheriff’s deputy.

They were already moving.

Then Mercer said, “There is one more thing.”

Dad turned back.

“What?”

Mercer’s face changed.

“The reason Thomas wanted you declared dead before you reached the bank wasn't only the evidence.”

“What else?”

“He believed Walter left instructions there.”

“For what?”

Mercer hesitated.

“The settlement money.”

Dad frowned.

“We still don't know where it is.”

Mercer nodded.

“Thomas does.”

“Where?”

“He can't access it.”

“Why?”

“Because Walter designed it so only one person could.”

Dad stared.

“Who?”

Mercer looked straight into the camera.

“Natalie.”

I stopped breathing.

Dad turned toward me.

“That’s impossible.”

Mercer shook his head.

“No.”

“Why her?”

Mercer looked at Dad.

“Because Walter changed the trust after she was born.”

My throat tightened.

Granddad had died when I was young.

Dad stared at Mercer.

“What did my father do?”

Mercer’s answer was quiet.

“He put the remaining settlement funds into a custodial structure tied to Natalie’s identity.”

I stood.

“I’ve never heard of it.”

“You weren't meant to until Edward found the bank records.”

Dad looked horrified.

“How much?”

Mercer did not know precisely.

But the original amount, invested for decades, could now be worth millions.

The room went still.

All of Thomas’s attention on me suddenly changed meaning.

My brakes.

The photographs.

The no-contact paperwork.

Keeping me away.

Dad understood before I did.

“He didn’t want Natalie dead.”

Mercer shook his head.

“No.”

Dad’s face hardened.

“He needed her alive.”

“Yes.”

“For access.”

Mercer nodded.

And that made Thomas more dangerous than if he had simply wanted me gone.

Dad stepped toward me.

Before he could speak, the deputy’s phone rang.

A unit had reached the lakeside pumping station.

The building was empty.

But Thomas had left something behind.

A chair.

Rope.

Medical supplies.

And photocopies of my driver’s license.

Dad’s face went white.

The deputy continued listening.

Then looked at me.

“What?”

He lowered the phone.

“They also found a printed bank authorization form.”

Dad whispered, “For Natalie?”

The deputy nodded.

My signature line was blank.

Thomas had not been preparing to kill me.

He had been preparing to make me sign.
