with Stephen.

Why?

Then Mercer said something that made Dad sit straighter.

“Anna is the reason Stephen never destroyed the original records.”

“What?”

“She kept copies.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“Does Stephen?”

“No.”

Dad frowned.

“Then why is she with him now?”

Mercer’s answer was barely audible.

“She called me yesterday.”

“What did she say?”

“That Stephen had finally decided to remove Michael from the company.”

“Why?”

Mercer took a breath.

“Because Michael started asking about the trust.”

Dad stared.

“What does Michael know?”

“Enough to be dangerous.”

Harold looked toward the red ledger.

Stephen was cleaning up.

Thomas.

Mercer.

Dad.

Me.

Maybe now his own son.

Or the man everyone believed was his son.

Dad asked, “Where is Michael?”

Mercer whispered, “Missing.”

The sheriff looked up sharply.

“Since when?”

“Yesterday morning.”

Rebecca’s face drained.

Stephen Calder had arrived locally with Anna.

Michael Calder disappeared at nearly the same time.

Dad stared toward the industrial-yard photograph.

Grant.

Stephen.

Anna.

Maybe Grant had not been summoned only to deliver Dad.

Maybe Stephen was gathering every person connected to the final unresolved pieces.

Then the sheriff’s phone rang.

Units had entered the former Halcyon distribution yard.

Grant had been found.

Alive.

Bound to a chair.

No Stephen.

No Anna.

But another man had been discovered in a locked office.

Mid-thirties.

Unconscious.

Identification in his wallet.

Michael Calder.

Rebecca sat down hard.

The sheriff continued.

Michael had been beaten.

He was breathing.

And beside him, investigators found a blood-smeared photograph.

Daniel Cole.

On the back, one sentence had been written recently:

YOUR FATHER DIED BECAUSE MY FATHER WAS AFRAID OF YOURS.

No signature.

Dad stared.

If Anna wrote it, Michael had finally been told the truth.

And Stephen may have decided his supposed son had become one more witness he could not control.
